Differential evolution for the offline and online optimization of fed-batch fermentation processes
The optimization of input variables (typically feeding trajectories over
time) in fed-batch fermentations has gained special attention, given the economic impact
and the complexity of the problem. Evolutionary Computation (EC) has been a
source of algorithms that have shown good performance in this task. In this chapter,
Differential Evolution (DE) is proposed to tackle this problem and quite promising
results are shown. DE is tested in several real world case studies and compared with
other EC algorihtms, such as Evolutionary Algorithms and Particle Swarms. Furthermore,
DE is also proposed as an alternative to perform online optimization, where the
input variables are adjusted while the real fermentation process is ongoing. In this case,
a changing landscape is optimized, therefore making the task of the algorithms more
difficult. However, that fact does not impair the performance of the DE and confirms

Associations Between Fatigue and Endocrine and Non-endocrine Health Problems in Turner Syndrome:Cohort Study and Review
CONTEXT: Turner syndrome (TS) is a rare chromosomal disorder characterized by gonadal dysfunction, short stature, and heart defects, among other features. Women with TS often suffer from severe fatigue, for which they are typically referred to endocrinologists. The diagnostic work-up is generally time-consuming and invasive, and it rarely solves the problem. To prevent the personal and financial burden of unnecessary diagnostic procedures, it is crucial to understand fatigue in TS. OBJECTIVE: To explore the association between fatigue and endocrine and non-endocrine comorbidities in a-for rare disorders-large group of women with TS. METHODS: 170 genetically confirmed women with TS who attended the TS Reference Center underwent a systematic health screening, including a structured interview, complete physical examination, biochemical measurements, perceived stress and fatigue questionnaires, and additional tests when indicated. RESULTS: Median (interquartile range) age was 32.6 (23.9-41.4) years. Severe fatigue was experienced by 1 in 3 women with TS. Liver enzyme disturbances and body mass index were significantly associated with higher fatigue scores. Perceived stress was highly correlated with fatigue. CONCLUSION: There was no association between fatigue and most endocrine and non-endocrine disorders, which implies that fatigue is only partly explained by somatic disorders. The high correlation between perceived stress and fatigue suggests that TS-related neuropsychological processes may play an important role in the etiology of fatigue in women with TS. We provide a practical algorithm for the endocrine, non-endocrine, and psychological approach to fatigue in women with TS.</p
Relative toxicity and residual activity of insecticides used in blueberry pest management: mortality of natural enemies
ABSTRACT A series of bioassays were conducted to determine the relative toxicities and residual activities of insecticides labeled for use in blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) on natural enemies, to identify products with low toxicity or short duration effects on biological control agents. In total, 14 insecticides were evaluated using treated petri dishes and four commercially available natural enemies (Aphidius colemani Viereck, Orius insidiosus [Say], Chrysoperla rufilabris [Burmeister], and Hippodamia convergens [Gué rin-Mené ville]). Dishes were aged under greenhouse conditions for 0, 3, 7, or 14 d before introducing insects to test residual activity. Acute effects (combined mortality and knockdown) varied by insecticide, residue age, and natural enemy species. Broad-spectrum insecticides caused high mortality to all biocontrol agents, whereas products approved for use in organic agriculture had little effect. The reduced-risk insecticide acetamiprid consistently caused signiÞcant acute effects, even after aging for 14 d. Methoxyfenozide, novaluron, and chlorantraniliprole, which also are classiÞed as reduced-risk insecticides, had low toxicity, and along with the organic products could be compatible with biological control. This study provides information to guide blueberry growers in their selection of insecticides. Further research will be needed to determine whether adoption of a pest management program based on the use of more selective insecticides will result in higher levels of biological control in blueberry

Strong transfer channels in the (6)Li+(28)Si system at near-barrier energies
Exclusive alpha-particle and proton production measurements of the system (6)Li+(28)Si are performed at near-barrier energies. Each reaction channel is tagged via a particle-gamma coincidence requirement. Ratios of direct to compound contributions are estimated via particle angular distribution measurements. Strong reaction channels for n and p transfer are identified and quantified and found to be described well on a qualitative basis with distorted-wave Born approximation calculations.Physical Review
Identification of InuR, a new Zn(II)2Cys6 transcriptional activator involved in the regulation of inulinolytic genes in Aspergillus niger
The expression of inulinolytic genes in Aspergillus niger is co-regulated and induced by inulin and sucrose. We have identified a positive acting transcription factor InuR, which is required for the induced expression of inulinolytic genes. InuR is a member of the fungal specific class of transcription factors of the Zn(II)2Cys6 type. Involvement of InuR in inulin and sucrose metabolism was suspected because of the clustering of inuR gene with sucB, which encodes an intracellular invertase with transfructosylation activity and a putative sugar transporter encoding gene (An15g00310). Deletion of the inuR gene resulted in a strain displaying a severe reduction in growth on inulin and sucrose medium. Northern analysis revealed that expression of inulinolytic and sucrolytic genes, e.g., inuE, inuA, sucA, as well as the putative sugar transporter gene (An15g00310) is dependent on InuR. Genome-wide expression analysis revealed, three additional putative sugar transporters encoding genes (An15g04060, An15g03940 and An17g01710), which were strongly induced by sucrose in an InuR dependent way. In silico analysis of the promoter sequences of strongly InuR regulated genes suggests that InuR might bind as dimer to two CGG triplets, which are separated by eight nucleotides
Aspergillus as a multi-purpose cell factory: current status and perspectives
Aspergilli have a long history in biotechnology as expression platforms for the production of food ingredients, pharmaceuticals and enzymes. The achievements made during the last years, however, have the potential to revolutionize Aspergillus biotechnology and to assure Aspergillus a dominant place among microbial cell factories. This mini-review will highlight most recent breakthroughs in fundamental and applied Aspergillus research with a focus on new molecular tools, techniques and products. New trends and concepts related to Aspergillus genomics and systems biology will be discussed as well as the challenges that have to be met to integrate omics data with metabolic engineering attempts
