Reflection positivity and invertible topological phases

We implement an extended version of reflection positivity (Wick-rotated unitarity) for invertible topological quantum field theories and compute the abelian group of deformation classes using stable homotopy theory. We apply these field theory considerations to lattice systems, assuming the existence and validity of low energy effective field theory approximations, and thereby produce a general formula for the group of Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases in terms of Thom's bordism spectra; the only input is the dimension and symmetry group. We provide computations for fermionic systems in physically relevant dimensions. Other topics include symmetry in quantum field theories, a relativistic 10-fold way, the homotopy theory of relativistic free fermions, and a topological spin-statistics theorem.Comment: 136 pages, 16 figures; minor changes/corrections in version 2; v3 major revision; v4 minor revision: corrected proof of Lemma 9.55, many small changes throughout; v5 version for publication in Geometry & Topolog

The RNA-binding protein LARP1 is a post-transcriptional regulator of survival and tumorigenesis in ovarian cancer

RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) are increasingly identified as post-transcriptional drivers of cancer progression. The RBP LARP1 is an mRNA stability regulator, and elevated expression of the protein in hepatocellular and lung cancers is correlated with adverse prognosis. LARP1 associates with an mRNA interactome that is enriched for oncogenic transcripts. Here we explore the role of LARP1 in epithelial ovarian cancer, a disease characterized by the rapid acquisition of resistance to chemotherapy through the induction of pro-survival signalling. We show, using ovarian cell lines and xenografts, that LARP1 is required for cancer cell survival and chemotherapy resistance. LARP1 promotes tumour formation in vivo and maintains cancer stem cell-like populations. Using transcriptomic analysis following LARP1 knockdown, cross-referenced against the LARP1 interactome, we identify BCL2 and BIK as LARP1 mRNA targets. We demonstrate that, through an interaction with the 3 untranslated regions (3 UTRs) of BCL2 and BIK, LARP1 stabilizes BCL2 but destabilizes BIK with the net effect of resisting apoptosis. Together, our data indicate that by differentially regulating the stability of a selection of mRNAs, LARP1 promotes ovarian cancer progression and chemotherapy resistance

Measurement of minority-carrier drift mobility in solar cells using a modulated electron beam

    Get PDF
A determination of diffusivity on solar cells is here reported which utilizes a one dimensional treatment of diffusion under sinusoidal excitation. An intensity-modulated beam of a scanning electron microscope was used as a source of excitation. The beam was injected into the rear of the cell, and the modulated component of the induced terminal current was recovered phase sensitively. A Faraday cup to measure the modulated component of beam current was mounted next to the sample, and connected to the same electronics. A step up transformer and preamplifier were mounted on the sample holder. Beam currents on the order of 400-pA were used in order to minimize effects of high injection. The beam voltage was 34-kV, and the cell bias was kept at 0-V

Supermassive Black Holes: Connecting the Growth to the Cosmic Star Formation Rate

In this Letter, we present a model connecting the cosmic star formation rate (CSFR) to the growth of supermassive black holes. Considering that the evolution of the massive black hole is dominated by accretion (Soltan's argument) and that the accretion process can be described by a probabilistic function directly regulated by the CSFR, we obtain the evolution of the black hole mass density. Then using the quasar luminosity function, we determine both the functional form of the radiative efficiency and the evolution of the quasar duty-cycle as functions of the redshift. We analyze four different CSFRs showing that the quasar duty-cycle, δ(z)\delta(z), peaks at z∼8.5−11z\sim 8.5-11 and so within the window associated with the reionization of the Universe. In particular, δmax∼0.09−0.22\delta_{\rm max}\sim 0.09-0.22 depending on the CSFR. The mean radiative efficiency, ηˉ(z)\bar\eta(z), peaks at z∼0.1−1.3z\sim 0.1-1.3 with ηˉmax∼0.10−0.46\bar\eta_{\rm max}\sim 0.10-0.46 depending on the specific CSFR used. Our results also show that is not necessary a supercritical Eddington accretComment: accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters (5 pages, 6 figures), Some typos fixed; MNRAS Letters 17 Aug 201

A RE-EXAMINATION OF EVENT STUDIES APPLIED TO CHALLENGED HORIZONTAL MERGERS

    Get PDF
A growing body of empirical studies have been interpreted as support for a laissez-faire policy towards mergers. These "event studies" examine the reaction of stock market prices of firms that announce an agreement to merge. The type ~f reaction reveals whether a merger is motivated by a desire for market power or purely to improve market efficiency. In this paper, a version of the capital asset pricing model (CAPM) is applied to determine if abnormal returns are earned by rivals of 22 pairs of firms whose attempted horizontal mergers were challenged by the federal antitrust agencies. At most eight, and possibly only five, of the cases were found to be motivated by efficiency in seeking merger, and at most six, and possibly only one, were motivated by market power; the rest were inconclusive. The event-study technique is highly flawed for the study of business-regulation effects. Numerous unrealistic assumptions, inappropriate data constraints, and questionable interpretations hamper .the application of this technique to policy analysis.Industrial Organization,
