New Facts About Factor-Demand Dynamics: Employment, Jobs, and Workers
We provide a unified discussion of the relations among flows of workers, changes in employment and changes in the number of jobs at the level of the firm. Using the only available set of data (a nationally representative sample of Dutch firms in 1988 and 1990) we discover that: 1) Nearly half of all hiring is by firms where employment is not growing; 2) Over half of all firing is by firms that are not contracting; 3) Most firing is by firms that are also hiring; 4) Flows of workers within firms are small compared to flows into and out of firms; and 5) Accounting for simultaneous creation and destruction of jobs within firms adds roughly 15 percent to estimates of economywide job creation and destruction. The results imply that macroeconomic fluctuations can have substantial effects beyond those indicated by net employment changes at the firm level, and that studies of dynamic factor demand must account for variations in gross flows of workers.
Job turnover and labor turnover : a taxonomy of employment dynamics
We present an organized set of stylized facts on the relations among flows of workers, changes in employment and changes in the numer of jobs at the firm level. Job turnover isusually measured by comparing stocks of employment in each firm at two points in time andadding up the absolute employment changes. This measure is a just proxy for true jobturnover because only net job changes are counted. In this paper we use information thatallows us to compare this proxy with the correct measure. We compare both of thesemeasures to a measure of labor turnover that counts movements of individuals into and outof jobs. We find that: 1) The proxy for job turnover does not differ substantially from actualjob turnover; 2) There is a big difference between job turnover and labor turnover. Mostmobility is into and out of existing jobs rather than to created or from destroyed jobs; 3) Alarge fraction of all hires are by firms where employment is declining, and a large fractionof all layoffs are by firms where employment is expanding; 4) Simultaneous hiring and firingis due to heterogeneity of the work force
Multiple conducting carriers generated in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures
We have found that there is more than one type of conducting carriers
generated in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures by comparing the sheet carrier
density and mobility from optical transmission spectroscopy with those from
dc-transport measurements. When multiple types of carriers exist, optical
characterization dominantly reflects the contribution from the high-density
carriers whereas dc-transport measurements may exaggerate the contribution of
the high-mobility carriers even though they are present at low-density. Since
the low-temperature mobilities determined by dc-transport in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3
heterostructures are much higher than those extracted by optical method, we
attribute the origin of high-mobility transport to the low-density conducting
carriers.Comment: 3 figures, supplemental materia
Two-Dimensional Confinement of 3d1 Electrons in LaTiO3/LaAlO3 Multilayers
We report spectroscopic ellipsometry measurements of the anisotropy of the
interband transitions parallel and perpendicular to the planes of
(LaTiO3)n(LaAlO3)5 multilayers with n = 1-3. These provide direct information
about the electronic structure of the two-dimensional (2D) 3d^1 state of the Ti
ions. In combination with LDA+U calculations, we suggest that 2D confinement in
the TiO2 slabs lifts the degeneracy of the t_{2g} states leaving only the
planar d_xy orbitals occupied. We outline that these multilayers can serve as a
model system for the study of the t_{2g} 2D Hubbard model.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. Let

Work-Related Well-Being Among Dutch Cardiologists - A National Survey
This is the first study to provide a holistic examination of cardiologists' well-being, investigating positive and negative dimensions, and its determinants. We conducted a national, multicenter, self-administered web-based questionnaire. We used frequencies to depict scores on three well-being indicators (professional fulfillment, work exhaustion and interpersonal disengagement) and performed three multiple regression analyses to elucidate their determinants. Cardiologists' mean scores (scale 1 to 5) were 3.85 (SD = 0.62) for professional fulfillment, 2.25 (SD = 0.97) for work exhaustion and 2.04 (SD = 0.80) for interpersonal disengagement. Workload, work-home interference and team atmosphere predicted the negative dimensions of well-being. Autonomy predicted cardiologists' professional fulfillment. Physician-patient interactions, person-job fit and individual resilience affected both dimensions. Dutch cardiologists score relatively high on professional fulfillment and average on work exhaustion and interpersonal disengagement. In order to foster cardiologists' well-being it is critical to increase energy providing work- and individual aspects
Complications in pulmonary vein isolation in the Netherlands Heart Registration differ with sex and ablation technique
Aims Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) has become a cornerstone of the invasive treatment of atrial fibrillation. Severe complications are reported in 1-3% of patients. This study aims to compare complications and follow-up outcome of PVI in patients with atrial fibrillation. Methods and results The data were extracted from the Netherlands Heart Registration. Procedural and follow-up outcomes in patients treated with conventional radiofrequency (C-RF), multielectrode phased RF (Ph-RF), or cryoballoon (CB) ablation from 2012 to 2017 were compared. Subgroup analysis was performed to identify variables associated with complications and repeat ablations. In total, 13 823 patients (69% male) were included. The reported complication incidence was 3.6%. Patients treated with C-RF developed more cardiac tamponades (C-RF 0.8% vs. Ph-RF 0.3% vs. CB 0.3%, P Conclusion The reported complication rate during PVI was low. Patients treated with C-RF ablation were more likely to develop cardiac tamponades and vascular complications. Female sex was associated with more cardiac tamponade and bleeding complications
