Evaluation of ERTS-1 imagery for land use/resource inventory information
This investigation was to develop a low cost, manual technique for enhancing ERTS-1 imagery and preparing it in suitable format for use by users with wide and varied interests related to land use and natural resources information. The goals were: to develop enhancement techniques based on concepts and practices extant in photographic sciences, to provide a means of allowing productive interpretation of the imagery by manual means, to produce a product at low cost, to provide a product that would have wide applications, and one compatible with existing information systems. Cost of preparation of the photographically enhanced, enlarged negatives and positives and the diazo materials is about 1 cent per square mile. Cost of creating and mapping a land use classification of twelve use types at a scale of 1:250,000 is only $1 per square mile. The product is understood by users, is economical, and is compatible with existing information systems
An Intuitionistic Formula Hierarchy Based on High-School Identities
We revisit the notion of intuitionistic equivalence and formal proof
representations by adopting the view of formulas as exponential polynomials.
After observing that most of the invertible proof rules of intuitionistic
(minimal) propositional sequent calculi are formula (i.e. sequent) isomorphisms
corresponding to the high-school identities, we show that one can obtain a more
compact variant of a proof system, consisting of non-invertible proof rules
only, and where the invertible proof rules have been replaced by a formula
normalisation procedure.
Moreover, for certain proof systems such as the G4ip sequent calculus of
Vorob'ev, Hudelmaier, and Dyckhoff, it is even possible to see all of the
non-invertible proof rules as strict inequalities between exponential
polynomials; a careful combinatorial treatment is given in order to establish
this fact.
Finally, we extend the exponential polynomial analogy to the first-order
quantifiers, showing that it gives rise to an intuitionistic hierarchy of
formulas, resembling the classical arithmetical hierarchy, and the first one
that classifies formulas while preserving isomorphism
Average and worst-case specifications of precipitating auroral electron environment
The precipitation electrons in the auroral environment are highly variable in their energy and intensity in both space and time. As such they are a source of potential hazard to the operation of the Space Shuttle and other large spacecraft operating in polar orbit. In order to assess these hazards both the average and extreme states of the precipitating electrons must be determined. Work aimed at such a specification is presented. First results of a global study of the average characteristics are presented. In this study the high latitude region was divided into spatial elements in magnetic local time and corrected geomagnetic latitude. The average electron spectrum was then determined in each spatial element for seven different levels of activity as measured by K sub p using an extremely large data set of auroral observations. Second a case study of an extreme auroral electron environment is presented, in which the electrons are accelerated through field aligned potential as high as 30,000 volts and in which the spacecraft is seen to charge negatively to a potential approaching .5 kilovolts
Distributional versions of Littlewood's Tauberian theorem
We provide several general versions of Littlewood's Tauberian theorem. These
versions are applicable to Laplace transforms of Schwartz distributions. We
apply these Tauberian results to deduce a number of Tauberian theorems for
power series where Ces\`{a}ro summability follows from Abel summability. We
also use our general results to give a new simple proof of the classical
Littlewood one-sided Tauberian theorem for power series.Comment: 15 page
Enhancement and evaluation of Skylab photography for potential land use inventories, part 1
The author has identified the following significant results. Three sites were evaluated for land use inventory: Finger Lakes - Tompkins County, Lower Hudson Valley - Newburgh, and Suffolk County - Long Island. Special photo enhancement processes were developed to standardize the density range and contrast among S190A negatives. Enhanced black and white enlargements were converted to color by contact printing onto diazo film. A color prediction model related the density values on each spectral band for each category of land use to the spectral properties of the various diazo dyes. The S190A multispectral system proved to be almost as effective as the S190B high resolution camera for inventorying land use. Aggregate error for Level 1 averaged about 12% while Level 2 aggregate error averaged about 25%. The S190A system proved to be much superior to LANDSAT in inventorying land use, primarily because of increased resolution
On the order of summability of the Fourier inversion formula
In this article we show that the order of the point value, in the sense of Łojasiewicz, of a tempered distribution and the order of summability of the pointwise Fourier inversion formula are closely related. Assuming that the order of the point values and certain order of growth at infinity are given for a tempered distribution, we estimate the order of summability of the Fourier inversion formula. For Fourier series, and in other cases, it is shown that if the distribution has a distributional point value of order k, then its Fourier series is e.v. Cesàro summable to the distributional point value of order k+1. Conversely, we also show that if the pointwise Fourier inversion formula is e.v. Cesàro summable of order k, then the distribution is the (k+1)-th derivative of a locally integrable function, and the distribution has a distributional point value of order k+2. We also establish connections between orders of summability and local behavior for other Fourier inversion problems
Induced pluripotent stem cell models of frontotemporal dementia
The increasing prevalence of dementia in the ageing population combined with the lack of treatments and the burden on national healthcare systems globally, make dementia a public health priority. Despite the plethora of important research findings published over the past two decades, the mechanisms underlying dementia are still poorly understood and the progress in pharmacological interventions is limited. Recent advances in cellular reprogramming and genome engineering technologies offer an unprecedented new paradigm in disease modeling. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) have enabled the study of patient-derived neurons in vitro, a significant progress in the field of dementia research. The first studies using iPSCs to model dementia have recently emerged, holding promise for elucidating disease pathogenic mechanisms and accelerating drug discovery. In this review, we summarise the major findings of iPSC-based studies in Frontotemporal Dementia (FTD) and FTD overlapping with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (FTD/ALS). We also discuss some of the main challenges in the use of iPSCs to model complex, late-onset neurodegenerative diseases such as dementias
No Evidence for Orbital Loop Currents in Charge Ordered YBaCuO from Polarized Neutron Diffraction
It has been proposed that the pseudogap state of underdoped cuprate
superconductors may be due to a transition to a phase which has circulating
currents within each unit cell. Here, we use polarized neutron diffraction to
search for the corresponding orbital moments in two samples of underdoped
YBaCuO with doping levels and 0.123. In contrast to
some other reports using polarized neutrons, but in agreement with nuclear
magnetic resonance and muon spin rotation measurements, we find no evidence for
the appearance of magnetic order below 300 K. Thus, our experiment suggests
that such order is not an intrinsic property of high-quality cuprate
superconductor single crystals. Our results provide an upper bound for a
possible orbital loop moment which depends on the pattern of currents within
the unit cell. For example, for the CC- pattern proposed by Varma,
we find that the ordered moment per current loop is less than 0.013 for
