    Coarse-grained strain dynamics and backwards/forwards dispersion

    A Particle Tracking Velocimetry experiment has been performed in a turbulent flow at intermediate Reynolds number. We present experimentally obtained stretching rates for particle pairs in the inertial range. When compensated by a characteristic time scale for coarse-grained strain we observe constant stretching. This indicates that the process of material line stretching taking place in the viscous subrange has its counterpart in the inertial subrange. We investigate both forwards and backwards dispersion. We find a faster backwards stretching and relate it to the problem of relative dispersion and its time asymmetry.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figue

    Hawks and Doves on Small-World Networks

    We explore the Hawk-Dove game on networks with topologies ranging from regular lattices to random graphs with small-world networks in between. This is done by means of computer simulations using several update rules for the population evolutionary dynamics. We find the overall result that cooperation is sometimes inhibited and sometimes enhanced in those network structures, with respect to the mixing population case. The differences are due to different update rules and depend on the gain-to-cost ratio. We analyse and qualitatively explain this behavior by using local topological arguments.Comment: 12 pages, 8 figure

    Evolution of Cooperation and Coordination in a Dynamically Networked Society

    Situations of conflict giving rise to social dilemmas are widespread in society and game theory is one major way in which they can be investigated. Starting from the observation that individuals in society interact through networks of acquaintances, we model the co-evolution of the agents' strategies and of the social network itself using two prototypical games, the Prisoner's Dilemma and the Stag Hunt. Allowing agents to dismiss ties and establish new ones, we find that cooperation and coordination can be achieved through the self-organization of the social network, a result that is non-trivial, especially in the Prisoner's Dilemma case. The evolution and stability of cooperation implies the condensation of agents exploiting particular game strategies into strong and stable clusters which are more densely connected, even in the more difficult case of the Prisoner's Dilemma.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures. to appea

    Quality of health care surveillance systems: review and implementation in the Swiss setting.

    Quality of health care has been a subject of attention for many years in the USA and in Europe. Since the introduction of the new federal law on insurance in 1996 it has evolved to a progressively more important issue within the Swiss health care system. In this review, some theoretical concepts of quality of health care, variations, and surveillance systems are explored. Examples of quality of health care surveillance systems that have been developed successfully in the USA, in Canada, in Australia, and in Europe are discussed. They all demonstrate the interest in creating a large range of quality indicators in the surveillance system and in evaluating hospital performance using a benchmark approach. Currently, the measurement of quality with appropriate indicators is a subject of intense debate between the Swiss Hospitals Association (H+) and the Swiss Health Insurance Consortium (Santésuisse). Examples of existing surveillance systems in Switzerland are the Outcome Verein in Zurich and the quality of care program of the Canton of Valais. The FoQual association has also contributed to the debate by reviewing six indicators, which could be used nationally for a healthcare surveillance system. In this debate it is important to stress that ideal quality indicators intended for use as measures of quality in Swiss hospitals need to be both appropriate and valid. Only indicators that fulfil these conditions should be integrated in a Swiss health care surveillance system. Priority needs to be given to quality indicators and methods with the highest level of evidence and with a solid scientific basis

    The impact of demographic, anthropometric and athletic characteristics on left atrial size in athletes.

    The structural adaptations of the “athlete’s heart” include left atrial (LA) enlargement. A literature search was performed based on PubMed listings up to 2nd November 2019 using "athletes AND left atrium", "athletes AND left atrial", "sports AND left atrium", "sports AND left atrial", “exercise AND left atrium” and “exercise AND left atrial” as the search terms. Eligible studies included those reporting the influence of demographic, anthropometric and athletic characteristics on left atrial size in athletes. A total of 58 studies were included in this review article. Although LA volume has been reported to be greater in males compared to females when indexed for body surface area (BSA), there was no difference between sexes. The positive association between LA size and age in athletes may reflect the increase in body size with maturation in nonadult athletes and the training age of endurance athletic activity in adult athletes. Caucasian and black athletes have been demonstrated to exhibit similar LA enlargement. The positive association of LA size with lean body mass possibly accounts for the relationship of LA size with BSA. LA enlargement has been reported only in endurance-trained, but not in strength-trained athletes. LA size appears to increase with an increase in both the volume and intensity of endurance training. LA size correlates independently with the training age of endurance athletes.     An overview of decision support methodologies applied in the sanitation sector

