“You Can’t Dispose of Mercedes Lightly”: Mercedes de Acosta, Queer Women, and Queer Female Desire in the Early Twentieth Century

    Get PDF
This thesis is based off of the life of Mercedes de Acosta (1893-1968), an out lesbian who was very active in the literary, theatrical, and screenwriting spheres at different points in her life. While many could consider her a “failed” artist, given that none of her works were financial successes, she is notable in this time period for the noted quality of her work, her many interpersonal relationships (romantic or otherwise) with others in her trade, and her artistic exploits on both sides of the Atlantic. Being out was incredibly unusual for LGBT+ identified people in this time period, and the homophobia of the period paired with the lack of financial success of her works may have contributed to the fact that she died in poverty. This thesis looks at the life and the historiography of Mercedes de Acosta in an attempt to reconstruct what a lesbian identity meant in this period for women and how her lesbian identity affected both de Acosta\u27s life and her relationships, as well as how she was remembered afterward

Based on case studies and qualitative interviews conducted with 40 stakeholders in five SMEs, or so called Anatolian tigers, in Turkey, this article has explored what collective spirituality and Turkish Islamic business ethics entail and how they shape organizational values using diverse stakeholder perspectives. The study has revealed six emergent discourses around collective spirituality and Islamic business ethics: Flying with both wings; striving to transcend egos; being devoted to each other; treating people as whole persons; upholding an ethics of compassion; and leaving a legacy for future generations. These discourses are organized around three themes of collective spirituality, respectively: Transcendence, connectedness, and virtuousness

A first record of late Middle Permian actinopterygian fish from Anatolia, Turkey

The Middle–Upper Permian of the Gomaniibrik Formation, of the Tanin Group, in south-east Anatolia, close to the Iraq border, yielded moderately preserved fish remains. Two species, Palaeoniscum freieslebeni and Pygopterus cf. nielseni, known so far only from the Upper Permian deposits of the Zechstein Basin in western Central Europe, were recognised. This late Middle Permian Anatolian record significantly widens the geographical range of these actinopterygians into the equatorial Palaeotethys Realm

Detection of the efflux pump-mediated quinolone resistance in ESBL positive Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates by Phe-Arg-Beta-naphthylamide [GSBL pozitif Escherichia coli ve Klebsiella pneumoniae İzolatlari{dotless}nda efluks pompasi{dotless} araci{dotless}li{dotless}gi{dotless} ile gelişen florokinolon direncinin fenil arginin beta naftilamit ile araşti{dotless}ri{dotless}lmasi{dotless}]

In Extended Spectrum Beta-Lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae strains, fluoroquinolone resistance is acquired mostly by target mutations in topoisomerase genes and increased expression of efflux pumps. ESBL positive 65 E. coli and 48 K. pneumoniae strains isolated in Department of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine, Ege University were investigated in this study. 58 E. coli and 21 K. pneumoniae isolates displayed reduced susceptibility (intermediately-resistant or resistant) to ciprofloxacin or nalidixic acid by disc diffussion method. Ciprofloxacin, Phenyl-arginine-beta-naphthylamide (Phe-Arg-ß-naphthylamide-PßNA) and nalidixic acid MIC values of these isolates were determined. The changes in nalidixic acid and ciprofloxacin MIC values in the presence of fixed concentration of PßNA (20 µg/mL) were investigated. Among 21 K.pneumoniae isolates, at least four fold reductions were observed in MIC values of ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid and both for four, five and two isolates respectively. Among 58 E. coli isolates, at least four fold reductions were observed in MIC values of ciprofloxacin, nalidixic acid and both for eight, four and three isolates respectively. This result was evaluated to be indicative for presence of efflux pump mediated resistance in these isolates

Collagen deposition in myocardium after inhibition of fibrinolytic activity

Proper function of the heart directly depends on the protection of the myocardial architecture. The fibrinolytic system plays an important role(s) in the protection of myocardial architecture and aiding the pumping function of the heart. We investigated the effect of fibrinolytic system inhibition by tranexamic acid (TXA) on cat myocardium and collagen, which are important constituents of the extracellular matrix. Twenty-eight cats (seven per group) were used. Isotonic saline was administered to the control group (C) and TXA (200 mg/kg) diluted isotonic saline given to experimental groups 1 and 2 (El and E2). Experimental group 3 (E3) animals received 100 mg/kg TXA intravenously daily for 7 days. Bloods were drawn from groups C, El, and E2, and fibrinolytic activity was determined by the euglobulin lysis time, fibrinogen degradation products and fibrin plate lytic area diameters. The group C and group El cats were sacrificed following the infusion. The group E2 and group E3 animals were sacrificed at 24 h and day 7, respectively. Light and electron microscopy, along with the collagen contents of the myocardium, were used to examine the myocardial tissues. Electron microscopic examination in groups El and E2 showed inter-myofibrillar edema, glycogen loss, mitochondrial swelling and disorganization of Z-bands, and a decrease of pinocytotic vesicles in capillary endothelial cells. In group E3, increases of Collagen fibrils in intercellular areas and perivascular areas were noted. Biochemical analyses revealed a highly significant collagen accumulation in the myocardium in group E3 (P < 0.01) as compared with group C. These findings suggest that accumulation of the extracellular matrix containing collagen in the myocardium by fibrinolytic system inhibition may be responsible for the abnormal myocardial architecture, leading to cardiomyopathy and altered cardiac function. The occurrence of P fimbriae in a total of 222 uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains was investigated. Out of the total, 31 (14%) were P fimbriated. Of 24 pyelonephritogenic E. coli strains, three (13%) with P fimbriae occurred in children with clinical pyelonephritis, and of 198 E. coli strains 29 (15%) occurred in children with cystitis. Prevalence of P fimbriae of E. coli strains was found to be quite similar in patients with cystitis and pyelonephritis
