Winning combinations of history-dependent games
The Parrondo effect describes the seemingly paradoxical situation in which
two losing games can, when combined, become winning [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 24
(2000)]. Here we generalize this analysis to the case where both games are
history-dependent, i.e. there is an intrinsic memory in the dynamics of each
game. New results are presented for the cases of both random and periodic

Bosonization and Scale Invariance on Quantum Wires
We develop a systematic approach to bosonization and vertex algebras on
quantum wires of the form of star graphs. The related bosonic fields propagate
freely in the bulk of the graph, but interact at its vertex. Our framework
covers all possible interactions preserving unitarity. Special attention is
devoted to the scale invariant interactions, which determine the critical
properties of the system. Using the associated scattering matrices, we give a
complete classification of the critical points on a star graph with any number
of edges. Critical points where the system is not invariant under wire
permutations are discovered. By means of an appropriate vertex algebra we
perform the bosonization of fermions and solve the massless Thirring model. In
this context we derive an explicit expression for the conductance and
investigate its behavior at the critical points. A simple relation between the

Molecular features of lipoprotein CD0873 - a potential vaccine against the human pathogen Clostridioides difficile

Available on open access from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology via the DOI in this recordClostridioides difficile is the primary cause of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea and colitis, a healthcare-associated intestinal disease resulting in a significant fatality rate. Colonization of the gut is critical for C. difficile pathogenesis, and the bacterial molecules essential for efficient colonization therefore offer great potential as vaccine candidates. Here we present findings demonstrating that the C. difficile immunogenic lipoprotein CD0873 plays a critical role in pathogen success in vivo. We found that in a dixenic colonization model, a CD0873-positive strain of C. difficile significantly outcompeted a CD0873-negative strain. Immunization of mice with recombinant CD0873 prevented long-term gut colonization and was correlated with a strong secretory IgA immune response. We further present high-resolution crystal structures of CD0873, at 1.80-2.50 Ã… resolutions, offering a first view of the ligand-binding pocket of CD0873 and provide evidence that this lipoprotein adhesin is part of a tyrosine import system, an amino acid key in C. difficile infection. These findings suggest that CD0873 could serve as a effective component in a vaccine against C. difficile

Optimal strategies in collective Parrondo games
We present a modification of the so-called Parrondo's paradox where one is
allowed to choose in each turn the game that a large number of individuals
play. It turns out that, by choosing the game which gives the highest average
earnings at each step, one ends up with systematic loses, whereas a periodic or
random sequence of choices yields a steadily increase of the capital. An
explanation of this behavior is given by noting that the short-range
maximization of the returns is "killing the goose that laid the golden eggs". A
continuous model displaying similar features is analyzed using dynamic

Quantum random walks with history dependence
We introduce a multi-coin discrete quantum random walk where the amplitude
for a coin flip depends upon previous tosses. Although the corresponding
classical random walk is unbiased, a bias can be introduced into the quantum
walk by varying the history dependence. By mixing the biased random walk with
an unbiased one, the direction of the bias can be reversed leading to a new

The paper deals with some spectral properties of (mostly infinite) quantum
and combinatorial graphs. Quantum graphs have been intensively studied lately
due to their numerous applications to mesoscopic physics, nanotechnology,
optics, and other areas.
A Schnol type theorem is proven that allows one to detect that a point
belongs to the spectrum when a generalized eigenfunction with an subexponential
growth integral estimate is available. A theorem on spectral gap opening for
``decorated'' quantum graphs is established (its analog is known for the
combinatorial case). It is also shown that if a periodic combinatorial or
quantum graph has a point spectrum, it is generated by compactly supported

Breaking of general rotational symmetries by multi-dimensional classical ratchets
We demonstrate that a particle driven by a set of spatially uncorrelated,
independent colored noise forces in a bounded, multidimensional potential
exhibits rotations that are independent of the initial conditions. We calculate
the particle currents in terms of the noise statistics and the potential
asymmetries by deriving an n-dimensional Fokker-Planck equation in the small
correlation time limit. We analyze a variety of flow patterns for various
potential structures, generating various combinations of laminar and rotational

Evolutionary relationships among barley and <i>Arabidopsis</i> core circadian clock and clock-associated genes
The circadian clock regulates a multitude of plant developmental and metabolic processes. In crop species, it contributes significantly to plant performance and productivity and to the adaptation and geographical range over which crops can be grown. To understand the clock in barley and how it relates to the components in the Arabidopsis thaliana clock, we have performed a systematic analysis of core circadian clock and clock-associated genes in barley, Arabidopsis and another eight species including tomato, potato, a range of monocotyledonous species and the moss, Physcomitrella patens. We have identified orthologues and paralogues of Arabidopsis genes which are conserved in all species, monocot/dicot differences, species-specific differences and variation in gene copy number (e.g. gene duplications among the various species). We propose that the common ancestor of barley and Arabidopsis had two-thirds of the key clock components identified in Arabidopsis prior to the separation of the monocot/dicot groups. After this separation, multiple independent gene duplication events took place in both monocot and dicot ancestors.
