    Adoption of RRII 400 series rubber clones by rubber small growers

    The paper examines the response of small growers to the recommendation of multi-clonal planting in the context of release of RRII 400 series clones for commercial cultivation, since 2005. The data pertaining to 56080.6 ha under 130658 RPD permits, which availed subsidy from the Rubber Board during the seven year period from 2004 to 2010, were gathered from 26 Regional Offices of the Rubber Board located in the traditional rubber growing regions. The study revealed that the adoption had been characterised by the mono-clonal status (95.1%) of RRII 105 till the year 2004. However, the share of RRII 105 declined to 55.7 per cent in 2010. Conversely, share of RRII 400 series clones increased from 1.0 per cent in 2004 to 28 per cent in 2010 in the total planted area. But trends in adoption of new clones did not exhibit a consistent pattern across size-classes and regions during the post-release phase. It is in sharp contrast to the experience of RRII 105 since its release in 1980. Adoption of multi-clonal planting was only 2.6 per cent in 2004 which increased to more than 15 per cent in 2010. Multi-clonal planting was positively associated with the size of holdings during the period under review. But the strength of this relationship has been dependent on region-specific factors. Therefore, the study brings out the need for evolving a long term policy of region-specific clone recommendations based on life-cycle commercial yield performance

    The analysis of planting density of rubber in small holdings for the period 2004-2010 indicated multifaceted features over time. In the traditional belt, except in North Kerala, the planting density of new planting was higher than that of replanting. After the release of RRII 400 series in the year 2005, significantly higher planting density was adopted for it in South Kerala. In all other regions, no significant difference in planting density was noticed between RRII 105 and RRII 400 series in the case of new planting, but higher density was adopted for replanting of RRII 105.     Valence and State-Dependent Population Coding in Dopaminergic Neurons in the Fly Mushroom Body

    Neuromodulation permits flexibility of synapses, neural circuits, and ultimately behavior. One neuromodulator, dopamine, has been studied extensively in its role as a reward signal during learning and memory across animal species. Newer evidence suggests that dopaminergic neurons (DANs) can modulate sensory perception acutely, thereby allowing an animal to adapt its behavior and decision making to its internal and behavioral state. In addition, some data indicate that DANs are not homogeneous but rather convey different types of information as a heterogeneous population. We have investigated DAN population activity and how it could encode relevant information about sensory stimuli and state by taking advantage of the confined anatomy of DANs innervating the mushroom body (MB) of the fly Drosophila melanogaster. Using in vivo calcium imaging and a custom 3D image registration method, we found that the activity of the population of MB DANs encodes innate valence information of an odor or taste as well as the physiological state of the animal. Furthermore, DAN population activity is strongly correlated with movement, consistent with a role of dopamine in conveying behavioral state to the MB. Altogether, our data and analysis suggest that DAN population activities encode innate odor and taste valence, movement, and physiological state in a MB-compartment-specific manner.     Fragmentation of the High-mass "Starless'' Core G10.21-0.31: a Coherent Evolutionary Picture for Star Formation

    G10.21-0.31 is a 70 μ\mum-dark high-mass starless core (M>300M>300 M\mathrm{M_{\odot}} within r<0.15r<0.15 pc) identified in SpitzerSpitzer, HerschelHerschel, and APEX continuum surveys, and is believed to harbor the initial stages of high-mass star formation. We present ALMA and SMA observations to resolve the internal structure of this promising high-mass starless core. Sensitive high-resolution ALMA 1.3 mm dust continuum emission reveals three cores of mass ranging 11-18 M\mathrm{M_{\odot}}, characterized by a turbulent fragmentation. Core 1, 2, and 3 represent a coherent evolution at three different evolutionary stages, characterized by outflows (CO, SiO), gas temperature (H2CO\mathrm{H_2CO}), and deuteration (N2D+/N2H+\mathrm{N_2D^+/N_2H^+}). We confirm the potential to form high-mass stars in G10.21 and explore the evolution path of high-mass star formation. Yet, no high-mass prestellar core is present in G10.21.     A Neural Circuit Arbitrates between Persistence and Withdrawal in Hungry Drosophila

    In pursuit of food, hungry animals mobilize significant energy resources and overcome exhaustion and fear. How need and motivation control the decision to continue or change behavior is not understood. Using a single fly treadmill, we show that hungry flies persistently track a food odor and increase their effort over repeated trials in the absence of reward suggesting that need dominates negative experience. We further show that odor tracking is regulated by two mushroom body output neurons (MBONs) connecting the MB to the lateral horn. These MBONs, together with dopaminergic neurons and Dop1R2 signaling, control behavioral persistence. Conversely, an octopaminergic neuron, VPM4, which directly innervates one of the MBONs, acts as a brake on odor tracking by connecting feeding and olfaction. Together, our data suggest a function for the MB in internal state-dependent expression of behavior that can be suppressed by external inputs conveying a competing behavioral drive

