    Dynamical horizon of evaporating black hole in Vaidya spacetime

    We consider how the mass of the black hole decreases by the Hawking radiation in the Vaidya spacetime, using the concept of dynamical horizon equation, proposed by Ashtekar and Krishnan. Using the formula for the change of the dynamical horizon, we derive an equation for the mass incorporating the Hawking radiation. It is shown that final state is the Minkowski spacetime in our particular model.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure

    Nitrogen Fixation Mutants of the Actinobacterium Frankia Casuarinae CcI3

    Frankia is a representative genus of nitrogen-fixing (N2-fixing) actinobacteria; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying various phenomena such as the differentiation of a N2 fixation-specific structure (vesicle) and the regulation of N2 fixation (nif) genes, have yet to be elucidated in detail. In the present study, we screened hyphal fragments of Frankia casuarinae that were mutagenized by 1-methyl-3-nitro-1-nitrosoguanidine or gamma rays, and isolated 49 candidate N2 fixation mutants. Twelve of these mutants were selected for further study, and their abilities to grow in NH3-deficient (N-) liquid media and their rates of acetylene reduction activities were evaluated. Eleven mutant strains were confirmed to lack the ability to fix N2. Five mutant strains formed significantly reduced numbers of vesicles, while some failed to form large mature vesicles. These vesicle mutants also exhibited an aberrant hyphal morphology, suggesting a relationship between vesicle differentiation and hyphal branching. Ten mutants showed significant reductions in the expression of nifE, nifH, and nifV genes under N- conditions. The genome sequencing of eight mutants identified 20 to 400 mutations. Although mutant strains N3H4 and N6F4 shared a large number of mutations (108), most were unique to each strain. Mutant strain N7C9 had 3 mutations in the nifD and nifH genes that may result in the inability to fix N2. The other mutant strains did not have any mutations in any known N2 fixation-related genes, indicating that they are novel N2 fixation mutants

    Correlated Binomial Models and Correlation Structures

    We discuss a general method to construct correlated binomial distributions by imposing several consistent relations on the joint probability function. We obtain self-consistency relations for the conditional correlations and conditional probabilities. The beta-binomial distribution is derived by a strong symmetric assumption on the conditional correlations. Our derivation clarifies the 'correlation' structure of the beta-binomial distribution. It is also possible to study the correlation structures of other probability distributions of exchangeable (homogeneous) correlated Bernoulli random variables. We study some distribution functions and discuss their behaviors in terms of their correlation structures.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

    Full thickness macular hole case after intravitreal aflibercept treatment

    BACKGROUND: The pathogenesis of macular hole formation is widely accepted as a tractional force at the vitreo-retinal interface in fovea. We report a case of macular hole after intravitreous aflibercept injection for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) associated with contraction of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) at the edge of a fibrovascular pigment epithelial detachment (PED). CASE PRESENTATION: A 94-year old man with neovascular AMD affecting his left eye accompanied by a fibrovascular PED was examined for severe vision loss. Although RPE tear in his left eye was identified before the first aflibercept intravitreous injection performed in order to treat neovascular AMD, he received three aflibercept injections as induction treatment. After induction treatment, a full thickness macular hole was identified associated with the contracted rolled RPE edge beneath the retina. CONCLUSION: Macular hole is commonly formed associated with tangential vitreous traction. Current report suggests that rapid contraction of the RPE underneath the retina can be one of the causes of a macular hole, and one of the side effects of anti-VEGF therapy for neovascular AMD

    Validation of the Japanese version of the Dementia Screening Questionnaire for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities

    Background, Dementia in people with intellectual disabilities (IDs) is difficult to detect because of preexisting cognitive deficits. An effective screening method is required. The Dementia Screening Questionnaire for Individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (DSQIID) was developed as an observer rating tool to screen dementia in people with ID. The aim of this study was to verify the screening accuracy of the DSQIID for Japanese people with ID. Methods Four‐hundred ninety‐three subjects with ID participated in this study. Caregivers who had observed the participants for more than 2 years scored the Japanese version of the DSQIID (DSQIID‐J) of the participants. Three doctors examined participants directly and diagnosed dementia using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition criteria. To identify the key screening items that predict dementia, the specificities of a single and pairs of items with 100% sensitivity were evaluated relative to the dementia diagnosis. Results Of 493 participants, 34 were people with Down syndrome (DS), and 459 were people without DS. Seventeen participants were diagnosed with dementia. The suitable cut‐off score of the DSQIID‐J was 10/11 (sensitivity 100% and specificity 96.8%) for screening dementia. The inter‐rater reliability, test–retest reliability and internal consistency of the DSQIID‐J were excellent. Regarding key items, there was no single item with 100% sensitivity, and the best two‐item combination was the pair of ‘Cannot dress without help’ and ‘Walks slower’ (sensitivity 100% and specificity 93.5%). Conclusions We identified several important question items of the DSQIID‐J related to the diagnosis of dementia in people with ID. The DSQIID‐J is a useful screening tool for dementia in adults with ID

