    An ethnobotanical study was undertaken to collect information about the use of medicinal plants in Attappadi hills, Palakkad district, Kerala during December 2012 to February 2013. A total of 51 species of ethanomedicinal plants belonging to 30 families were reported with the help of standardized questionnaires. This survey is mostly useful for rural area of local people. Total phenol and DPPH activity was carried out for Pimenta dioica. The aqueous stem extract of P.dioica showed higher total phenolic content and acetone extract exhibited the more free radical scavenging activity. These findings show that the plant provide substantial antioxidant activity

    A lot of medicinal plants, traditionally used for thousands of years, are present in a group of herbal preparations of the Indian traditional health care system (Ayurveda) named Rasayana proposed for their interesting antioxidant activities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate antioxidant activities of various solvent extract of Bryophyllum pinnatum (Lank.). Total phenols and flavonoids were analyzed according to the Folin–Ciocalteu method and total antioxidant activity of various solvent extracts of Bryophyllum pinnatum (Lank.) leaves was assessed by metal chelating assay, 2,2’-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) as well as 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. Ethanol extract exhibited excellent antioxidant activity, as measured using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl (DPPH) and total antioxidant assays

    DEVELOPMENT OF ANTIOXIDANT RICH INSTANT BISCUIT MIX

    Objective: Bakery products are important processed foods, commonly consumed across the world. Bakery products have become essential and significant components of the dietary profile of the people. Among that biscuits are the fast growing bakery products in India, because of consumer demand for convenient, safety, low cast, shelf life, verity taste and flavor but those are lack in nutrients and antioxidants. Methods: To increase the nutrient content in biscuit mix, Wheat flour was added with maida and sugar at three variations (V1-50:50, V2-60:40, V3-70:30) and subjected to organoleptic evaluation. Antioxidant mix (Poshak Pro mix) was formulated using antioxidant rich foods like Finger millet, Black Gram Dhal, Spinach, Carrot, Guava and Sesame seeds. These were processed and formulated into three mixes (Finger millet based mix, Black Gram Dhal based mix and Carrot based mix) and subjected to DPPH radical scavenging test. The mix having highest activity was selected and incorporated into wheat flour biscuit mix at three variations (V1-20:80, V2-3:70, V3-40:60) and subjected to organoleptic evaluation. The accepted variation was analyzed for nutrient and shelf life at polythene and aluminum foil covers. Results: Among the three wheat flour: Maida variations, V3-70:30 was selected in organoleptic evaluation. In DPPH radical scavenging test Finger Milled based mix was selected and incorporated into selected wheat flour biscuit mix at three variations. V1 (20:80) was selected and nutrients analysis showed that it is rich in β-carotene. In shelf life study, both (polythene and aluminum foil) covers were accepted for packaging. Conclusion: The study proved that local commodities rich in antioxidants can be utilized effectively and economically to improve the health status of the people

    Prediction of Protein Tertiary Structure using Genetic Algorithm

    Proteins are essential for the biological processes in the human body. They can only perform their functions when they fold into their tertiary structure .Protein structure can be determined experimentally and computationally. Experimental methods are time consuming and high-priced and it is not always feasible to identify the protein structure experimentally. In order to predict the protein structure using computational methods, the problem is formulated as an optimization problem and the goal is to find the lowest free energy conformation. In this paper, Genetic Algorithm (GA) based optimization is used. This algorithm is adapted to search the protein conformational search space to find the lowest free energy conformation. Interestingly, the algorithm was able to find the lowest free energy conformation for a test protein (i.e. Met enkephalin) using ECEPP force fields

    In Vitro screening of larvicidal and insecticidal activity of methanolic extracts of Artocarpus heterophyllus, Artocarpus altilis and Piper betle

    The aim of this work was to evaluate the larvicidal and insecticidal activity of the selected plants namelyArtocarpus altilis, Piper betle and Artocarpus heterophyllus. The leaves of Artocarpus altilis and Artocarpus heterophyllus and roots of Piper betle were subjected to methanolic solvent extraction for the isolation of various bioactive constituents. The evaluation of larvicidal activity was carried out using late third instar larvae of Drosophila melanogaster. The insecticidal activity of extracts was studied against adult Bruchus pisorum, Tribolium castaneum, Sitophilus oryzae and was evaluated by direct contact application method .Nucleic acids and protein contents are regarded as important biomarkers of the metabolic potential of cells, as these play the main role in regulating the different activities of cells. Piper betle and Artocarpus heterophyllusextractshad a reducing effect on the nucleic acid and protein content in the larvae in a dose dependent manner whereas Artocarpus altilis extract did not exhibit any significant larvicidal activity. Piper betle and Artocarpus heterophyllusextractsshowed good insecticidal activity whereas A.altilis extract showed poor insecticidal activity. The results of the present study clearly indicate that Piper betle and Artocarpus heterophyllus extracts can be developed as ecofriendly larvicides and were also quite effective as insecticides for providing a better and excellent alternate for the control of insects

    PREPARATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF NITRENDIPINE LOADED GRAFTED COPOLYMER MICROSPHERES: A PRELIMINARY STUDY

    Objectives: Developing countries like India suffers mostly from cardiovascular problems and kidney failure. An antihypertensive drug is mainly used to avoid the cardiovascular problems and kidney failure. Nitrendipine is a calcium antagonist widely used in the treatment of hypertension. The bioavailability of drug, when administered orally, is low. Sustained drug delivery systems are using microspheres emerging as an effective method to increase the bioavailability of the drug. The current work involves the encapsulation of nitrendipine - acrylamide grafted chitosan which helps to overcome poor solubility and hydrophobic nature of the nitrendipine. This will enhance the drug dissolution and reduce the side effects of the antihypertensive drug.Methods: By emulsion cross-linking method, grafted copolymers were prepared. The physicochemical interactions between the drug and grafted copolymer were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC).Results: Encapsulated drug and grafted copolymer were characterized by FTIR to understand the chemical interactions and to identify the functional groups present. Morphology and particle size of the grafted copolymer with drug and without drug were assessed by SEM. DSC was used to identify the melting endotherms of a drug, copolymer cross-linked microspheres, and drug encapsulated microspheres.Conclusion: Thus, the drug encapsulated grafted copolymer increases the hydrophilic character and thereby making the polymers feasible for functioning as drug carriers for sustained drug delivery system
