Transmission through a n interacting quantum dot in the Coulomb blockade regime
The influence of electron-electron (e-e) interactions on the transmission
through a quantum dot is investigated numerically for the Coulomb blockade
regime. For vanishing magnetic fields, the conductance peak height statistics
is found to be independent of the interactions strength. It is identical to the
statistics predicted by constant interaction single electron random matrix
theory and agrees well with recent experiments. However, in contrast to these
random matrix theories, our calculations reproduces the reduced sensitivity to
magnetic flux observed in many experiments. The relevant physics is traced to
the short range Coulomb correlations providing thus a unified explanation for
the transmission statistics as well as for the large conductance peak spacing
fluctuations observed in other experiments.Comment: Final version as publishe
Effects of a saponin fraction extracted from Trigonella foenum-graecum L. and two commercially available saponins on sex ratio and gonad histology of Nile tilapa fry, Oreochromis niloticus (L.)
Over three million tonnes (t) of tilapia, mostly Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, L.), are produced annually making it the second most abundantly produced freshwater fish (FAO, 2010). Tilapia are mouthbreeders that often produce stunted populations under pond conditions; one means of prevention is to produce all-male fish with the additional advantage that males usually grow faster than females. All-male populations can be achieved by supplementing feed with androgens such as 17-α-Methyltestosterone (MT) during days 10–25 post-hatch (Pandian and Sheela, 1995). However, MT is considered to be carcinogenic (Velazquez and Alter, 2004), and Hulak et al. (2008) also showed that effluents of systems in which carp were fed diets containing MT caused masculinization of female fish. Furthermore, in aquaculture the application of hormones to fish destined for human consumption is prohibited in the European Union under directive 96/22/EC, article 5, which also prohibits import of animal products produced with hormones.
Kwon et al. (2000) showed that Fadrozole, a non-steroidal compound, caused masculinization in tilapia by inhibiting aromatase, which is the enzyme responsible for the conversion of endogenous androgens to estrogens. Steinbronn et al. (2004) were able to show that a dose of 2000 ppm Quillaja saponins (Sigma S-2149) inhibited reproduction of tilapia after dietary application for 32 days to first-feeding fry, suggesting saponins as a possible alternative to MT. These secondary plant compounds consist of either a steroid or triterpenoid basic structure (aglycone or sapogenin) plus one or more sugar side chains (Francis et al., 2002a).
In a previous experiment a saponin fraction from the soapbark tree (Quillaja saponaria M.) inhibited aromatase in vitro (Golan et al., 2008). The fenugreek plant (Trigonella foenum-graecum L), widely cultivated in the Middle East and Asia, also has a high saponin content. The experiment was therefore conducted to test whether saponin fractions from Q. saponaria and from T. foenum-graecum were able to influence the sex ratio and gonad histology of Nile tilapia
Spatial distribution of unidentified infrared bands and extended red emission in the compact galactic HII region Sh 152
We present visible and near IR images of the compact HII region Sh 152. Some
of these images reveal the presence of Extended Red Emission (ERE) around 698
nm and emission from Unidentified Infra Red Bands (UIRBs) at 3.3 and 6.2
micron. Other images show the near infrared (7-12 micron) continuous emission
of the nebula. The ERE emission is found to coincide with the ionized region
and significantly differ from the UIRBs location. Also some evidence is found

Searching for additional heating - [OII] emission in the diffuse ionized gas of NGC891, NGC4631 and NGC3079
We present spectroscopic data of ionized gas in the disk--halo regions of
three edge-on galaxies, NGC 891, NGC 4631 and NGC 3079, covering a wavelength
range from [\ion{O}{2}] 3727\AA to [\ion{S}{2}] 6716.4\AA.
The inclusion of the [\ion{O}{2}] emission provides new constraints on the
properties of the diffuse ionized gas (DIG), in particular, the origin of the
observed spatial variations in the line intensity ratios. We used three
different methods to derive electron temperatures, abundances and ionization
fractions along the slit. The increase in the [\ion{O}{2}]/H line ratio
towards the halo in all three galaxies requires an increase either in electron
temperature or in oxygen abundance. Keeping the oxygen abundance constant
yields the most reasonable results for temperature, abundances, and ionization
fractions. Since a constant oxygen abundance seems to require an increase in
temperature towards the halo, we conclude that gradients in the electron
temperature play a significant role in the observed variations in the optical
line ratios from extraplanar DIG in these three spiral galaxies.Comment: 43 pages, 29 figure
Parallel twin-body trawl for shrimps, its design and efficiency
Comparative studies with a new 17 m parallel twin-body trawl and a 17 m bulged belly trawl conducted off Cochin during 1974-77 are reported. The parallel twin body trawl showed an increase of 28% in catch over that of bulged belly with a break up of 39.9% and 23.1 % for prawns and fishes respectively. The increase in catch is attributed to the extra wide mouth opening (26.6 %) of the parallel twin-body trawl. Parallel twin-body trawl had 8.96% lesser resistance which resulted in lower utilization of horse power
Spatial distribution of local density of states in vicinity of impurity on semiconductor surface
We present the results of detailed theoretical investigations of changes in
local density of total electronic surface states in 2D anisotropic atomic
semiconductor lattice in vicinity of impurity atom for a wide range of applied
bias voltage. We have found that taking into account changes in density of
continuous spectrum states leads to the formation of a downfall at the
particular value of applied voltage when we are interested in the density of
states above the impurity atom or even to a series of downfalls for the fixed
value of the distance from the impurity. The behaviour of local density of
states with increasing of the distance from impurity along the chain differs
from behaviour in the direction perpendicular to the chain.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figure
