Combinatorics and formal geometry of the master equation
We give a general treatment of the master equation in homotopy algebras and
describe the operads and formal differential geometric objects governing the
corresponding algebraic structures. We show that the notion of Maurer-Cartan
twisting is encoded in certain automorphisms of these universal objects
Unified model for vortex-string network evolution
We describe and numerically test the velocity-dependent one-scale (VOS)
string evolution model, a simple analytic approach describing a string network
with the averaged correlation length and velocity. We show that it accurately
reproduces the large-scale behaviour (in particular the scaling laws) of
numerical simulations of both Goto-Nambu and field theory string networks. We
explicitly demonstrate the relation between the high-energy physics approach
and the damped and non-relativistic limits which are relevant for condensed
matter physics. We also reproduce experimental results in this context and show
that the vortex-string density is significantly reduced by loop production, an
effect not included in the usual `coarse-grained' approach.Comment: 5 pages; v2: cosmetic changes, version to appear in PR
Studies on the effect of MegaPixel sensor resolution on displayed image quality and relevant metrics
This paper investigates camera phone image quality, namely the effect of sensor megapixel (MP) resolution on the perceived quality of images displayed at full size on high-quality desktop displays. For the purpose, we use images from simulated cameras with different sensor MP resolutions. We employ methods recommended in the IEEE 1858 Camera Phone Image Quality (CPIQ) standard, as well as other established psychophysical paradigms, to obtain subjective image quality ratings for systems with varying MP resolution from large numbers of observers. These are subsequently used to validate image quality metrics (IQMs) relating to sharpness and resolution, including those from the CPIQ standard. Further, we define acceptable levels of quality - when changing MP resolution - for mobile phone images in Subjective Quality Scale (SQS) units. Finally, we map SQS levels to categories obtained from star-rating experiments (commonly used to rate consumer experience). Our findings draw a relationship between the MP resolution of the camera sensor and the LCD device. The chosen metrics predict quality accurately, but only the metrics proposed by CPIQ return results in calibrated JNDs in quality. We close by discussing the appropriateness of star-rating experiments for the purpose of measuring subjective image quality and metric validation
Cryogenic-coolant He4-superconductor dynamic and static interactions
A composite superconducting material (NbTi-Cu) was evaluated with emphasis on post quench solid cooling interaction regimes. The quasi-steady runs confirm the existence of a thermodynamic limiting thickness for insulating coatings. Two distinctly different post quench regimes of coated composites are shown to relate to the limiting thickness. Only one regime,, from quench onset to the peak value, revealed favorable coolant states, in particular in He2. Transient recovery shows favorable recovery times from this post quench regime (not drastically different from bare conductors) for both single coated specimens and a coated conductor bundle
Angular distribution of photoluminescence as a probe of Bose Condensation of trapped excitons
Recent experiments on two-dimensional exciton systems have shown the excitons
collect in shallow in-plane traps. We find that Bose condensation in a trap
results in a dramatic change of the exciton photoluminescence (PL) angular
distribution. The long-range coherence of the condensed state gives rise to a
sharply focussed peak of radiation in the direction normal to the plane. By
comparing the PL profile with and without Bose Condensation we provide a simple
diagnostic for the existence of a Bose condensate. The PL peak has strong
temperature dependence due to the thermal order parameter phase fluctuations
across the system. The angular PL distribution can also be used for imaging
vortices in the trapped condensate. Vortex phase spatial variation leads to
destructive interference of PL radiation in certain directions, creating nodes
in the PL distribution that imprint the vortex configuration.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Incomplete quantum process tomography and principle of maximal entropy
The main goal of this paper is to extend and apply the principle of maximum
entropy (MaxEnt) to incomplete quantum process estimation tasks. We will define
a so-called process entropy function being the von Neumann entropy of the state
associated with the quantum process via Choi-Jamiolkowski isomorphism. It will
be shown that an arbitrary process estimation experiment can be reformulated in
a unified framework and MaxEnt principle can be consistently exploited. We will
argue that the suggested choice for the process entropy satisfies natural list
of properties and it reduces to the state MaxEnt principle, if applied to
preparator devices.Comment: 8 pages, comments welcome, references adde
Bi-layer splitting in overdoped high cuprates
Recent angle-resolved photoemission data for overdoped Bi2212 are explained.
Of the peak-dip-hump structure, the peak corresponds the component
of a hole condensate which appears at . The fluctuating part of this same
condensate produces the hump. The bilayer splitting is large enough to produce
a bonding hole and an electron antibonding quasiparticle Fermi surface. Smaller
bilayer splittings observed in some experiments reflect the interaction of the
peak structure with quasiparticle states near, but not at, the Fermi surface.Comment: 4 pages with 2 figures - published versio
Quantum walk approach to search on fractal structures
We study continuous-time quantum walks mimicking the quantum search based on
Grover's procedure. This allows us to consider structures, that is, databases,
with arbitrary topological arrangements of their entries. We show that the
topological structure of the database plays a crucial role by analyzing, both
analytically and numerically, the transition from the ground to the first
excited state of the Hamiltonian associated with different (fractal)
structures. Additionally, we use the probability of successfully finding a
specific target as another indicator of the importance of the topological
structure.Comment: 15 pages, 14 figure
