    First-principles characterization of ferromagnetic Mn5Ge3 for spintronic applications

    In the active search for potentially promising candidates for spintronic applications, we focus on the intermetallic ferromagnetic Mn5Ge3 compound and perform accurate first-principles FLAPW calculations within density functional theory. Through a careful investigation of the bulk electronic and magnetic structure, our results for the total magnetization, atomic magnetic moments, metallic conducting character and hyperfine fields are found to be in good agreement with experiments, and are elucidated in terms of a hybridization mechanism and exchange interaction. In order to assess the potential of this compound for spin-injection purposes, we calculate Fermi velocities and degree of spin-polarization; our results predict a rather high spin-injection efficiency in the diffusive regime along the hexagonal c-axis. Magneto-optical properties, such as L_2,3 X-ray magnetic circular dichroism, are also reported and await comparison with experimental data.Comment: 10 pages with 6 figures, to appear in Phys. Rev.

    Gender, subjectivity and feminist art: the work of Tracey Emin, Sam Taylor-Wood and Gillian Wearing

    This thesis provides a missing link between the British feminist art movement from the 1970s onwards and three contemporary female artists, namely Tracey Emin, Gillian Wearing and Sam Taylor-Wood. The dissertation demonstrates the influence that feminist art has had on contemporary women's art. It shows how various elements, typically associated with feminist art from a previous generation of female artists. have been either consciously or unconsciously incorporated into the way the three artists in question approach their work. The ideas. concerns and ways of working of a previous generation of feminist artists are discussed in relation to gender politics, the idea of the traditional male "genius", the question of feminist art practice, the role of the female body, performance versus performativity and the representation of women in visual culture. The contemporary work is discussed in relation to the above issues, drawing out comparisons to feminist art practice where appropriate. The thesis also contextualises Tracey Emin, Gillian Wearing and Sam Taylor-Wood within the generation of the Young British Artists (YBAs) of the 1990s. Here it focuses on ideas such as self-promotion versus patronage, the particular sensationalist art practice of the YBAs, the problematic attitude towards cultural theory and finally, it demonstrates how women artists of that particular period tended to work. The dissertation does not aim to present a comprehensive survey of all feminist visual arts activity in Britain and North America, the geographical locations of interest for this thesis, nor is it an all encompassing art historical overview of the activities in London, during the 1990s. The thesis should be understood as a celebration of the significance of the feminist art movement and as a demonstration of the validity of many of its concerns, even today, as exemplified in the work of the three artists in question

    Transaction Support for DataWeb Applications - A Requirement\u27s Perspective

    W eb-based purely providing read-only access to information in terms of static HTML pages. Rather, more and more web-based information systems store (part of) the information within a database system (DBS) and generate HTML pages on demand. Such information systems are often called DataWeb Applications. Different users interact with the system, and often they perform changes concurrently. As an example in the area of electronic commerce, consider a web-based tourism information system, where an unpredictable number of a priori unknown tourists are allowed to book various tourism facilities at the same time. Whereas financial and security issues of such electronic commerce transactions are extensively discussed in literature, very few work exists on the database transaction aspect in terms of consistency and reliability of electronic commerce transactions and of DataWeb applications in general. The objective of this paper is to discuss the specific requirements that different architectures of DataWeb applications and the web itself pose on transaction management, and to identify promising technologies for enabling web transaction services

    Fast Non-Rigid Radiance Fields from Monocularized Data

    3D reconstruction and novel view synthesis of dynamic scenes from collectionsof single views recently gained increased attention. Existing work showsimpressive results for synthetic setups and forward-facing real-world data, butis severely limited in the training speed and angular range for generatingnovel views. This paper addresses these limitations and proposes a new methodfor full 360{\deg} novel view synthesis of non-rigidly deforming scenes. At thecore of our method are: 1) An efficient deformation module that decouples theprocessing of spatial and temporal information for acceleration at training andinference time; and 2) A static module representing the canonical scene as afast hash-encoded neural radiance field. We evaluate the proposed approach onthe established synthetic D-NeRF benchmark, that enables efficientreconstruction from a single monocular view per time-frame randomly sampledfrom a full hemisphere. We refer to this form of inputs as monocularized data.To prove its practicality for real-world scenarios, we recorded twelvechallenging sequences with human actors by sampling single frames from asynchronized multi-view rig. In both cases, our method is trained significantlyfaster than previous methods (minutes instead of days) while achieving highervisual accuracy for generated novel views.     A Knowledge Distillation Framework For Enhancing Ear-EEG Based Sleep Staging With Scalp-EEG Data

    Sleep plays a crucial role in the well-being of human lives. Traditional sleep studies using Polysomnography are associated with discomfort and often lower sleep quality caused by the acquisition setup. Previous works have focused on developing less obtrusive methods to conduct high-quality sleep studies, and ear-EEG is among popular alternatives. However, the performance of sleep staging based on ear-EEG is still inferior to scalp-EEG based sleep staging. In order to address the performance gap between scalp-EEG and ear-EEG based sleep staging, we propose a cross-modal knowledge distillation strategy, which is a domain adaptation approach. Our experiments and analysis validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach with existing architectures, where it enhances the accuracy of the ear-EEG based sleep staging by 3.46% and Cohen's kappa coefficient by a margin of 0.038.Comment: Code available at : https://github.com/Mithunjha/EarEEG_KnowledgeDistillatio

    Example-based generation of graphical modelling environments

    The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-42061-5_7Domain-Specific Languages (DSLs) present numerous benefits like powerful domain-specific primitives, an intuitive syntax for domain experts, and the possibility of advanced code generation for narrow domains. While a graphical syntax is sometimes desired for a DSL, constructing graphical modelling environments is a costly and highly technical task. This relegates domain experts to play a passive role in their development and hinders a wider adoption of graphical DSLs. Targeting a simpler DSL construction process, we propose an example based technique for the automatic generation of modelling environments for graphical DSLs. This way, starting from examples of the DSL likely provided by domain experts using drawing tools like yED, our system is able to synthesize a graphical modelling environment that mimics the syntax of the provided examples. This includes a meta-model for the abstract syntax of the DSL, and a graphical concrete syntax supporting spatial relationships like containment or attachment.