    Recently-developed decision support methodologies (DSM) have been emerging in face of continuing sanitation challenges. As the success of a decision is also dependent on the applied methodology, the present work aimed at analysing: i) their objectives and area of application; ii) the way the decision processes are structured; and iii) the stakeholders’ involvement. It was found that the types of selection procedures vary, as well as the technologies under consideration. Used criteria are wide in terms of sustainability dimensions, being either predefined or defined during the decision process. Stakeholders’ involvement is clearly a priority in analysed DSM, although differing in range and in the way they are involved. In conclusion, it is believed that learning from experiences of applied DSM will help to better select and adapt them to other contexts

    System-based decision trees for the selection of sanitation technologies

    Decision trees, also called algorithms, provide a systematic and transparent representation of the decision process. Existing algorithms applied to the sanitation sector are either too simple, failing to consider the entire sanitation chain, or excessively complex, leading to counterproductive results. This work presents simplified decision trees to support the selection of sanitation technologies compatible with the local context while, at the same time, it helps to guarantee the required technical compatibility along the sanitation supply-chain, i.e., from the interface to the final destination of products

    Decreased Striatal RGS2 Expression Is Neuroprotective in Huntington's Disease (HD) and Exemplifies a Compensatory Aspect of HD-Induced Gene Regulation

    The molecular phenotype of Huntington's disease (HD) is known to comprise highly reproducible changes in gene expression involving striatal signaling genes. Here we test whether individual changes in striatal gene expression are capable of mitigating HD-related neurotoxicity.We used protein-encoding and shRNA-expressing lentiviral vectors to evaluate the effects of RGS2, RASD2, STEP and NNAT downregulation in HD. Of these four genes, only RGS2 and RASD2 modified mutant htt fragment toxicity in cultured rat primary striatal neurons. In both cases, disease modulation was in the opposite of the predicted direction: whereas decreased expression of RGS2 and RASD2 was associated with the HD condition, restoring expression enhanced degeneration of striatal cells. Conversely, silencing of RGS2 or RASD2 enhanced disease-related changes in gene expression and resulted in significant neuroprotection. These results indicate that RGS2 and RASD2 downregulation comprises a compensatory response that allows neurons to better tolerate huntingtin toxicity. Assessment of the possible mechanism of RGS2-mediated neuroprotection showed that RGS2 downregulation enhanced ERK activation. These results establish a novel link between the inhibition of RGS2 and neuroprotective modulation of ERK activity.Our findings both identify RGS2 downregulation as a novel compensatory response in HD neurons and suggest that RGS2 inhibition might be considered as an innovative target for neuroprotective drug development

    Transcriptional changes in Huntington disease identified using genome-wide expression profiling and cross-platform analysis

    Evaluation of transcriptional changes in the striatum may be an effective approach to understanding the natural history of changes in expression contributing to the pathogenesis of Huntington disease (HD). We have performed genome-wide expression profiling of the YAC128 transgenic mouse model of HD at 12 and 24 months of age using two platforms in parallel: Affymetrix and Illumina. The data from these two powerful platforms were integrated to create a combined rank list, thereby revealing the identity of additional genes that proved to be differentially expressed between YAC128 and control mice. Using this approach, we identified 13 genes to be differentially expressed between YAC128 and controls which were validated by quantitative real-time PCR in independent cohorts of animals. In addition, we analyzed additional time points relevant to disease pathology: 3, 6 and 9 months of age. Here we present data showing the evolution of changes in the expression of selected genes: Wt1, Pcdh20 and Actn2 RNA levels change as early as 3 months of age, whereas Gsg1l, Sfmbt2, Acy3, Polr2a and Ppp1r9a RNA expression levels are affected later, at 12 and 24 months of age. We also analyzed the expression of these 13 genes in human HD and control brain, thereby revealing changes in SLC45A3, PCDH20, ACTN2, DDAH1 and PPP1R9A RNA expression.
