    Eperythrozoonosis in 4-week-old Pigs

    Get PDF
Eperythrozoon suis is considered to be the major cause of icteroanemia in swine. Knowledge concerning the mode of transmission of eperythrozoonosis is incomplete. Because most cases of eperythrozoonosis occur during the warm months of the year, it has been assumed that dissemination of the blood parasite could be most easily accomplished by bloodsucking arthropod vectors

How much does teenage parenthood affect long term outcomes? A systematic review.

Background: The rates of teenage pregnancy in the UK are relatively high. Although early entry to parenthood can be a positive experience, most studies find large adverse effects on long term outcomes for the mother, child and father, in addition to being costly for the NHS. This is why the government launched its Teenage Pregnancy Strategy in 1999. However, there is growing evidence that teenage pregnancy might be mainly an indicator of disadvantage which is the underlying cause of the negative outcomes. Methods: A systematic literature review was undertaken of studies which used a UK dataset to quantify any long term outcomes of a teenage birth upon the mother, father or child. Studies were included if they used appropriate methods to isolate the causal effect of early parenthood. The databases searched included Medline, Cochrane, EconLit and Web of Science. Results: Six studies were identified by the review; five studies considered the mother’s socioeconomic outcomes, one study reported the child’s outcomes, and no studies met the inclusion criteria for the father’s outcomes. The studies suggested that early motherhood accounts for relatively few of the negative long term socioeconomic outcomes and it is predominantly an indicator of a disadvantaged family background. Conclusion: Limited evidence is available to understand the long term outcomes associated with teenage birth within the UK for the mother, father and child. Current econometric studies suggest that effective interventions to prevent teenage pregnancies will not eradicate the poorer long term socioeconomic outcomes often associated with early motherhood. Thus policy should focus on reducing initial disadvantage in addition to preventing teenage pregnancy. Additional econometric analyses around the mothers’, fathers’ and children’s long term socioeconomic and health-related outcomes would be valuable

A feasibility study of a microgravity enhancement system for Space Station Freedom

The current low frequency microgravity requirements for Space Station Freedom (SSF) call for a level of less than 1 micro-g over 50 percent of all the laboratory racks for continuous periods of 30 days for at least 180 days per year. While this requirement is attainable for some of the laboratory modules for the Permanently Manned Configuration (PMC), it can not be met for the Man-Tended Configuration (MTC). In addition, many experiments would prefer even lower acceleration levels. To improve the microgravity environment, the Microgravity Enhancement System (MESYS) will apply a continuous thrust to SSF, to negate the disturbing gravity gradient and drag forces. The MESYS consists of a sensor, throttle-able thrusters and a control system. Both a proof mass system and accelerometer were evaluated for use as the sensor. The net result of the MESYS will be to shift the microgravity contours from the center of mass to a chosen location. Results indicate the MESYS is not feasible for MTC since it will require 5,073 kg of hydrazine fuel and 7,660 watts of power for 30 days of operation during average atmospheric conditions. For PMC, the MESYS is much more practical since only 4,008 kg of fuel and 5,640 watts of power are required

The Abundances Of Neutron-Capture Species In The Very Metal-Poor Globular Cluster M15: A Uniform Analysis Of Red Giant Branch And Red Horizontal Branch Stars

    Get PDF
The globular cluster M15 is unique in its display of star-to-star variations in the neutron-capture elements. Comprehensive abundance surveys have been previously conducted for handfuls of M15 red giant branch (RGB) and red horizontal branch (RHB) stars. No attempt has been made to perform a single, self-consistent analysis of these stars, which exhibit a wide range in atmospheric parameters. In the current effort, a new comparative abundance derivation is presented for three RGB and six RHB members of the cluster. The analysis employs an updated version of the line transfer code MOOG, which now appropriately treats coherent, isotropic scattering. The apparent discrepancy in the previously reported values for the metallicity of M15 RGB and RHB stars is addressed and a resolute disparity of Delta(RHB-RGB) approximate to 0.1 dex in the iron abundance was found. The anti-correlative behavior of the light neutron-capture elements (Sr, Y, Zr) is clearly demonstrated with both Ba and Eu, standard markers of the s- and r-process, respectively. No conclusive detection of Pb was made in the RGB targets. Consequently for the M15 cluster, this suggests that the main component of the s-process has made a negligible contribution to those elements normally dominated by this process in solar system material. Additionally for the M15 sample, a large Eu abundance spread is confirmed, which is comparable to that of the halo field at the same metallicity. These abundance results are considered in the discussion of the chemical inhomogeneity and nucleosynthetic history of M15.National Science Foundation AST 07-07447, AST 09-08978Astronom

Photoemission evidence for crossover from Peierls-like to Mott-like transition in highly strained VO2_2

We present a spectroscopic study that reveals that the metal-insulator transition of strained VO2_2 thin films may be driven towards a purely electronic transition, which does not rely on the Peierls dimerization, by the application of mechanical strain. Comparison with a moderately strained system, which does involve the lattice, demonstrates the crossover from Peierls- to Mott-like transitions

The narrative potential of the British Birth Cohort Studies

This paper draws attention to the narrative potential of longitudinal studies such as the British Birth Cohort Studies (BBCS), and explores the possibility of creating narrative case histories and conducting narrative analysis based on information available from the studies. The BBCS have historically adopted a quantitative research design and used structured interviews and questionnaires to collect data from large samples of individuals born in specific years. However, the longitudinal nature of these studies means that they follow the same sample of individuals from birth through childhood into adult life, and this leads to the creation of data that can be understood as a quantitative auto/biography
