Efficient and direct iodination of alkyl benzenes using polymer/HIO4 and I2 under mild condition

    Get PDF
An efficient and rapid method has been found for the iodination of aromatic compounds using iodine and polymer-supported periodic acid (PSPIA) as an oxidant under mild aprotic conditions. The reagent after the completion of the reaction was easily removed by filtration and was regenerated for further use. This method has some advantages such as: mild reaction conditions, straight forward procedure, inexpensive method, high yields and one-pot conversion. KEY WORDS: Iodine, Polymer-supported periodic acid, Oxidant, Iodination Bull. Get PDF
The present study was designed to evaluate the correlations of the serum leptin with trace elements in water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis). The serum concentration of leptin and its correlations with serum concentrations of copper, zinc, selenium, iron and manganese were measured in 80 clinically healthy water buffaloes. The serum concentration of leptin had no significant correlation with the measured trace elements (P>0.05). Separate evaluation of the age groups also showed no significant difference between age groups and no significant correlation between serum leptin and the measured trace elements. In male buffaloes, the serum concentration of leptin had a significant correlation with the zinc/copper ratio (r= 0.53, P=0.014). These relationships were not measured in water buffalo previously and were partially different from those of other species

The objective of this experiment was to elucidate the aspects of differential circulatory cell responses during experimental coccidiosis in goat. A total of twenty newborn kids were selected; ten of them were infected with sporulated oocysts of the most pathogenic species of Eimeria and the remainder served as control. Blood samples were taken at 0 (before inoculation), 3, 7, 14, 17, 21, 24, 28 and 35 days post infection (dpi) and some hematological and fecal related parameters were measured. According to our data, except for a significant decrease at 24 dpi, packed cell volume (PCV) and hemoglobin (Hb) concentrations evidenced no substantial changes in the infected kids compared to controls. The percentage of the circulatory neutrophils showed remarkable increases from 7 to 24 dpi. Unlike neutrophils, the level of lymphocytes represented marked decreases from 7 to 24 dpi. In addition, circulatory eosinophils evidenced no statistical changes during the infection; however monocytes revealed a significant elevation only at 17 and 24 dpi. Substantial activations of neutrophils and lymphocytes indicate that these cells have key roles in either preventing or establishing primary infections with Eimeria in goats.

Relationships Between Thyroid Hormones, Serum Trace Elements and Erythrocyte Antioxidant Enzymes in Goats

    Get PDF
Thyroid hormones might be able to regulate the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) enzymes. The role of thyroid hormones in metabolic pathways and antioxidant enzyme activities are well known in many species. Nevertheless, there is no report describing probable relationship between thyroid hormones status, erythrocyte antioxidant enzymes and serum profiles of trace elements. This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between these parameters in Iranian native goats. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of 50 clinically healthy Iranian native goats under aseptic conditions during 6 consecutive days of summer. The serum was analyzed for serum profile of thyroid hormones, trace elements, SOD and GPX activity. There were no significant differences in serum thyroid hormones, serum levels of zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), selenium (Se) and antioxidant enzymes on different days (P>0.05). There were significant correlations between triiodothyronine (T3) and GPX (P<0.05; r=0.203) and thyroxine (T4) and GPX (P<0.05; r=0.312). There was no significant correlation between other parameters

Summary To evaluate the effect of intrauterine cephapirin on treatment of endometritis 39 Holstein dairy cows that affected with postpartum endometritis were selected and randomly assigned to two experimental designs. In experiment 1, 6 out of 14 cows were 25 to 30 days after parturition were treated by intrauterine oxytetracycline. Another 8 cows were treated by intrauterine cephapirin (Metri-Care). In experiment 2, 25 cows that were 55-60 days after parturition received three types of treatment. 6 cows were received only PGF2α, 9 cows were received PGF2α and procaine penicillin G, and 10 cows were treated by intrauterine Metri-Care. Cervical mucosa was collected before and after each treatment. There was no significant difference between mean (±SD) of neutrophils before and 14 days after treatment with them. Conception rates of cows received oxytetracycline and Metri-Care were 66.66% (4/6) and 37.5% (3/8), respectively. There was significant difference between mean of neutrophils before and 14 days after treatment at all groups. Conception rate of cows received only PGF2α was 33.33 % (2/6) and in cows received penicillin and PGF2α was 55.55% (5/9) but in cows received MetriCare was 90.0% (9/10). Therefore, Metri-care may be good choice for treatment of postpartum uterine infection in cow

Minerals play an essential role in the normal vital process. Calcium, phosphorus and magnesium are the most abundant minerals. Vitamin D and parathyroid hormone play a key role in regulation of their homeostasis as well. The aim of this study was to evaluate calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, vitamin D and parathyroid hormone on 30 Caspian horses of Guilan Province (south of the Caspian Sea) in two different seasons. So that, 15 stallions and 15 mares were sampled at the age groups ≤ 3 years and > 3 years, respectively. Fasting blood samples were collected twice, in August and January 2015 from jugular vein of horses. Serum calcium, phosphorus and magnesium were measured by colorimetric methods, while 25(OH)D3 and parathyroid hormone were measured by ELISA. The calcium (11.50 vs. 14.25 mg dL-1 ), magnesium (2.13 vs. 3.72 mg dL-1 ) and vitamin D (1.66 vs. 2.48 ng mL-1 ) levels were lower in winter than in summer (P < 0.05). The Caspian horses had higher phosphorus (4.52 vs. 3.26 mg dL-1 ) in winter than in summer (P < 0.05). Effect of sex on the measured parameters was not significant. Effects of age on the calcium, magnesium, vitamin D and parathyroid hormone levels were not significant, but ≤ 3 year - old horses had higher phosphorus (4.63 vs. 3.15 mg dL-1 ) than > 3 year - old ones (P < 0.05). The vitamin D level of mares was higher (3.10 vs. 1.43 ng mL-1 ) in summer than in winter (P < 0.05). Effects of sex, season, age and their interactions on parathyroid hormone were not significant. In conclusion, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and parathyroid hormone levels in Caspian horses were within their physiological range, but vitamin D was low without any signs of deficiency. The Caspian horses had lower calcium, magnesium and vitamin D levels in winter than in summer

Cyanobacterial metabolites as a source of sunscreens and moisturizers: a comparison with current synthetic compounds

    Get PDF
The recognition of the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation on the skin has led to the commercial development of inorganic and synthetic organic UV filters that can attenuate the negative effects of sunlight exposure. In addition, chemical moisturizers are extensively used in cosmetic products to improve the ability of skin to retain water. Whilst these chemicals have clear beneficial qualities, they may also have adverse effects such as contact sensitivity, oestrogenicity and even tumorigenic effects on human skin. Furthermore, the accumulation of such chemicals in the aquatic environment could be potentially harmful. Consequently, there is interest in exploiting safer alternatives derived from biological sources, especially from photosynthetic organisms such as cyanobacteria that have developed mechanisms for coping with high UV irradiation and desiccation. In order to overcome the detrimental effects of UV radiation, these microorganisms produce UV screening compounds such as mycosporine-like amino acids and scytonemin, which are good candidates as alternatives to current synthetic UV filters. In addition, extracellular substances produced by some extremophilic species living in hyper-arid habitats have a high water retention capacity and could be used in cosmetic products as moisturizers. In this review, we present an overview of the literature describing the potential of cyanobacterial metabolites as an alternative source for sunscreens and moisturizers
