    A Computational and Experimental Study of Coflow Laminar Methane/Air Diffusion Flames: Effects of Fuel Dilution, Inlet Velocity, and Gravity

    The influences of fuel dilution, inlet velocity, and gravity on the shape and structure of laminar coflow CH4-air diffusion flames were investigated computationally and experimentally. A series of nitrogen-diluted flames measured in the Structure and Liftoff in Combustion Experiment (SLICE) on board the International Space Station was assessed numerically under microgravity (mu g) and normal gravity (1g) conditions with CH4 mole fraction ranging from 0.4 to 1.0 and average inlet velocity ranging from 23 to 90 cm/s. Computationally, the MC-Smooth vorticity-velocity formulation was employed to describe the reactive gaseous mixture, and soot evolution was modeled by sectional aerosol equations. The governing equations and boundary conditions were discretized on a two-dimensional computational domain by finite differences, and the resulting set of fully coupled, strongly nonlinear equations was solved simultaneously at all points using a damped, modified Newton's method. Experimentally, flame shape and soot temperature were determined by flame emission images recorded by a digital color camera. Very good agreement between computation and measurement was obtained, and the conclusions were as follows. (1) Buoyant and nonbuoyant luminous flame lengths are proportional to the mass flow rate of the fuel mixture; computed and measured nonbuoyant flames are noticeably longer than their 1g counterparts; the effect of fuel dilution on flame shape (i.e., flame length and flame radius) is negligible when the flame shape is normalized by the methane flow rate. (2) Buoyancy-induced reduction of the flame radius through radially inward convection near the flame front is demonstrated. (3) Buoyant and nonbuoyant flame structure is mainly controlled by the fuel mass flow rate, and the effects from fuel dilution and inlet velocity are secondary

    In this work, the influence of gravity, fuel dilution, and inlet velocity on the structure, stabilization, and sooting behavior of laminar coflow methane-air diffusion flames was investigated both computationally and experimentally. A series of flames measured in the Structure and Liftoff in Combustion Experiment (SLICE) was assessed numerically under microgravity and normal gravity conditions with the fuel stream CH4 mole fraction ranging from 0.4 to 1.0. Computationally, the MC-Smooth vorticity-velocity formulation of the governing equations was employed to describe the reactive gaseous mixture; the soot evolution process was considered as a classical aerosol dynamics problem and was represented by the sectional aerosol equations. Since each flame is axisymmetric, a two-dimensional computational domain was employed, where the grid on the axisymmetric domain was a nonuniform tensor product mesh. The governing equations and boundary conditions were discretized on the mesh by a nine-point finite difference stencil, with the convective terms approximated by a monotonic upwind scheme and all other derivatives approximated by centered differences. The resulting set of fully coupled, strongly nonlinear equations was solved simultaneously using a damped, modified Newton's method and a nested Bi-CGSTAB linear algebra solver. Experimentally, the flame shape, size, lift-off height, and soot temperature were determined by flame emission images recorded by a digital camera, and the soot volume fraction was quantified through an absolute light calibration using a thermocouple. For a broad spectrum of flames in microgravity and normal gravity, the computed and measured flame quantities (e.g., temperature profile, flame shape, lift-off height, and soot volume fraction) were first compared to assess the accuracy of the numerical model. After its validity was established, the influence of gravity, fuel dilution, and inlet velocity on the structure, stabilization, and sooting tendency of laminar coflow methane-air diffusion flames was explored further by examining quantities derived from the computational results

    The hydrogen–air burning rate near the lean flammability limit

    This paper investigates the inner structure of the thin reactive layer of hydrogen–air fuellean deflagrations close to the flammability limit. The analysis, which employs seven elementary reactions for the chemistry description, uses the ratio of the characteristic radical and fuel concentrations as a small asymptotic parameter, enabling an accurate analytic expression for the resulting burning rate to be derived. The analysis reveals that the steady-state assumption for chemical intermediaries, applicable on the hot side of the reactive layer, fails, however, as the crossover temperature is approached, providing a nonnegligible higher-order correction to the burning rate. The results can be useful, for instance, in future investigations of hydrogen deflagration instabilities near the lean flammability limit

    Qualitative and Quantitative Features of Music Reported to Support Peak Mystical Experiences during Psychedelic Therapy Sessions

