Romanian Tritium for Nuclear Fusion
The demand for tritium is expected to increase when ITER (the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) begins operation in the mid-2020s. Romania is expected to detritiate its CANDU (Canada Deuterium Uranium) units at Cernavoda starting 2024, with the goal of improving radiological safety and reactor performance. Detritiation will result in a significant quantity of tritium being produced and thus Romania has an opportunity to supply tritium for fusion. In this assessment, ITER has been used as a reference device requiring tritium, as the projected tritium extraction schedule from Cernavoda aligns favourably with ITER operation. The findings suggest that Romania is capable of providing a total of 6.2 kg of tritium to ITER over its 20 year operation, generating a potential revenue of 120 M (USD) in the case of zero tritium sales. Greater involvement in future fission-fusion tritium-related activities through experience in tritium technologies is also discussed as a unique opportunity for Romania

Enhanced piezoelectricity and electromechanical efficiency in semiconducting GaN due to nanoscale porosity
Electrical polarization phenomena in GaN are important as they have significant impact on the operation of modern day energy efficient lighting and are fundamental to many GaN-based high power and high frequency electronics. Controlling polarization is beneficial for the optimization of these applications. GaN is also piezoelectric, and therefore mechanical stress and strain are possible handles to control its polarization. Nonetheless, polar semiconductors in general, and GaN in particular, are weak piezoelectric materials when compared to ceramics, and are therefore not considered for characteristic electromechanical applications such as sensing, actuation and mechanical energy harvesting. Here, we examine the effect of nanoscale porosity on the piezoelectricity of initially conductive GaN. We find that for 40% porosity, the previously conductive GaN layer becomes depleted, and exhibits enhanced piezoelectricity as measured using piezoresponse force microscopy, as well as by using a mechanical energy harvesting setup. The effective piezoelectric charge coefficient of the porous GaN, d33,eff, is found to be about 8 pm/V which is 2 3 times larger than bulk GaN. A macroscale device comprising a porous GaN layer delivered 100 nW/cm2 across a resistive load under a 150 kPa mechanical excitation. We performed finite element simulations to analyze the evolution of the piezoelectric properties with porosity. The simulations suggest that increased mechanical compliance due to porosity gives rise to the observed enhanced piezoelectricity in GaN. Furthermore, the simulations show that for stress-based excitations, the porous GaN electromechanical figure of merit is increased by an order of magnitude and becomes comparable to that of barium titanate piezoceramics. In addition, considering the central role played by GaN in modern electronics and optoelectronics, our study validates a very promising research direction when considering stress-based electromechanical applications which combine GaN’s semiconducting and piezoelectric properties
A nearly complete database on the records and ecology of the rarest boreal tiger moth from 1840s to 2020
Global environmental changes may cause dramatic insect declines but over century-long time series of certain species’ records are rarely available for scientific research. The Menetries’ Tiger Moth (Arctia menetriesii) appears to be the most enigmatic example among boreal insects. Although it occurs throughout the entire Eurasian taiga biome, it is so rare that less than 100 specimens were recorded since its original description in 1846. Here, we present the database, which contains nearly all available information on the species’ records collected from 1840s to 2020. The data on A. menetriesii records (N = 78) through geographic regions, environments, and different timeframes are compiled and unified. The database may serve as the basis for a wide array of future research such as the distribution modeling and predictions of range shifts under climate changes. It represents a unique example of a more than century-long dataset of distributional, ecological, and phenological data designed for an exceptionally rare but widespread boreal insect, which primarily occurs in hard-to-reach, uninhabited areas of Eurasia.Peer reviewe
Combinatorial experimental protocols for Erbicin-derived immunoagents and Herceptin
Erbicin is a human anti-ErbB2 single-chain antibody fragment with high affinity and selectivity for ErbB2-positive cancer cells. Two anti-ErbB2 immunoconjugates, called Erb-hRNase and Erb-hcAb, have been prepared and found to be selectively cytotoxic on ErbB2-positive cancer cells in vitro and vivo. In Erb-hRNase, Erbicin is linked to a human RNase and in Erb-hcAb it is linked to the key structural and functional regions of a human IgG. Herceptin is an anti-ErbB2 humanised antibody successfully used in the immunotherapy of breast cancer. We report here that the Erbicin-derived immunoagents target on breast cancer cells an ErbB2 epitope different than that of Herceptin. This finding led us to verify the effects of Herceptin on breast cancer cells when it was used in combination with the Erbicin-derived immunoagents. The results indicated that in combination experiments the antitumour action of Herceptin and that of the novel agents were significantly increased in an additive fashion. An inspection of the mechanism of action of Erb-hRNase or Erb-hcAb combined with Herceptin provided evidence that the antibody combinations engendered an increased downregulation of the ErbB2 receptor, and led to an enhanced apoptotic cell death
GIBA: a clustering tool for detecting protein complexes