    Reverberation Measurements of the Inner Radius of the Dust Torus in Nearby Seyfert 1 Galaxies

    The most intense monitoring observations yet made in the optical (UBV) and near-infrared (JHK) wave bands were carried out for nearby Seyfert1 galaxies of NGC 5548, NGC 4051, NGC 3227, and NGC 7469. Over three years of observations with MAGNUM telescope since early 2001, clear time-delayed response of the K-band flux variations to the V-band flux variations was detected for all of these galaxies. Their H-K color temperature was estimated to be 1500-1800 K from the observed flux variation gradients, which supports a view that the bulk of the K flux should originate in the thermal radiation of hot dust that surrounds the central engine. Cross-correlation analysis was performed to quantify the lag time corresponding to the light-travel distance of the hot dust region from the central engine. The measured lag time is 47-53 days for NGC 5548, 11-18 days for NGC 4051, about 20 days for NGC 3227, and 65-87 days for NGC 7469. We found that the lag time is tightly correlated with the optical luminosity as expected from dust reverberation (Δt∝L0.5\Delta t \propto L^{0.5}), while only weakly with the central virial mass, which suggests that an inner radius of the dust torus around the active nucleus has a one-to-one correspondence to central luminosity. In the lag time versus central luminosity diagram, the K-band lag times place an upper boundary on the similar lag times of broad-emission lines in the literature. This not only supports the unified scheme of AGNs, but also implies a physical transition from the BLR out to the dust torus that encircles the BLR. Furthermore, our V-band flux variations of NGC 5548 on timescales of up to 10 days are found to correlate with X-ray variations and delay behind them by one or two days, indicating the thermal reprocessing of X-ray emission by the central accretion flow.Comment: ApJ, March 2006, v639 issue, 24 pages, 33 figures, 10 table

    Fast algorithm for calculating two-photon absorption spectra

    We report a numerical calculation of the two-photon absorption coefficient of electrons in a binding potential using the real-time real-space higher-order difference method. By introducing random vector averaging for the intermediate state, the task of evaluating the two-dimensional time integral is reduced to calculating two one-dimensional integrals. This allows the reduction of the computation load down to the same order as that for the linear response function. The relative advantage of the method compared to the straightforward multi-dimensional time integration is greater for the calculation of non-linear response functions of higher order at higher energy resolution.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures.     Direct Patterning of Boron-doped Amorphous Carbon Using Focused Ion Beam-assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition

    The deposition of boron-doped amorphous carbon thin films on SiO2 substrate was achieved via a focused ion beam-assisted chemical vapor deposition of triphenyl borane (C18H15B) and triphenyl borate (C18H15BO3). The existence of boron in the deposited film from triphenyl borane, with a precursor temperature of 90 {\deg}C, was confirmed by a core level X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The film exhibited a semiconducting behavior with a band gap of 285 meV. Although the band gap was decreased to 197 meV after an annealing process, the film was still semiconductor. Additionally, a drastic reduction of the resistance on the deposited film by applying pressures was observed from an in-situ electrical transport measurements using a diamond anvil cell

    Phylogenetic and mutational analyses of human LEUTX, a homeobox gene implicated in embryogenesis

    Recently, human PAIRED-LIKE homeobox transcription factor (TF) genes were discovered whose expression is limited to the period of embryo genome activation up to the 8-cell stage. One of these TFs is LEUTX, but its importance for human embryogenesis is still subject to debate. We confirmed that human LEUTX acts as a TAATCC-targeting transcriptional activator, like other K50-type PAIRED-LIKE TFs. Phylogenetic comparisons revealed that Leutx proteins are conserved across Placentalia and comprise two conserved domains, the homeodomain, and a Leutx-specific domain containing putative transcriptional activation motifs (9aa TAD). Examination of human genotype resources revealed 116 allelic variants in LEUTX. Twenty-four variants potentially affect function, but they occur only heterozygously at low frequency. One variant affects a DNA-specificity determining residue, mutationally reachable by a one-base transition. In vitro and in silico experiments showed that this LEUTX mutation (alanine to valine at position 54 in the homeodomain) results in a transactivational loss-of-function to a minimal TAATCC-containing promoter and a 36 bp motif enriched in genes involved in embryo genome activation. A compensatory change in residue 47 restores function. The results support the notion that human LEUTX functions as a transcriptional activator important for human embryogenesis.Peer reviewe