    Psilocybin is a classic (serotonergic) hallucinogen (“psychedelic” drug) that may occasion mystical experiences (characterized by a profound feeling of oneness or unity) during acute effects. Such experiences may have therapeutic value. Research and clinical applications of psychedelics usually include music listening during acute drug effects, based on the expectation that music will provide psychological support during the acute effects of psychedelic drugs, and may even facilitate the occurrence of mystical experiences. However, the features of music chosen to support the different phases of drug effects are not well-specified. As a result, there is currently neither real guidance for the selection of music nor standardization of the music used to support clinical trials with psychedelic drugs across various research groups or therapists. A description of the features of music found to be supportive of mystical experience will allow for the standardization and optimization of the delivery of psychedelic drugs in both research trials and therapeutic contexts. To this end, we conducted an anonymous survey of individuals with extensive experience administering psilocybin or psilocybin-containing mushrooms under research or therapeutic conditions, in order to identify the features of commonly used musical selections that have been found by therapists and research staff to be supportive of mystical experiences within a psilocybin session. Ten respondents yielded 24 unique recommendations of musical stimuli supportive of peak effects with psilocybin, and 24 unique recommendations of musical stimuli supportive of the period leading up to a peak experience. Qualitative analysis (expert rating of musical and music-theoretic features of the recommended stimuli) and quantitative analysis (using signal processing and music-information retrieval methods) of 22 of these stimuli yielded a description of peak period music that was characterized by regular, predictable, formulaic phrase structure and orchestration, a feeling of continuous movement and forward motion that slowly builds over time, and lower perceptual brightness when compared to pre peak music. These results provide a description of music that may be optimally supportive of peak psychedelic experiences. This description can be used to guide the selection and composition of music for future psychedelic research and therapy sessions

    New 0-D methodology for predicting NO formation under continuously varying temperature and mixture composition conditions

    The development of new diesel combustion modes characterized by low combustion temperatures, to minimize the NOx emissions, has caused a noticeable change in the diesel spray s structure and in the NOx chemistry, gaining relevance the N2O and the prompt routes in detriment of the thermal mechanism.Therefore, to accurately predict the NOx emissions, the detailed chemistry and physics must be taken into account, with the consequence of increasing the computational cost. The authors propose in the current study a new predictive methodology associated to low computational cost, where detailed chemistry and simplified physics are considered. To diminish even more the computational cost, the chemistry was tabulated as a function of temperature and oxygen excess mass fraction (parameter which effectively couples the equivalence ratio and the EGR rate). This tool has been developed with the objective of being applicable in continuously varying temperature and mixture fraction conditions (the diffusion diesel spray context) and was validated with the Two-Stage Lagrangian model (TSL-model) and with real engine measurements. The results in both validation scenarios reflect a high degree of accuracy making it applicable, at least, to perform qualitative predictions.     Metformin treatment in diabetes and heart failure: when academic equipoise meets clinical reality

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Objective</p> <p>Metformin has had a 'black box' contraindication in diabetic patients with heart failure (HF), but many believe it to be the treatment of choice in this setting. Therefore, we attempted to conduct a pilot study to evaluate the feasibility of undertaking a large randomized controlled trial with clinical endpoints.</p> <p>Study Design</p> <p>The pilot study was a randomized double blinded placebo controlled trial. Patients with HF and type 2 diabetes were screened in hospitals and HF clinics in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada (population ~1 million). Major exclusion criteria included the current use of insulin or high dose metformin, decreased renal function, or a glycosylated hemoglobin <7%. Patients were to be randomized to 1500 mg of metformin daily or matching placebo and followed for 6 months for a variety of functional outcomes, as well as clinical events.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Fifty-eight patients were screened over a six month period and all were excluded. Because of futility with respect to enrollment, the pilot study was abandoned. The mean age of screened patients was 77 (SD 9) years and 57% were male. The main reasons for exclusion were: use of insulin therapy (n = 23; 40%), glycosylated hemoglobin <7% (n = 17; 29%) and current use of high dose metformin (n = 12; 21%). Overall, contraindicated metformin therapy was the most commonly prescribed oral antihyperglycemic agent (n = 27; 51%). On average, patients were receiving 1,706 mg (SD 488 mg) of metformin daily and 12 (44%) used only metformin.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Despite uncertainty in the scientific literature, there does not appear to be clinical uncertainty with regards to the safety or effectiveness of metformin in HF making a definitive randomized trial virtually impossible.</p> <p>Trial registration</p> <p>ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT00325910</p
