    Ballistic Impact on Glass/Epoxy Composite Laminates

    Glass/epoxy composite laminates are subjected to impact loading and the energy absorbing capacity of the laminates is studied. In the present study, laminates with four different orientations and thickness values are considered. Analytical study is carried out based on energy method and results are compared with FE results obtained from Abaqus/Explicit software. Results obtained from the analytical methods are showing good agreement with the FE results. It is found that cross-ply laminates are most efficient in ballistic resistance when compared with the laminates of other orientations.     COMPARATIVE PHYTOCHEMICAL EVALUATION OF ETHNOBOTANICALLY IMPORTANT MEDICINAL PARASITIC HERB: ALECTRA CHITRAKUTENSIS

    Objective: Alectra chitrakutensis (M. A. Rau) R. Prasad & R. D. Dixit is a critically endangered and ethnobotanically very important plant. Official drug i.e. dried rhizome of the plant has been reported to be used for treatment of leprosy, tuberculosis, paralysis, oedematous swelling, fevers, intestinal worms and constipation. Besides having high medicinal properties, detail studies on chemical constituents present in the rhizome of this particular species have not been done so far. Thus, in present study efforts were made for evaluation of phytochemical as well as physicochemical analysis of the rhizome collected from six different places of the Chitrakoot region of Madhya Pradesh (M. P.) and Uttar Pradesh (U. P.).Methods: Phytochemical analysis of the rhizome was carried out as per standard protocol given in Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (API). Separation and qualitative phytochemical screening were done by using an advance technique of High-performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC).Results: The study revealed the presence of alkaloids, steroids, triterpenoids, flavonoids, glycosides, carbohydrates, starch, saponin, tannins, etc. in the rhizome of the plants, and the study confirmed the chemotaxonomic resemblance among all the collected plant materials.Conclusion: Comparative study of six rhizome samples of A. Chitrakutensis provides authenticity for establishing Pharmacopoeial standardization of drug and evidence of the study proves the chemotaxonomic similarities of official drug.Keywords: Alectra chitrakutensis, Endangered plant, Quality control, Physicochemical, Phytochemical analysis, HPTL

    An overview of advances in biomass gasification

    Biomass gasification is a widely used thermochemical process for obtaining products with more value and potential applications than the raw material itself. Cutting-edge, innovative and economical gasification techniques with high efficiencies are a prerequisite for the development of this technology. This paper delivers an assessment on the fundamentals such as feedstock types, the impact of different operating parameters, tar formation and cracking, and modelling approaches for biomass gasification. Furthermore, the authors comparatively discuss various conventional mechanisms for gasification as well as recent advances in biomass gasification. Unique gasifiers along with multi-generation strategies are discussed as a means to promote this technology into alternative applications, which require higher flexibility and greater efficiency. A strategy to improve the feasibility and sustainability of biomass gasification is via technological advancement and the minimization of socio-environmental effects.     A review of plants used in ethnoveterinary medicine in Central India

    The Central Indian region consists mainly with Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh states of India and occupied the core zone of the country. The various tribal communities comprise about 24% population of Central India. The scrutiny of literature on ethnoveterinary medicines of Central India indicates that there are about 270 plant species under 218 genera and 84 families are used by tribal and rural communities of Central India for the treatment of 139 types of different ailments, diseases and disorders of their pet/domestic animals. This indigenous knowledge and practice of tribal and rural people is based primarily on locally available medicinal plants found in their surroundings. Therefore, all these medicinal plants should be scientifically screened in order to find out newer sources of ethnoveterinary drugs of herbal origin

    Progress in biofuel production from gasification

    Biofuels from biomass gasification are reviewed here, and demonstrated to be an attractive option. Recent progress in gasification techniques and key generation pathways for biofuels production, process design and integration and socio-environmental impacts of biofuel generation are discussed, with the goal of investigating gasification-to-biofuels’ credentials as a sustainable and eco-friendly technology. The synthesis of important biofuels such as bio-methanol, bio-ethanol and higher alcohols, bio-dimethyl ether, Fischer Tropsch fuels, bio-methane, bio-hydrogen and algae-based fuels is reviewed, together with recent technologies, catalysts and reactors. Significant thermodynamic studies for each biofuel are also examined. Syngas cleaning is demonstrated to be a critical issue for biofuel production, and innovative pathways such as those employed by Choren Industrietechnik, Germany, and BioMCN, the Netherlands, are shown to allow efficient methanol generation. The conversion of syngas to FT transportation fuels such as gasoline and diesel over Co or Fe catalysts is reviewed and demonstrated to be a promising option for the future of biofuels. Bio-methane has emerged as a lucrative alternative for conventional transportation fuel with all the advantages of natural gas including a dense distribution, trade and supply network. Routes to produce H2 are discussed, though critical issues such as storage, expensive production routes with low efficiencies remain. Algae-based fuels are in the research and development stage, but are shown to have immense potential to become commercially important because of their capability to fix large amounts of CO2, to rapidly grow in many environments and versatile end uses. However, suitable process configurations resulting in optimal plant designs are crucial, so detailed process integration is a powerful tool to optimize current and develop new processes. LCA and ethical issues are also discussed in brief. It is clear that the use of food crops, as opposed to food wastes represents an area fraught with challenges, which must be resolved on a case by case basis

