Resource communication. sIMfLOR - platform for portuguese forest simulators
Abstract
In the last decades there has been an increasing number of forest models developed for the main species of the
Portuguese forest. Forest models support management decisions by predicting long term stand development under
alternative scenarios and taking into account all the components of the ecosystem. However, in most cases, there is a
gap between the models developed and their application by decision-makers.
The platform for Portuguese Forest Simulators (sIMfLOR) tries to overcome this gap integrating a wide variety of forest
models into simulators and providing a baseline tool for forest managers in Portugal. As an integrated modular platform, sIMfLOR
makes available forest simulators for the Portuguese forest with user-friendly interfaces to facilitate the introduction of the information
for the simulators. The platform displays stand and regional simulators, interfaces to generate required inputs and also
auxiliary tools. As the platform focus on end-users, it allows visualization of the simulators outputs in default graphics which
can easily be edited by users. The sIMfLOR platform can be permanently accessed at http://www.isa.utl.pt/cef/forchange/fctools
The electric vehicle integration into the power system: an application to the portuguese case
Electric vehicles (EV) offer a great potential to address the integration of renewable energy sources (RES) in the power grid, and thus reduce the dependence on oil as well as the greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions. The high share of wind energy in the Portuguese energy mix expected for 2020 can led to eventual curtailment, especially during the winter when high levels of hydro generation occur. In this paper a methodology based on a unit commitment and economic dispatch is implemented, and a hydro-thermal dispatch is performed in order to evaluate the impact of the EVs integration into the grid. Results show that the considered 10 % penetration of EVs in the Portuguese fleet would increase load in 3 % and would not integrate a significant amount of wind energy because curtailment is already reduced in the absence of EVs. According to the results, the EV is charged mostly with thermal generation and the associated emissions are much higher than if they were calculated based on the generation mix

Predicting site index from climate and soil variables for cork oak (Quercus suber L.) stands in Portugal
Site productivity, assessed through site index, was modelled using partial least
squares regression as a function of soil and climatic variables. Two alternative models were
developed: a full model, considering all available explanatory variables, and a reduced
model, considering only variables that can be obtained without digging a soil pit. The
reduced model was used for mapping the site index distribution in Portugal, on the basis of
existing digital cartography available for the whole country. The developed models indicate
the importance of water availability and soil water holding capacity for site index
value distribution. Site index was related to climate, namely evaporation and frost, and soil
characteristics such as lithology, soil texture, soil depth, thickness of the A horizon and soil
classification. The variability of the estimated values within the map (9.5–16.8 m with an
average value of 13.4 m) reflects the impact of soil characteristics on the site productivity
estimation. These variables should be taken into consideration during the establishment of
new plantations of cork oak, and management of existing plantations. Results confirm the
potential distribution of cork oak in coastal regions. They also suggest the existence of a
considerable area, located both North and South of the Tagus river, where site indices
values of medium (]13;15]) to high (]15;17]) productivity classes may be expected. The
species is then expected to be able to have good productivity along the northern coastal
areas of Portugal, where presently it is not a common species but where, according to
historical records, it occurred until the middle of the sixteenth century. The present
research focused on tree growth. Cork growth and cork quality distribution needs to be
further researched through the establishment of long term experimental sites along the distribution area of cork oak, namely in the central and northern coastal areas of the

Assessment and optimization of wind energy integration into the power systems: application to the portuguese system
The increasing integration of wind energy in power systems can be responsible for the occurrence of over-generation, especially during the off-peak periods. This paper presents a dedicated methodology to identify and quantify the occurrence of this over-generation and to evaluate some of the solutions that can be adopted to mitigate this problem. The methodology is applied to the Portuguese power system, in which the wind energy is expected to represent more than 25% of the installed capacity in a near future. The results show that the pumped-hydro units will not provide enough energy storage capacity and, therefore, wind curtailments are expected to occur in the Portuguese system. Additional energy storage devices can be implemented to offset the wind energy curtailments. However, the investment analysis performed show that they are not economically viable, due to the present high capital costs involved
Generalized biomass equations for Stone pine (Pinus pinea L.) across the Mediterranean basin
Accurate estimates of tree biomass are strongly required for forest carbon budget estimates and to understand ecosystem dynamics for a sustainable management. Existing biomass equations for Mediterranean species are scarce, stand- and site-specific and therefore are not suitable for large scale application.
In this study, biomass allometric equations were developed for stone pine (Pinus pinea L.), a Mediterranean tree species with relevant ecologic and economic interest. A dataset of 283 harvested trees was compiled with above- and belowground biomass from 16 sites in three countries (Italy, Spain, Portugal) representative of the species’ geographical Mediterranean distribution. A preliminary approach comparing the ordinary least squares method and the mixed model approach was performed in order to evaluate the most appropriate method for nested data in the absence of calibration data. To quantify the sources of error associated with applying biomass equations beyond the geographical range of the data used to develop them, a residual analysis was conducted.
The allometric analysis showed low intra-specific variability in aboveground biomass relationships, which was relatively insensitive to the stand and site conditions. Significant differences were found for the crown components (needles and branches), which may be attributed to local geographical adaptation, site conditions and stand management. The root biomass was highly correlated with diameter at breast height irrespective of the geographical origin. Biased estimates were found when using site-specific equations outside the geographical range from where they were developed.
The new biomass equations improved the accuracy of biomass estimates, particularly for the aboveground components of higher dimension trees and for the root component, being highly suitable for use in regional and national biomass forest calculations. It is, up to the present, the most complete database of harvested stone pine trees worldwide