    Evaluation and comparison of native and recombinant LipL21 protein-based ELISAs for diagnosis of bovine leptospirosis

    A 21-kDa leptospiral lipoprotein (LipL21) was evaluated for its diagnostic potential to detect bovine leptospirosis by ELISA. Both native LipL21 (nLipL21) and recombinant LipL21 (rLipL21) proteins were tested and compared regarding diagnostic efficiency, and no statistically significant difference was observed. The sensitivity of rLipL21 ELISA for 62 microscopic agglutination test (MAT) positive sera was 100% and the specificity with 378 MAT negative sera was 97.09%. Thus, rLipL21 protein-based ELISA could be used as an alternative to MAT for the diagnosis of bovine leptospirosis

    Tomato yellow leaf curl virus (TYLCV) is a major devastating viral disease, majorly affecting the tomato production globally. The disease is majorly transmitted by the Whitefly. The Begomovirus (TYLCV) having a six major protein coding genes, among them the C1/AC1 is evidently associated with viral replication. Owing to immense role of C1/AC1 gene, the present study is an initial effort to elucidate the factors shaping the codon usage bias and evolutionary pattern of TYLCV-C1/AC1 gene in five major Asian countries. Based on publically available nucleotide sequence data the Codon usage pattern, Evolutionary and Phylogeographic reconstruction was carried out. The study revealed the presence of significant variation between the codon bias indices in all the selected regions. Implying that the codon usage pattern indices (eNC, CAI, RCDI, GRAVY, Aromo) are seriously affected by selection and mutational pressure, taking a supremacy in shaping the codon usage bias of viral gene. Further, the tMRCA age was 1853, 1939, 1855, 1944, 1828 for China, India, Iran, Oman and South Korea, respectively for TYLCV-C1/AC1 gene. The integrated analysis of Codon usage bias, Evolutionary rate and Phylogeography analysis in viruses signifies the positive role of selection and mutational pressure among the selected regions for TYLCV (C1/AC1) gene

    Determination of putative virulence factors among clinical isolates of enterococci isolated from a military hospital in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia

    Background: The pathogenic potential of enterococci to produce life-threatening infections is well-documented. The scientific community has, of late, evinced a renewed interest in the putative virulence factors of enterococci. Objective of the study was to determine the putative virulence factors of clinically isolated Enterococcus species from a military hospital and to describe the association between virulence factors and vancomycin susceptibility.Methods: A total of 245 enterococci were isolated from clinical samples collected from KFMMC, a leading military hospital in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Following species identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing using the Vitek 2 system; the isolates were tested for the production of caseinase, gelatinase, biofilm, and presence of haemolysin.Results: Among the enterococcal isolates, 36.7% produced caseinase, 38% produced gelatinase, 24.1% exhibited biofilm formation, and 30.6% were positive for haemolytic activity. A significant association between vancomycin susceptibility patterns and the virulence factors, gelatinase and haemolytic activity, were noted. No significant associations were observed between vancomycin susceptibility patterns and the presence of caseinase or the formation of biofilms.Conclusions: Virulence factors are invariably produced by several clinical isolates of enterococci in our hospital, and some virulence factors are associated with vancomycin susceptibility

    Ontogenetic Development of Digestive Tract and Enzymes Activity in Hatchery-reared Pink Ear Emperor, Lethrinus lentjan Larvae

    Ontogenetic development of the digestive tract and associated organs of Lethrinus lentjan larvae was were learned by observing changes in external morphology, histology, and enzymatic changes from hatchling to 40-day post-hatching (dph). Ontogenetic development of the L. lentjan digestive system can be divided into three major stages; the first stage from hatching of larvae to complete absorption of yolksac, which ends on 2 dph, the second stage from 3 to 15 dph i.e., from exogenous feeding to the formation of the gastric gland and third stage till completion of metamorphosis (35 dph). Pyloric caeca were developed after 20 dph, which was formed entirely by 27 dph. Enzymatic activities of amylase, lipase, trypsin and chymotrypsin were detected before the onset of exogenous feeding and pepsin was detected from 19 dph onwards in L. lentjan. So considering both histology of digestive tract and enzyme development, weaning of L. lentjan larvae to artificial diet can be practiced after 19-20 dph coinciding with the formation of pyloric caeca and production of pepsin enzyme for better digestibility and consequently better growth and survival.
