Shell model description of the 14C dating beta decay with Brown-Rho-scaled NN interactions
We present shell model calculations for the beta-decay of the 14C ground
state to the 14N ground state, treating the states of the A=14 multiplet as two
0p holes in an 16O core. We employ low-momentum nucleon-nucleon (NN)
interactions derived from the realistic Bonn-B potential and find that the
Gamow-Teller matrix element is too large to describe the known lifetime. By
using a modified version of this potential that incorporates the effects of
Brown-Rho scaling medium modifications, we find that the GT matrix element
vanishes for a nuclear density around 85% that of nuclear matter. We find that
the splitting between the (J,T)=(1+,0) and (J,T)=(0+,1) states in 14N is
improved using the medium-modified Bonn-B potential and that the transition
strengths from excited states of 14C to the 14N ground state are compatible

Bifurcated polarization rotation in bismuth-based piezoelectrics
ABO3 perovskite-type solid solutions display a large variety of structural and physical properties, which can be tuned by chemical composition or external parameters such as temperature, pressure, strain, electric, or magnetic fields. Some solid solutions show remarkably enhanced physical properties including colossal magnetoresistance or giant piezoelectricity. It has been recognized that structural distortions, competing on the local level, are key to understanding and tuning these remarkable properties, yet, it remains a challenge to experimentally observe such local structural details. Here, from neutron pair-distribution analysis, a temperature-dependent 3D atomic-level model of the lead-free piezoelectric perovskite Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT) is reported. The statistical analysis of this model shows how local distortions compete, how this competition develops with temperature, and, in particular, how different polar displacements of Bi3+ cations coexist as a bifurcated polarization, highlighting the interest of Bi-based materials in the search for new lead-free piezoelectrics
Nuclear Saturation with in-Medium Meson Exchange Interactions
We show that the assumption of dropping meson masses together with
conventional many-body effects, implemented in the relativistic Dirac-Brueckner
formalism, explains nuclear saturation. We use a microscopic model for
correlated exchange and include the standard many-body effects on the
in-medium pion propagation, which initially increase the attractive
nucleon-nucleon () potential with density. For the vector meson exchanges
in both the and sector, we assume Brown-Rho scaling which---in
concert with `chiral' contact interactions---reduces the attraction at

Vacuum Quantum Effects for Parallel Plates Moving by Uniform Acceleration in Static de Sitter Space
The Casimir forces on two parallel plates moving by uniform proper
acceleration in static de Sitter background due to conformally coupled massless
scalar field satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions on the plates is
investigated. Static de Sitter space is conformally related to the Rindler
space, as a result we can obtain vacuum expectation values of energy-momentum
tensor for conformally invariant field in static de Sitter space from the

Medium Modifications of Charm and Charmonium in High-Energy Heavy-Ion Collisions
The production of charmonia in heavy-ion collisions is investigated within a
kinetic theory framework simultaneously accounting for dissociation and
regeneration processes in both quark-gluon plasma (QGP) and hadron-gas phases
of the reaction. In-medium modifications of open-charm states (c-quarks,
D-mesons) and the survival of J/psi mesons in the QGP are included as inferred
from lattice QCD. Pertinent consequences on equilibrium charmonium abundances
are evaluated and found to be especially relevant to explain the measured
centrality dependence of the psi'/psi ratio at SPS. Predictions for recent
In-In experiments, as well as comparisons to current Au-Au data from RHIC, are

Barriers to reporting non-motor symptoms to health-care providers in people with Parkinson's
Background: Non-motor symptoms (NMS) are common in Parkinson's disease (PD) and cause significant distress. A high rate of non-declaration of NMS by patients to healthcare providers (HCP) means that many NMS remain untreated. Current understanding of the factors preventing disclosure of NMS to HCPs is limited. The present study aimed to i) further assess the prevalence of NMS and associated distress, ii) establish current rates of NMS reporting across a range of sources, and iii) explore overall and any symptom specific barriers to help-seeking for NMS.
Methods: 358 PD patients completed a cross-sectional survey of NMS severity, reporting and barriers to help-seeking. A series of Generalised Estimating Equations were used to determine whether barriers were symptom specific.
Results: A mean of 10.5 NMS were reported by each patient. Rates of non-reporting of NMS ranged from 15 to 72% of those experiencing distressing symptoms. The most commonly reported barriers to help-seeking were acceptance of symptoms; lack of awareness that a symptom was associated with PD, and belief that no effective treatments were available. Symptom specific barriers were found for sexual dysfunction (embarrassment), unexplained pain and urinary problems (belief about lack of treatment availability).
Conclusion: A diverse range of barriers prevent PD patients reporting NMS to HCPs and these barriers differ between NMS. The study provides the foundations for developing interventions to increase reporting by targeting individual NMS. Increasing rates of help-seeking for NMS by patients to their Parkinson's healthcare providers will increase appropriate clinical care which may improve quality of life and well-being
