On Revenue Monotonicity in Combinatorial Auctions
Along with substantial progress made recently in designing near-optimal
mechanisms for multi-item auctions, interesting structural questions have also
been raised and studied. In particular, is it true that the seller can always
extract more revenue from a market where the buyers value the items higher than
another market? In this paper we obtain such a revenue monotonicity result in a
general setting. Precisely, consider the revenue-maximizing combinatorial
auction for items and buyers in the Bayesian setting, specified by a
valuation function and a set of independent item-type
distributions. Let denote the maximum revenue achievable under
by any incentive compatible mechanism. Intuitively, one would expect that
if distribution stochastically dominates .
Surprisingly, Hart and Reny (2012) showed that this is not always true even for
the simple case when is additive. A natural question arises: Are these
deviations contained within bounds? To what extent may the monotonicity
intuition still be valid? We present an {approximate monotonicity} theorem for
the class of fractionally subadditive (XOS) valuation functions , showing
that if stochastically dominates under
where is a universal constant. Previously, approximate monotonicity was
known only for the case : Babaioff et al. (2014) for the class of additive
valuations, and Rubinstein and Weinberg (2015) for all subaddtive valuation
functions.Comment: 10 page
Generation of superoxide and singlet oxygen from α-tocopherolquinone and analogues.
Three potential routes to generation of reactive oxygen species from a tocopherolquinone have been identified. The quinone of the water-soluble vitamin E analogue Trolox C (Trol-Q) is reduced by hydrated electron and isopropanol a hydroxyalkyl radical, and the resulting semiquinone reacts with molecular oxygen to form superoxide with a second order rate constant of 1.3 x 108 dm3 mol-1 s-1, illustrating the potential for redox cycling. Illumination (UV-A, 355 nm) of the quinone of 2,2,5,7,8-pentamethyl-6-hydroxychromanol (PMHC-Q) leads to a reactive short-lived (ca 10-6 s) triplet state, able to oxidise tryptophan with a second order rate constant greater than 109 dm3 mol-1 s-1. The triplet states of these quinones sensitize singlet oxygen formation with quantum yields of about 0.8. Such potentially damaging reactions of a tocopherolquinone may in part account for the recent findings that high levels of dietary vitamin E supplementation lack any beneficial effect and may lead to slightly enhanced levels of overall mortality
Incorporation of a selective sigma-2 receptor ligand enhances uptake of liposomes by multiple cancer cells
Background: The sigma-2 receptor is an attractive target for tumor imaging and targeted therapy because it is overexpressed in multiple types of solid tumors, including prostate cancer, breast cancer, and lung cancer. SV119 is a synthetic small molecule that binds to sigma-2 receptors with high affinity and specificity. This study investigates the utility of SV119 in mediating the selective targeting of liposomal vectors in various types of cancer cells. Methods: SV119 was covalently linked with polyethylene glycol-dioleyl amido aspartic acid conjugate (PEG-DOA) to generate a novel functional lipid, SV119-PEG-DOA. This lipid was utilized for the preparation of targeted liposomes to enhance their uptake by cancer cells. Liposomes with various SV119 densities (0, 1, 3, and 5 mole%) were prepared and their cellular uptake was investigated in several tumor cell lines. In addition, doxorubicin (DOX) was loaded into the targeted and unmodified liposomes, and the cytotoxic effect on the DU-145 cells was evaluated by MTT assay. Results: Liposomes with or without SV119-PEG-DOA both have a mean diameter of approximately 90 nm and a neutral charge. The incorporation of SV119-PEG-DOA significantly increased the cellular uptake of liposomes by the DU-145, PC-3, A549, 201T, and MCF-7 tumor cells, which was shown by fluorescence microscopy and the quantitative measurement of fluorescence intensity. In contrast, the incorporation of SV119 did not increase the uptake of liposomes by the normal BEAS-2B cells. In a time course study, the uptake of SV119 liposomes by DU-145 cells was also significantly higher at each time point compared to the unmodified liposomes. Furthermore, the DOX-loaded SV119 liposomes showed significantly higher cytotoxicity to DU-145 cells compared to the DOX-loaded unmodified liposomes. Conclusion: SV119 liposomes were developed for targeted drug delivery to cancer cells. The targeting efficiency and specificity of SV119 liposomes to cancer cells was demonstrated in vitro. The results of this study suggest that SV119-modified liposomes might be a promising drug carrier for tumor-targeted delivery. © 2012 Zhang et al, publisher and licensee Dove Medical Press Ltd
Nilpotent normal form for divergence-free vector fields and volume-preserving maps
We study the normal forms for incompressible flows and maps in the
neighborhood of an equilibrium or fixed point with a triple eigenvalue. We
prove that when a divergence free vector field in has nilpotent
linearization with maximal Jordan block then, to arbitrary degree, coordinates
can be chosen so that the nonlinear terms occur as a single function of two
variables in the third component. The analogue for volume-preserving
diffeomorphisms gives an optimal normal form in which the truncation of the
normal form at any degree gives an exactly volume-preserving map whose inverse
is also polynomial inverse with the same degree.Comment: laTeX, 20 pages, 1 figur
Scalar form factors and nuclear interactions
The scalar-isoscalar term in the two-pion exchange potential is
abnormally large and does not respect the hierarchy of effects predicted by
chiral perturbation theory. We argue that this anomaly is associated with
non-perturbative effects, which are also present in the scalar form
factor.Comment: Talk given at the 20EFB, Pisa, Italy, September 2007. 3 pages and 4

Peri-Vesical Fat Interposition Flap Reinforcement in High Vesico-Vaginal Fistulas
Background and Aim: The urinary bladder becomes small, contracted and is associated with excess pelvic fat in long standing cases of vesico-vaginal fistulas (VVFs). The aim of this new technique was to use this excess pelvic fat for harvesting an interposition flap. Materials and Methods: An interposition flap of peri-vesical fat was raised from the anterior, superior and posterior surfaces of the urinary bladder and was interposed between the right angle closed vaginal vault and the urinary bladder to strengthen the repair. This technique was used in two patients of VVFs. Results: Both the patients had successful outcome and were able to retain sufficient quantity of urine at 3 months follow-up. Conclusions: Peri-vesical fat flap proved an effective
interposition flap in the repairs of VVFs in selected cases.

Distances from the Correlation between Galaxy Luminosities and Rotation Rates
A large luminosity--linewidth template sample is now available, improved
absorption corrections have been derived, and there are a statistically
significant number of galaxies with well determined distances to supply the
zero point. A revised estimate of the Hubble Constant is H_0=77 +-4 km/s/Mpc
where the error is the 95% probability statistical error. Systematic
uncertainties are potentially twice as large.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figures. Invited chapter for the book `Post-Hipparcos

Longitudinal response function of 4He with a realistic force
The longitudinal response function of 4He is calculated with the Argonne V18
potential. The comparison with experiment suggests the need of a three-body
force. When adding the Urbana IX three-body potential in the calculation of the
lower longitudinal multipoles, the total strength is suppressed in the
quasi-elastic peak, towards the trend of the experimental data.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures, proceedings of the 20th European Conference on