    In vitro induction of tuber formation for the synthesis of secondary metabolites in Chlorophytum borivilianum Sant. et Fernand

    Chlorophytum borivilianum Sant. et Fernand an endangered herb is valued for several medicinal properties in its tuberous roots. An efficient and reproducible method for inducing in vitro tubers from stem disc explant has been developed. Stem disc possessing shoot buds were induced to develop multiple shoots in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with vitamins, 3% sucrose, 0.8% agar and 5 mg/L benzylaminopurine (BAP). Healthy regenerated shoots were rooted in MS basal medium containing 3% sucrose (w/v), 0.8% agar supplemented with indole-3-acetic acid (2 mg/L). On further sub culturing, the maximum percentage of tuber formation was obtained in growth hormone free half (½) MS liquid media supplemented with vitamins and 1.5% sucrose after 8 to 9 weeks. The saponin contents of the in vitro and in vivo raised tubers were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed by highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and liquid chromatography electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-MS). There was a significant similarity in the saponins in both tubers. The in vitro raised tubers showed similar high metabolite content than in vivo grown tubers which is required for medicinal applications. The rooted plantlets were transferred to peat and sand (2:1) with more than 80% success. This is the 1st report of in vitro tuber formation and secondary metabolites screening of C. borivilianum.     Calotropis procera (Aiton) W.T. Aiton, belonging to the family Apocynaceae is an important medicinal shrub. It is widely used in folklore and Ayurvedic system of medicine. Various parts of this plant were used to treat human diseases such as Pama (Scabies), Vicharchika (Eczema), Kasa (Cough), Mukhakrishnatwa (Hyperpigmentation of the face), Pleehodara (Splenomegaly) and preparation of Ayurvedic as well as traditional medicines like Arkalavana and Arkataila. The present communication deals with a detailed account of the pharmacognostic study of C. procera root and stem.     Influence of cysteamine supplementation during in vitro culture of early stage caprine embryos on blastocyst production

    The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of cysteamine supplementation on embryo development in mCR2 media. The COCs (1251) were matured in TCM–199 medium containing FSH (5µg/ml), LH (10µg/ml), follicular fluid (10%), FBS (10%) with 3 mg/ml BSA for 27h at 38.5°C and 5% CO2 in an incubator. Matured oocytes were co-cultured with 1×106 spermatozoa/ml collected from a Sirohi buck in fertTALP (10% FBS+ 4mg/ml BSA and 10 µg/ml heparin) for 18 h in incubation. After 18 h of sperm-oocytes, co-incubation of oocytes with sperms were washed in embryo development medium to remove sperm cells adhered to zonapellucida. Presumptive zygotes (1,171) were selected and randomly divided into 2 groups. Group 1, the presumptive zygotes (610) were cultured in mCR2aa as a control for 12 days. Group 2, the presumptive zygotes (561) were culture in mCR2aa medium supplemented with 100 µM cysteamine for 10 days. The percentage of cleavage, morula, and blastocyst production in groups 1 and 2 were 36.39% and 31.71% (cleavage); 21.62% and 30.89% (morula); 4.95% and 8.98% (blastocyst) respectively. In conclusion, results indicated that the addition of cysteamine to the IVC medium stimulates caprine embryo development and blastocyst production

This state (including Chattisgarh) is very rich in ethnic as well as floristic diversity. The tribals constitute about 23.27% of the total population and 35% area out of total geographical areas is covered by forest s. Most of the tribals still prefer to stay in and around the forests and depend wholly on the natural resources. They use several plants to fulfill their basic requirements like food, medicine, shelter, etc. Among the plants used, Mahua plays an important role in socio-economic life of tribal people.
