    Impairment of Vowel Articulation as a Possible Marker of Disease Progression in Parkinson's Disease

    Purpose: The aim of the current study was to survey if vowel articulation in speakers with Parkinson’s disease (PD) shows specific changes in the course of the disease. Method: 67 patients with PD (42 male) and 40 healthy speakers (20 male) were tested and retested after an average time interval of 34 months. Participants had to read a given text as source for subsequent calculation of the triangular vowel space area (tVSA) and vowel articulation index (VAI). Measurement of tVSA and VAI were based upon analysis of the first and second formant of the vowels /a/, /i/and /u / extracted from defined words within the text. Results: At first visit, VAI values were reduced in male and female PD patients as compared to the control group, and showed a further decrease at the second visit. Only in female Parkinsonian speakers, VAI was correlated to overall speech impairment based upon perceptual impression. VAI and tVSA were correlated to gait impairment, but no correlations were seen between VAI and global motor impairment or overall disease duration. tVSA showed a similar reduction in the PD as compared to the control group and was also found to further decline between first and second examination in female, but not in male speakers with PD. Conclusions: Measurement of VAI seems to be superior to tVSA in the description of impaired vowel articulation and its further decline in the course of the disease in PD.     Retaining Expression on De-identified Faces

    © Springer International Publishing AG 2017The extensive use of video surveillance along with advances in face recognition has ignited concerns about the privacy of the people identifiable in the recorded documents. A face de-identification algorithm, named k-Same, has been proposed by prior research and guarantees to thwart face recognition software. However, like many previous attempts in face de-identification, kSame fails to preserve the utility such as gender and expression of the original data. To overcome this, a new algorithm is proposed here to preserve data utility as well as protect privacy. In terms of utility preservation, this new algorithm is capable of preserving not only the category of the facial expression (e.g., happy or sad) but also the intensity of the expression. This new algorithm for face de-identification possesses a great potential especially with real-world images and videos as each facial expression in real life is a continuous motion consisting of images of the same expression with various degrees of intensity.Peer reviewe

    Automatic detection of Parkinson’s disease: an experimental analysis of common speech production tasks used for diagnosis

    Parkinson’s disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder of mid-to-late life after Alzheimer’s disease. During the progression of the disease, most individuals with PD report impairments in speech due to deficits in phonation, articulation, prosody, and fluency. In the literature, several studies perform the automatic classification of speech of people with PD considering various types of acoustic information extracted from different speech tasks. Nevertheless, it is unclear which tasks are more important for an automatic classification of the disease. In this work, we compare the discriminant capabilities of eight verbal tasks designed to capture the major symptoms affecting speech. To this end, we introduce a new database of Portuguese speakers consisting of 65 healthy control and 75 PD subjects. For each task, an automatic classifier is built using feature sets and modeling approaches in compliance with the current state of the art.
