Diversification and Market Neutral Portfolios in S&P500

Our goal is to investigate strategies to deal with the risks associated with holding asset in the stock market. We first deal with risk of holding a specific stock, by the use of diversification. Later, we’ll attempt to deal with the market risk, which is the risk of entire market going up and down. Data used in this project comes from daily adjusted closing price of stocks listed in the S&P500 index ranging from January 3rd, 2000 to December 31st, 2015 and the data is processed using statistical software R. Sections 2 through 4 of this paper demonstrate diversification and how to lower stock specific risk. Section 2 shows a case with two stocks in a portfolio. Moreover, the ideal portion of your budget allocated to each stock in the portfolio will be discussed. Section 3 scales up the discussion to twenty benchmark stocks in a portfolio. Creating thousands of potential portfolios was more difficult to compute, but it was necessary for Section 4. This part is the evaluation of how much money the portfolios create compared to just using the overall S&P500. Section 5 discusses calculating a stock’s beta, alpha, from Sharpe’s single index model and correlation with the S&P500, then calculate the same measures for the portfolio overall. By using those measures, we’ll attempt to make our portfolio neutral to the market. That is, on average, the portfolio’s value will change independent of the market in crisis situations. This part will deal with the market risk component and mix in with our diversification from above to also deal with stock specific risk

    Self-Declarations of Trust

Examines the central role of the "declaration" in self-declarations of trust. Reviews the difference between transfers on trust and self-declarations, and compares self-declarations with gifts and constructive trusts. Discusses what constitutes a declaration, its role as a formality, as an intention to be bound, and as an act of communication, and assesses why they are recognised by the courts

Simultaneous entanglement swapping of multiple orbital angular momentum states of light

    Get PDF
Entanglement swapping generates remote quantum correlations between particles that have not interacted and is the cornerstone of long-distance quantum communication, quantum networks, and fundamental tests of quantum science. In the context of spatial modes of light, high-dimensional entanglement provides an avenue to increase the bandwidth of quantum communications and provides more stringent limits for tests of quantum foundations. Here we simultaneously swap the entanglement of multiple orbital angular momentum states of light. The system is based on a degenerate filter that cannot distinguish between different anti-symmetric states, and thus entanglement swapping occurs for several thousand pairs of spatial light modes simultaneously

Insights into antimicrobial resistance among long distance migratory East Canadian High Arctic light-bellied Brent geese (Branta bernicla hrota)

This is the final version of the article. Available from BioMed Central via the DOI in this record.BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is the most significant threat to global public health and ascertaining the role wild birds play in the epidemiology of resistance is critically important. This study investigated the prevalence of AMR Gram-negative bacteria among long-distance migratory East Canadian High Arctic (ECHA) light-bellied Brent geese found wintering on the east coast of Ireland. FINDINGS: In this study a number of bacterial species were isolated from cloacal swabs taken from ECHA light-bellied Brent geese. Nucleotide sequence analysis identified five species of Gram-negative bacteria; the dominant isolated species were Pantoea spp. (n = 5) followed by Buttiauxella agrestis (n = 2). Antimicrobial susceptibility disk diffusion results identified four of the Pantoea spp. strains, and one of the Buttiauxella agrestis strains resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid. CONCLUSION: To our knowledge this is the first record of AMR bacteria isolated from long distance migratory ECHA light-bellied Brent geese. This indicates that this species may act as reservoirs and potential disseminators of resistance genes into remote natural ecosystems across their migratory range. This population of geese frequently forage (and defecate) on public amenity areas during the winter months presenting a potential human health risk.SB is funded by a European Research Councils consolidators grant (STATEMIG: 310820)

    Entangled Bessel beams

Orbital angular momentum (OAM) entanglement is investigated in the Bessel-Gauss (BG) basis. Having a readily adjustable radial scale, BG modes provide a more favourable basis for OAM entanglement over Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes. The OAM bandwidth in terms of BG modes can be increased by selection of particular radial modes and leads to a flattening of the spectrum. The flattening of the spectrum allows for higher entanglement. We demonstrate increased entanglement in terms of BG modes by performing a Bell-type experiment and violating the appropriate Clauser Horne Shimony Holt (CHSH) inequality. In addition, we reconstruct the quantum state of BG modes entangled in high-dimensions.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure

Recent Developments in Methods to Characterise the Chemical and Biological Parameters of Grass Silage

Key points Chemical analysis of forages is expensive, time consuming, environmentally unfriendly and relates poorly to the feed value for production purposes. In vivo characterisation of animal feed is not a feasible option in terms of cost and analysis time. NIRS is a rapid, non destructive, environmentally friendly, multi-analytical technique which can estimate the nutritive value of the feed. NIRS predictive equations developed on a master instrument can be transferred to local and international sites. Future assessment of forages necessitates rapid, stable, instrumentation for ‘in field’ studies
