Satellite remote sensing facility for oceanograhic applications

The project organization, design process, and construction of a Remote Sensing Facility at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at LaJolla, California are described. The facility is capable of receiving, processing, and displaying oceanographic data received from satellites. Data are primarily imaging data representing the multispectral ocean emissions and reflectances, and are accumulated during 8 to 10 minute satellite passes over the California coast. The most important feature of the facility is the reception and processing of satellite data in real time, allowing investigators to direct ships to areas of interest for on-site verifications and experiments

k-core organization of complex networks

We analytically describe the architecture of randomly damaged uncorrelated networks as a set of successively enclosed substructures -- k-cores. The k-core is the largest subgraph where vertices have at least k interconnections. We find the structure of k-cores, their sizes, and their birth points -- the bootstrap percolation thresholds. We show that in networks with a finite mean number z_2 of the second-nearest neighbors, the emergence of a k-core is a hybrid phase transition. In contrast, if z_2 diverges, the networks contain an infinite sequence of k-cores which are ultra-robust against random damage.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

The consumption tax, horizontal redistribution, and aggregate saving

AbstractIf an income tax is converted to a consumption tax of equal progressivity and equal yield, within each income class disposable income will be shifted from “low savers” to “high savers.” The impact of this “horizontal redistribution” has been neglected in previous analyses which focused on the interest elasticity of saving. We prove that “horizontal redistribution” must raise aggregate saving if persons possess “disposable income saving functions” (with certain properties and not all identical). We calculate that, if constant saving rate functions generated actual cross-section data in the U.S. in 1963, then tax conversion would have raised aggregate household saving by approximately 11% through the “horizontal redistribution effect.

Electromagnetic compatibility of implantable neurostimulators to RFID emitters

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The objective of this study is to investigate electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) of implantable neurostimulators with the emissions from radio frequency identification (RFID) emitters.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Six active implantable neurostimulators with lead systems were tested for susceptibility to electromagnetic fields generated by 22 RFID emitters. These medical devices have been approved for marketing in the U.S. for a number of intended uses that include: epilepsy, depression, incontinence, Parkinsonian tremor and pain relief. Each RFID emitter had one of the following carrier frequencies: 125 kHz, 134 kHz, 13.56 MHz, 433 MHz, 915 MHz and 2.45 GHz</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The test results showed the output of one of the implantable neurostimulators was inhibited by 134 kHz RFID emitter at separation distances of 10 cm or less. The output of the same implantable neurostimulator was also inhibited by another 134 kHz RFID emitter at separation distances of 10 cm or less and also showed inconsistent pulsing rate at a separation distance of 15 cm. Both effects occurred during and lasted through out the duration of the exposure.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The clinical significance of the effects was assessed by a clinician at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The effects were determined to be clinically significant only if they occurred for extended period of time. There were no observed effects from the other 5 implantable neurostimulators or during exposures from other RFID emitters.</p

Professional learning for Islamic education teachers in the UAE

© 2020 Christian Education. Islamic education (IE) is currently receiving increased attention and undergoing major changes at the international level. A few studies have investigated the structured professional development programmes provided to IE teachers. However, the area of autonomous IE teacher professional learning continues to be under-researched. Based on Al-Zarnuji\u27s framework of lifelong learning, the authors interviewed IE teachers to investigate the practices, attitudes, and influencing factors regarding IE teacher professional learning in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This study shows that IE teachers are eager to engage in teacher-driven learning experiences. The directions for the IE teachers’ intended growth are mainly influenced by contemporary advancements in the field of education. The findings of this study highlight how IE teachers’ professional learning capitalises on the Islamic concept of lifelong learning and thereby opens a promising route for their effective growth to meet the high demand for skilled IE teachers in the UAE

'Dressage Is Full of Queens!' Masculinity, Sexuality and Equestrian Sport

Attitudes towards sexuality are changing and levels of cultural homophobia decreasing, yet there remain very few openly gay men within sport. As a proving ground for heteromasculinity, sport has traditionally been a hostile environment for gay men. This article is based on an ethnographic study within a sporting subworld in which gay men do appear to be accepted: equestrian sport. Drawing on inclusive masculinity theory, equestrian sport is shown to offer an unusually tolerant environment for gay men in which heterosexual men of all ages demonstrate low levels of homophobia. Inclusive masculinity theory is a useful framework for exploring the changing nature of masculinities and this study demonstrates that gay men are becoming increasingly visible and accepted within once unreceptive locales, such as sport and rural communities. However, this more tolerant attitude is purchased at the expense of a subordinated feminine Other, perpetuating the dominance of men within competitive sport. © The Author(s) 2012
