Quantum Fields a la Sylvester and Witt

A structural explanation of the coupling constants in the standard model, i.e the fine structure constant and the Weinberg angle, and of the gauge fixing contributions is given in terms of symmetries and representation theory. The coupling constants are normalizations of Lorentz invariantly embedded little groups (spin and polarization) arising in a harmonic analysis of quantum vector fields. It is shown that the harmonic analysis of massless fields requires an extension of the familiar Fourier decomposition, containing also indefinite unitary nondecomposable time representations. This is illustrated by the nonprobabilistic contributions in the electromagnetic field.Comment: 18 pages LaTeX file (62 kB), all macros are include

Realizations of Causal Manifolds by Quantum Fields

    Get PDF
Quantum mechanical operators and quantum fields are interpreted as realizations of timespace manifolds. Such causal manifolds are parametrized by the classes of the positive unitary operations in all complex operations, i.e. by the homogenous spaces \D(n)=\GL(\C^n_\R)/\U(n) with n=1n=1 for mechanics and n=2n=2 for relativistic fields. The rank nn gives the number of both the discrete and continuous invariants used in the harmonic analysis, i.e. two characteristic masses in the relativistic case. 'Canonical' field theories with the familiar divergencies are inappropriate realizations of the real 4-dimensional causal manifold \D(2). Faithful timespace realizations do not lead to divergencies. In general they are reducible, but nondecomposable - in addition to representations with eigenvectors (states, particle) they incorporate principal vectors without a particle (eigenvector) basis as exemplified by the Coulomb field.Comment: 36 pages, latex, macros include

The Central Correlations of Hypercharge, Isospin, Colour and Chirality in the Standard Model

    Get PDF
The correlation of the fractionally represented hypercharge group with the isospin and colour group in the standard model determines as faithfully represented internal group the quotient group {\U(1)\x\SU(2)\x\SU(3)\over\Z_2\x\Z_3}. The discrete cyclic central abelian-nonabelian internal correlation involved is considered with respect to its consequences for the representations by the standard model fields, the electroweak mixing angle and the symmetry breakdown. There exists a further discrete Z2\Z_2-correlation between chirality and Lorentz properties and also a continuous \U(1)-external-internal one between hyperisospin and chirality.Comment: 18 pages, latex, macros include

Prenatal diagnosis of trisomy 6q25.3-qter and monosomy 10q26.12-qter by array CGH in a fetus with an apparently normal karyotype.

We present the prenatal case of a 12.5-Mb duplication involving 6q25-qter and a 12.2-Mb deletion encompassing 10q26-qter diagnosed by aCGH, while conventional karyotype showed normal results. The genotype-phenotype correlation between individual microarray and clinical findings adds to the emerging atlas of chromosomal abnormalities associated with specific prenatal ultrasound abnormalities

Trends of Medicinal Plant Use over the Last 2000 Years in Central Europe

Medicinal plant knowledge in Central Europe can be traced back from the present to antiquity, through written sources. Approximately 100 medicinal plant taxa have a history of continuous use. In this paper, we focus on use patterns over time and the link between historical and traditional uses with the current scientific evidence. We discuss our findings against the backdrop of changing eras and medicinal concepts. Based on use-records from totally 16 historical, popular and scientific herbals, we analyze how use categories of 102 medicinal plant taxa developed over time. Overall, 56 of the 102 taxa maintained continuous use throughout all time periods. For approximately 30% of the continuous uses, scientific evidence supporting their use exists, compared to 11% for recently added uses and 6% for discontinuous uses. Dermatology and gastroenterology are use categories that are relevant across all time periods. They are associated with a high diversity of medicinal taxa and continuously used medicinal species with scientific evidence. Antidotes, apotropaic (protective) magic, and humoral detoxification were important use categories in the past. New applications reflecting biomedical progress and epidemiological challenges are cardiovascular and tonic uses. Changes in medicinal concepts are mirrored in plant use and specifically in changes in the importance of use categories. Our finding supports the concept of social validation of plant uses, i.e., the assumption that longstanding use practice and tradition may suggest efficacy and safety

EPB41L5 is Associated with the Metastatic Potential of Low-grade Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors

    Get PDF
Background/Aim: Low-grade pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (LG-PNETs) behave unpredictably. The aim of the study was to identify biomarkers that predict PNET metastasis to improve treatment selection. Patients and Methods: Five patients with primary non-metastatic LG-PNETs, six with primary LG-PNETs with synchronous or metachronous metastases (M-PNETs), and six metastatic to liver LG-PNETs (ML-PNETs) from the group of six M-PNET patients were selected. RNA data were normalized using iterative rank-order normalization. Student’s t-test identified differentially-expressed genes in LG-PNETs versus M-PNETs. A 2-fold difference in expression was considered to be significant. Results were validated with an independent dataset of LG-PNETs and metastatic LG-PNETs. Results: Overall, 195 genes had a >2-fold change (in either direction). A total of 29 genes were differentially overexpressed in M-PNETs. Erythrocyte membrane protein band 4.1-like 5 (EPB41L5) had a 2.07-fold change increase in M-PNETs and the smallest p-value. EPB41L5 was not statistically different between M-PNETs and ML-PNETs. EPB41L5 differential expression between primary and metastatic LG-PNETs was confirmed by immunohistochemistry. Conclusion: These results support further investigation into whether EPB41L5 is a biomarker of PNETs with high risk for metastases

    Simplicial quantum dynamics

Present-day quantum field theory can be regularized by a decomposition into quantum simplices. This replaces the infinite-dimensional Hilbert space by a high-dimensional spinor space and singular canonical Lie groups by regular spin groups. It radically changes the uncertainty principle for small distances. Gaugeons, including the gravitational, are represented as bound fermion-pairs, and space-time curvature as a singular organized limit of quantum non-commutativity. Keywords: Quantum logic, quantum set theory, quantum gravity, quantum topology, simplicial quantization.Comment: 25 pages. 1 table. Preparation and Evaluation of Silymarin β-cyclodextrin Molecular Inclusion Complexes

    Get PDF
Silymarin is a hepatoprotective agent, having poor water solubility and oral absorption of about 23 – 47%, leading to low bioavailability of the drug. The aim of the present study is to improve the solubility and dissolution rate and in turn the hepatoprotective activity of the drug, by formulating its inclusion complex with beta (β)-cyclodextrin, using different methods. The phase solubility analysis indicates the formation of 1:1 molar inclusion complex of the drug with beta cyclodextrin. Apparent stability constant for Silymarin (Kc) was 722 K-1 with β-cyclodextrin complex. The inclusion complexes were prepared by four different methods, namely, physical mixing, kneading, co-precipitation, and solvent evaporation. The prepared complexes were characterized using differential scanning colorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, and x-ray diffractometry. The inclusion complex prepared by the co-precipitation methods exhibits an overall best result, with respect to the formulation of sustained release formulations

First Measurement of the Transverse Spin Asymmetries of the Deuteron in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering

First measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarized 6-LiD target are presented. The data were taken in 2002 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160 GeV/c. The Collins asymmetry turns out to be compatible with zero, as does the measured Sivers asymmetry within the present statistical errors.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figure
