Prolonged Thrombocytopenia in a Child with Severe Neonatal Alloimmune Reaction and Noonan Syndrome
Fetomaternal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (FMAIT) caused by maternal antibodies is the leading cause of severe neonatal thrombocytopenia. A 1-month-old Caucasian girl was referred to our Hematology Clinic for persistent thrombocytopenia diagnosed after a bleeding episode. Diagnostic tests suggested FMAIT. Mild thrombocytopenia persisted for 18 months, and subsequent findings of dysmorphic facies, short stature and mild pulmonary stenosis led to the hypothesis of Noonan syndrome (NS), which was confirmed by genetic test. Other hematological abnormalities were excluded and she had no further bleeding episodes. This case illustrates the possibility of different diagnoses with the same clinical manifestations. The persistence of thrombocytopenia longer than expected associated with typical physical features led to the diagnosis of NS.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

The electrosynthesis of the composite with of the overoxidized polypyrrole with cobalt oxy-hydroxide in strongly acidic media has been described mathematically, using linear stability theory and bifurcation analysis. The steadystates stability conditions and oscillatory and monotonic instability requirements have been described too. The system´s behavior was compared with behavior of other systems with overoxidation, electropolymerization of heterocyclic compounds and electrosynthesis of the cobalt oxy-hydroxides
Disorder in quantum vacuum: Casimir-induced localization of matter waves
Disordered geometrical boundaries such as rough surfaces induce important
modifications to the mode spectrum of the electromagnetic quantum vacuum. In
analogy to Anderson localization of waves induced by a random potential, here
we show that the Casimir-Polder interaction between a cold atomic sample and a
rough surface also produces localization phenomena. These effects, that
represent a macroscopic manifestation of disorder in quantum vacuum, should be
observable with Bose-Einstein condensates expanding in proximity of rough
surfaces

Improving in vitro induction of autopolyploidy in grapevine seedless cultivars.
The efficiency of in vitro polyploidization depends on several variables associated to the plant, the antimicrotubule agent and the interactions between them. In the present work, we have used response-surface methodology to determine the best operating conditions for plant recovery in polyploidization assays for shoot apices and somatic embryos of two seedless grape cultivars, employing colchicine and oryzalin. Explant type, tubulin-interfering compound and concentration were the critical factors determining plant recovery. Linear reduction in viable plant regeneration via organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis was obtained by increasing oryzalin concentrations and treatment time, whereas the effects of colchicine were better described by a quadratic design for both explants types. The conditions promoting higher rates of plant recovery were used in chromosome doubling experiments with oryzalin and colchicine for shoot apices and somatic embryos of ?Crimson seedless? and ?BRS Clara?. The established protocols allowed the recovery of non-chimerical autotetraploid plants at rates higher than 30 % for both cultivars. Stomata size parameters statistically correlate to the ploidy level of the regenerants and were effective for preliminary polyploidy screening. Autotetraploid lines of seedless grapes were incorporated into the Vitis germplasm bank for further agronomical evaluations. To our knowledge, this is the first report of in vitro oryzalin induced polyploidization of grapevine and of the use of mathematical modeling to optimize chromosome doubling in plants
Casimir energy and geometry : beyond the Proximity Force Approximation
We review the relation between Casimir effect and geometry, emphasizing
deviations from the commonly used Proximity Force Approximation (PFA). We use
to this aim the scattering formalism which is nowadays the best tool available
for accurate and reliable theory-experiment comparisons. We first recall the
main lines of this formalism when the mirrors can be considered to obey
specular reflection. We then discuss the more general case where non planar
mirrors give rise to non-specular reflection with wavevectors and field
polarisations mixed. The general formalism has already been fruitfully used for
evaluating the effect of roughness on the Casimir force as well as the lateral
Casimir force or Casimir torque appearing between corrugated surfaces. In this
short review, we focus our attention on the case of the lateral force which
should make possible in the future an experimental demonstration of the
nontrivial (i.e. beyond PFA) interplay of geometry and Casimir effect.Comment: corrected typos, added references, QFEXT'07 special issue in J. Phys.
Redshift-Distance Survey of Early-type Galaxies. I. Sample Selection, Properties and Completeness
This is the first in a series of papers describing the recently completed
all-sky redshift-distance survey of nearby early-type galaxies (ENEAR) carried
out for peculiar velocity analysis. The sample is divided into two parts and
consists of 1607 elliptical and lenticular galaxies with cz < 7000 km/s and
with blue magnitudes brighter than m_B=14.5 (ENEARm), and of galaxies in
clusters (ENEARc). Galaxy distances based on the Dn-sigma and Fundamental Plane
(FP) relations are now available for 1359 and 1107 ENEARm galaxies,
respectively, with roughly 80% based on new data gathered by our group. The
Dn-sigma and FP template distance relations are derived by combining 569 and
431 galaxies in 28 clusters, respectively, of which about 60% are based on our
new measurements. The ENEARm redshift-distance survey extends the earlier work
of the 7S and the recent Tully-Fisher surveys sampling a comparable volume. In
subsequent papers of this series we intend to use the ENEAR sample by itself or
in combination with the SFI Tully-Fisher survey to analyze the properties of
the local peculiar velocity field and to test how sensitive the results are to
different sampling and to the distance indicators. We also anticipate that the
homogeneous database assembled will be used for a variety of other applications

Localization of gravity in brane world with arbitrary extra dimensions
We study the induced 4-dimensional linearized Einstein field equations in an
m-dimensional bulk space by means of a confining potential. It is shown that in
this approach the mass of graviton is quantized. The cosmological constant
problem is also addressed within the context of this approach. We show that the
difference between the values of the cosmological constant in particle physics
and cosmology stems from our measurements in two different scales, small and
