    The gravity of light

A solution of the old problem raised by Tolman, Ehrenfest, Podolsky and Wheeler, concerning the lack of attraction of two light pencils "moving parallel", is proposed, considering that the light can be source of nonlinear gravitational waves corresponding (in the would be quantum theory of gravity) to spin-1 massless particles.Comment: Style is changed in standard latex, abstract has been reduced and the order of sections has been change

Superintegrability in the Manev Problem and its Real Form Dynamics

We report here the existence of Ermanno-Bernoulli type invariants for the Manev model dynamics which may be viewed upon as remnants of Laplace-Runge-Lenz vector whose conservation is characteristic of the Kepler model. If the orbits are bounded these invariants exist only when a certain rationality condition is met and thus we have superintegrability only on a subset of initial values. We analyze real form dynamics of the Manev model and derive that it is always superintegrable. We also discuss the symmetry algebras of the Manev model and its real Hamiltonian form.Comment: 12 pages, LaTeX, In: Prof. G. Real Hamiltonian forms of Hamiltonian systems

    Get PDF
We introduce the notion of a real form of a Hamiltonian dynamical system in analogy with the notion of real forms for simple Lie algebras. This is done by restricting the complexified initial dynamical system to the fixed point set of a given involution. The resulting subspace is isomorphic (but not symplectomorphic) to the initial phase space. Thus to each real Hamiltonian system we are able to associate another nonequivalent (real) ones. A crucial role in this construction is played by the assumed analyticity and the invariance of the Hamiltonian under the involution. We show that if the initial system is Liouville integrable, then its complexification and its real forms will be integrable again and this provides a method of finding new integrable systems starting from known ones. We demonstrate our construction by finding real forms of dynamics for the Toda chain and a family of Calogero--Moser models. For these models we also show that the involution of the complexified phase space induces a Cartan-like involution of their Lax representations.Comment: 15 pages, No figures, EPJ-style (svjour.cls

Gravitational fields invariant for a 2-dimensional Lie algebra of Killing fields [ X,Y] =Y, with Y of light type, are analyzed. The conditions for them to represent gravitational waves are verified and the definition of energy and polarization is addressed; realistic generating sources are described.Comment: 18 pages, no figures. Gateway Discovery and Selection in Mobile Hotspots

Gaining IP connectivity in mobile hotspots (e.g. public transport vehicles) through on-board local area networks and mobile gateways has recently attracted strong commercial and research interests. In this paper we propose a multi-dimensional protocol to support the process of gatewaydiscovery in mobile hotspots, and to help in selecting the best path able to satisfy the user's requirements and to guarantee a target end-to-end service quality. Our proposal is based on highly popular and almost standard protocols, such as SDPng for session description and AODV for route discovery

Tin addition to improve the oxidation behaviour of Nb ss /Nb 5 Si 3 based in- situ composite

Abstract. This work focuses on the effect of tin additions (2, 5 and 8%) to the MASC alloy (Nb25Ti-8Hf-2Cr-2Al-18Si) on the microstructure and the oxidation behaviour at 815°C in air. The alloys are mainly constituted of a niobium solid solution plus the (α, β, γ) Nb 5 Si 3 silicides. For the higher Sn additions (5 and 8%), a fourth phase is evidenced: it is enriched in Sn and has a crystal structure close to Nb 3 Sn. The oxidation resistance of these alloys is clearly improved by tin additions: the oxygen inward diffusion is hindered and consequently the fragmentation of the silicides is avoided. Cracks in silicides are no longer observed for the MASC containing 8%Sn. This effect is not attributed to a better efficiency of the oxide scales but rather to the reduction of the niobium solid solution fraction with tin additions

Manufacture of silicide coatings for the protection of niobium alloys against high temperature oxidation

    Get PDF
At the moment, silicide coatings provide the best protection against high temperature oxidation for niobium alloys. These are envisaged for replacing nickel base alloys currently used in the hot section of turbo-engines. Silicides confer higher protectiveness to Nb base system when compared to the environmental resistance presented by Nb alloys coated with aluminides. One major advantage of silicides is probably the great number of possibilities for modifying their composition as well as their crystallographic structure. Thus, many elemental substitutions were performed over the past 20 years in order to optimize their performances in terms of oxidation resistance. The works performed at the University of Nancy focused currently on the M3M\u273CrSi6 phase which has Nb3Fe3CrSi6 as prototype [i]. Initially, the coatings were developed for the protection of niobium alloys, strengthened by solid solution and in which the niobium content was rather high, in the range of 95 weight %. The first stage of the works was devoted to thermodynamic studies leading to the determination of phase equilibria in the Nb-Fe-Cr-Si system. Then, the obtained results were used to determine the compositions of masteralloys and the conditions of the pack-cementation processs (temperature, gas atmosphere and time) for depositing the Nb3Fe3CrSi6 phase as superficial layer, in avoiding the growth of brittle silicides as well as silicide sensitive to pest phenomeno

On the SO(2,1) symmetry in General Relativity

The role of the SO(2,1) symmetry in General Relativity is analyzed. Cosmological solutions of Einstein field equations invariant with respect to a space-like Lie algebra G_r, with r between 3 and 6 and containing so(2,1) as a subalgebra, are also classified.Comment: 10 pages, latex, no figure

W-F substitutions in apomyoglobin increase the local flexibility of the N-terminal region causing amyloid aggregation: A H/D exchange study.

    Get PDF
Myoglobin is an α-helical globular protein containing two highly conserved tryptophanyl residues at positions 7 and 14 in the N-terminal region. The simultaneous substitution of the two residues impairs the productive folding of the protein making the polypeptide chain highly prone to aggregate forming amyloid fibrils at physiological pH and room temperature. The role played by tryptophanyl residues in driving the productive folding process was investigated by providing structural details at low resolution of compact intermediate of three mutated apomyoglobins, i.e., W7F, W14F and the amyloid forming mutant W7FW14F. In particular, we followed the hydrogen/deuterium exchange rate of protein segments using proteolysis with pepsin followed by mass spectrometry analysis. The results revealed significant differences in the N-terminal region, consisting in an alteration of the physico-chemical properties of the 7-11 segment for W7F and in an increase of local flexibility of the 12-29 segment for W14F. In the double trypthophanyl substituted mutant, these effects are additive and impair the formation of native-like contacts and favour inter-chain interactions leading to protein aggregation and amyloid formation at physiological pH

The matching between two 4-dimensional PP-waves is discussed by using Israel's matching conditions. Physical consequences on the dynamics of (cosmic) strings are analyzed. The extension to space-time of arbitrary dimension is discussed and some interesting features related to the brane world scenario, BPS states in gravity and Dirac-like quantization conditions are briefly described.Comment: 16 pages, no figures.
