    A new and improved strategy combining a dispersive-solid phase extraction-based multiclass method with ultra high pressure liquid chromatography for analysis of low molecular weight polyphenols in vegetables

    This paper reports on the development and optimization of a modified Quick, Easy, Cheap Effective, Rugged and Safe (QuEChERS) based extraction technique coupled with a clean-up dispersive-solid phase extraction (dSPE) as a new, reliable and powerful strategy to enhance the extraction efficiency of free low molecular-weight polyphenols in selected species of dietary vegetables. The process involves two simple steps. First, the homogenized samples are extracted and partitioned using an organic solvent and salt solution. Then, the supernatant is further extracted and cleaned using a dSPE technique. Final clear extracts of vegetables were concentrated under vacuum to near dryness and taken up into initial mobile phase (0.1% formic acid and 20% methanol). The separation and quantification of free low molecular weight polyphenols from the vegetable extracts was achieved by ultrahigh pressure liquid chromatography (UHPLC) equipped with a phodiode array (PDA) detection system and a Trifunctional High Strength Silica capillary analytical column (HSS T3), specially designed for polar compounds. The performance of the method was assessed by studying the selectivity, linear dynamic range, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ), precision, trueness, and matrix effects. The validation parameters of the method showed satisfactory figures of merit. Good linearity (View the MathML sourceRvalues2>0.954; (+)-catechin in carrot samples) was achieved at the studied concentration range. Reproducibility was better than 3%. Consistent recoveries of polyphenols ranging from 78.4 to 99.9% were observed when all target vegetable samples were spiked at two concentration levels, with relative standard deviations (RSDs, n = 5) lower than 2.9%. The LODs and the LOQs ranged from 0.005 μg mL−1 (trans-resveratrol, carrot) to 0.62 μg mL−1 (syringic acid, garlic) and from 0.016 μg mL−1 (trans-resveratrol, carrot) to 0.87 μg mL−1 ((+)-catechin, carrot) depending on the compound. The method was applied for studying the occurrence of free low molecular weight polyphenols in eight selected dietary vegetables (broccoli, tomato, carrot, garlic, onion, red pepper, green pepper and beetroot), providing a valuable and promising tool for food quality evaluation

    The extremal and partly marginally trapped surfaces in Minkowski 4-space, which are invariant under the group of boost isometries, are classified. Moreover, it is shown that there do not exist extremal surfaces of this kind with constant Gaussian curvature. A procedure is given in order to construct a partly marginally trapped surface by gluing two marginally trapped surfaces which are invariant under the group of boost isometries. In this paper, by considering the dependency combined with the idea of graph partition, a service identification method is proposed from the business process’s perspective. The illustration example has shown its promising and it is expected that the proposed service identification method can offer researchers further insight into service granularity analysis

    Defining an age cut-off for older offenders: a systematic review of literature

    PurposeIn the literature, 65 years is commonly used as the age to designate an older person in the community. When studying older prisoners, there is much variation. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how researchers define older offenders and for what reasons.Design/methodology/approachThe authors reviewed articles on health and well-being of older offenders to assess terminology used to describe this age group, the chosen age cut-offs distinguishing younger offenders from older offenders, the arguments provided to support this choice as well as the empirical base cited in this context.FindingsThe findings show that the age cut-off of 50 years and the term "older" were most frequently used by researchers in the field. The authors find eight main arguments given to underscore the use of specific age cut-offs delineating older offenders. They outline the reasoning provided for each argument and evaluate it for its use to define older offenders.Originality/valueWith this review, it is hoped to stimulate the much-needed discussion advancing towards a uniform definition of the older offender. Such a uniform definition would make future research more comparable and ensure that there is no ambiguity when researchers state that the study population is "older offenders"

    Timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature in Minkowski 4-space

    On any timelike surface with zero mean curvature in the four-dimensional Minkowski space we introduce special geometric (canonical) parameters and prove that the Gauss curvature and the normal curvature of the surface satisfy a system of two natural partial differential equations. Conversely, any two solutions to this system determine a unique (up to a motion) timelike surface with zero mean curvature so that the given parameters are canonical. We find all timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature in the class of rotational surfaces of Moore type. These examples give rise to a one-parameter family of solutions to the system of natural partial differential equations describing timelike surfaces with zero mean curvature.Comment: 15 page

    Ideally embedded space-times

    Due to the growing interest in embeddings of space-time in higher-dimensional spaces we consider a specific type of embedding. After proving an inequality between intrinsically defined curvature invariants and the squared mean curvature, we extend the notion of ideal embeddings from Riemannian geometry to the indefinite case. Ideal embeddings are such that the embedded manifold receives the least amount of tension from the surrounding space. Then it is shown that the de Sitter spaces, a Robertson-Walker space-time and some anisotropic perfect fluid metrics can be ideally embedded in a five-dimensional pseudo-Euclidean space.Comment: layout changed and typos corrected; uses revtex

    Sustained data access and tools as key ingredients to strengthening EO capacities : examples from land application perspective + powerpoint

    Sustainably managing agriculture and forests is key for development, in particular in Africa, and for facing global challenges such as climate change or food security, but requires reliable information. As Earth Observation (EO) satellite data can contribute to these information needs, more and more institutes integrate this technology into their daily work. Facing ever-growing and evolving EO data sources (e.g. new satellites and sensors) and access technology (both online and via EUMETCast satellite broadcast), their applications require software tools to particularly facilitate (i) the exchange of data between the analysis tools, so users can take advantage of each tool’s strengths, and (ii) the processing and analysis of time series. A first example is the Land Surface Analysis Satellite Application Facility (LSA-SAF), that entered the second part of the Continuous Development and Operations Phase (CDOP-2), under the lead of the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), in 2011. VITO, joining the LSA-SAF network for the first time and building on previous experiences (e.g. http://www.metops10.vito.be), aims to contribute by producing and delivering operational, 10-daily vegetation indicators based on MetOp-AVHRR. Furthermore, a software tool is developed to aid exploitation of LSA-SAF products, provisionally called “MSG Toolbox”. A second example is the AGRICAB project, that receives funding from the European Union’s 7th Framework Programme for Research (FP7) and aims to build a comprehensive framework for strengthening capacities in the use of EO for agriculture and forestry management in Africa. This framework starts from sustained access to relevant satellite data (e.g. CBERS-3, DEIMOS) and derived products, such as those from the European Copernicus Global Land service, the 15 year time series of SPOT-VEGETATION (and its transition to PROBA-V) and Meteosat Second Generation (e.g. rainfall estimates). It combines local and EO data with tools and training into applications on crop monitoring, area statistics and yield forecasting, livestock insurance and modelling, forest and fire management, all fitted to the needs of stakeholders in the African focus countries