Background: During the last years, high throughput experimental methods have been developed which generate large datasets of protein - protein interactions (PPIs). However, due to the experimental methodologies these datasets contain errors mainly in terms of false positive data sets and reducing therefore the quality of any derived information. Typically these datasets can be modeled as graphs, where vertices represent proteins and edges the pairwise PPIs, making it easy to apply automated clustering methods to detect protein complexes or other biological significant functional groupings. Methods: In this paper, a clustering tool, called GIBA (named by the first characters of its developers' nicknames), is presented. GIBA implements a two step procedure to a given dataset of protein-protein interaction data. First, a clustering algorithm is applied to the interaction data, which is then followed by a filtering step to generate the final candidate list of predicted complexes. Results: The efficiency of GIBA is demonstrated through the analysis of 6 different yeast protein interaction datasets in comparison to four other available algorithms. We compared the results of the different methods by applying five different performance measurement metrices. Moreover, the parameters of the methods that constitute the filter have been checked on how they affect the final results. Conclusion: GIBA is an effective and easy to use tool for the detection of protein complexes out of experimentally measured protein - protein interaction networks. The results show that GIBA has superior prediction accuracy than previously published methods
A questionnaire-based (UM-PDHQ) study of hallucinations in Parkinson's disease
Background: Hallucinations occur in 20-40% of PD patients and have been associated with unfavorable clinical outcomes (i.e., nursing home placement, increased mortality). Hallucinations, like other non-motor features of PD, are not well recognized in routine primary/secondary clinical practice. So far, there has been no instrument for uniform characterization of hallucinations in PD. To this end, we developed the University of Miami Parkinson's disease Hallucinations Questionnaire (UM-PDHQ) that allows comprehensive assessment of hallucinations in clinical or research settings. Methods: The UM-PDHQ is composed of 6 quantitative and 14 qualitative items. For our study PD patients of all ages and in all stages of the disease were recruited over an 18-month period. The UPDRS, MMSE, and Beck Depression and Anxiety Inventories were used for comparisons. Results and Discussion: Seventy consecutive PD patients were included in the analyses. Thirty-one (44.3%) were classified as hallucinators and 39 as non-hallucinators. No significant group differences were observed in terms of demographics, disease characteristics, stage, education, depressive/anxiety scores or cognitive functioning (MMSE) between hallucinators and non-hallucinators. Single mode hallucinations were reported in 20/31 (visual/14, auditory/4, olfactory/2) whereas multiple modalities were reported in 11/31 patients. The most common hallucinatory experience was a whole person followed by small animals, insects and reptiles. Conclusion: Using the UM-PDHQ, we were able to define the key characteristics of hallucinations in PD in our cohort. Future directions include the validation of the quantitative part of the questionnaire than will serve as a rating scale for severity of hallucinations
Study of spin-isospin responses of radioactive nuclei with the background-reduced neutron spectrometer, PANDORA
The status of a project to measure spin-isospin responses of neutron drip-line nuclei using a new low-energy neutron detector, PANDORA (Particle Analyzer Neutron Detector Of Real-time Acquisition), is reported. The performance of PANDORA was characterized by the 6He(p,n)6Li reaction in inverse kinematics at the HIMAC facility in Chiba. Observation of the strong transition to the ground state in 6Li is discussed. Preliminary results of 11Li(p,n)11Be and 14Be(p,n)14B experiments in inverse kinematics at RI Beam Factory (RIBF) of RIKEN Nishina Center are also presented including the exotic decay channel of 11Be→9Li + d. Details of the experimental setup based on PANDORA and the SAMURAI large-acceptance magnetic spectrometer, as well as the combined data-acquisition system are described. The neutron-gamma discrimination capability of PANDORA was evaluated, Figure-of-Merit (FoM) values higher than those found in the literature for similar materials were derived from experimental data
Utilization of Renewable Biomass and Waste Materials for Production of Environmentally-Friendly, Bio-based Composites
The introduction of renewable biomass into a polymer matrix is an option competing with other
possibilities, such as energy recovery and/or re-use in the carbonized state, or production of
chemicals, such as, in the case of ligno-cellulosic waste, concentrates on the production of simple
sugars, then possibly leading to the development of biopolymers. These competitive applications
have also some interest and market, however with a considerable energy, water and materials
consumption, due also to the not always high yielding. Other possibilities for renewable biomass are
therefore being used as fillers to increase mechanical performance of polymers or to allow e.g., the
absorption of toxic chemicals. This review concentrates on the use of biomass as close as possible
to the “as received” state, therefore avoiding whenever suitable any thermal treatment. More
specifically, it focuses on its introduction into the three categories of oil-based (or bio-based
replacement) of engineered polymers, into industrial biopolymers, such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA)
and self-developed biopolymers, such as thermoplastic starch (TPS)
