    Thermodynamics of rotating black branes in (n+1)(n+1)-dimensional Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity

    We construct a new class of charged rotating solutions of (n+1)(n+1)-dimensional Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity with cylindrical or toroidal horizons in the presence of cosmological constant and investigate their properties. These solutions are asymptotically (anti)-de Sitter and reduce to the solutions of Einstein-Maxwell gravity as the Born-Infeld parameters goes to infinity. We find that these solutions can represent black branes, with inner and outer event horizons, an extreme black brane or a naked singularity provided the parameters of the solutions are chosen suitably. We compute temperature, mass, angular momentum, entropy, charge and electric potential of the black brane solutions. We obtain a Smarr-type formula and show that these quantities satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. We also perform a stability analysis by computing the heat capacity and the determinant of Hessian matrix of mass with respect to its thermodynamic variables in both the canonical and the grand-canonical ensembles, and show that the system is thermally stable in the whole phase space.Comment: 12 pages, one figur

    Entry into primary care-based buprenorphine treatment is associated with identification and treatment of other chronic medical problems

    BACKGROUND: Buprenorphine is an effective treatment for opioid dependence that can be provided in a primary care setting. Offering this treatment may also facilitate the identification and treatment of other chronic medical conditions. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 168 patients who presented to a primary care clinic for treatment of opioid dependence and who received a prescription for sublingual buprenorphine within a month of their initial visit. RESULTS: Of the 168 new patients, 122 (73%) did not report having an established primary care provider at the time of the initial visit. One hundred and twenty-five patients (74%) reported at least one established chronic condition at the initial visit. Of the 215 established diagnoses documented on the initial visit, 146 (68%) were not being actively treated; treatment was initiated for 70 (48%) of these within one year. At least one new chronic medical condition was identified in 47 patients (28%) during the first four months of their care. Treatment was initiated for 39 of the 54 new diagnoses (72%) within the first year. CONCLUSIONS: Offering treatment for opioid dependence with buprenorphine in a primary care practice is associated with the identification and treatment of other chronic medical conditions

    Monorail/Foxa2 regulates floorplate differentiation and specification of oligodendrocytes, serotonergic raphe neurones and cranial motoneurones

    In this study, we elucidate the roles of the winged-helix transcription factor Foxa2 in ventral CNS development in zebrafish. Through cloning of monorail (mol), which we find encodes the transcription factor Foxa2, and phenotypic analysis of mol(-/-) embryos, we show that floorplate is induced in the absence of Foxa2 function but fails to further differentiate. In mol(-/-) mutants, expression of Foxa and Hh family genes is not maintained in floorplate cells and lateral expansion of the floorplate fails to occur. Our results suggest that this is due to defects both in the regulation of Hh activity in medial floorplate cells as well as cell-autonomous requirements for Foxa2 in the prospective laterally positioned floorplate cells themselves. Foxa2 is also required for induction and/or patterning of several distinct cell types in the ventral CNS. Serotonergic neurones of the raphe nucleus and the trochlear motor nucleus are absent in mol(-/-) embryos, and oculomotor and facial motoneurones ectopically occupy ventral CNS midline positions in the midbrain and hindbrain. There is also a severe reduction of prospective oligodendrocytes in the midbrain and hindbrain. Finally, in the absence of Foxa2, at least two likely Hh pathway target genes are ectopically expressed in more dorsal regions of the midbrain and hindbrain ventricular neuroepithelium, raising the possibility that Foxa2 activity may normally be required to limit the range of action of secreted Hh proteins

    Tunneling in Λ\Lambda Decaying Cosmologies and the Cosmological Constant Problem

    The tunneling rate, with exact prefactor, is calculated to first order in \hbar for an empty closed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universe with decaying cosmological term ΛRm\Lambda \sim R^{-m} (RR is the scale factor and mm is a parameter 0m20\leq m \leq 2). This model is equivalent to a cosmology with the equation of state pχ=(m/31)ρχp_{\chi}=(m/3 -1)\rho_{\chi}. The calculations are performed by applying the dilute-instanton approximation on the corresponding Duru-Kleinert path integral. It is shown that the highest tunneling rate occurs for m=2m=2 corresponding to the cosmic string matter universe. The obtained most probable cosmological term, like one obtained by Strominger, accounts for a possible solution to the cosmological constant problem.Comment: 21 pages, REVTEX, The section 3 is considerably completed including some physical mechanisms supporting the time variation of the cosmological constant, added references for the section 3.     Background no more: Action recognition across domains by causal interventions

    We aim to recognize actions under an appearance distribution shift between a source training domain and a target test domain. To enable such video domain generalization, our key idea is to intervene on the action to remove the confounding effect of the domain background on the class label using causal inference. Towards this, we propose to learn a causally debiased model on a source domain that intervenes on the action through three possible -operators, which separate the action and background. To better align the source and target distributions, we also introduce a test-time action intervention. Experiments on two challenging video domain generalization benchmarks reveal that causal inference is a promising tool for action recognition as it already achieves state-of-the-art results on Kinetics2Mimetics, the benchmark with the largest domain shift

    Ricci flat rotating black branes with a conformally invariant Maxwell source

    We consider Einstein gravity coupled to an U(1)U(1) gauge field for which the density is given by a power of the Maxwell Lagrangian. In dd-dimensions the action of Maxwell field is shown to enjoy the conformal invariance if the power is chosen as d/4d/4. We present a class of charge rotating solutions in Einstein-conformally invariant Maxwell gravity in the presence of a cosmological constant. These solutions may be interpreted as black brane solutions with inner and outer event horizons or an extreme black brane depending on the value of the mass parameter. Since we are considering power of the Maxwell density, the black brane solutions exist only for dimensions which are multiples of four. We compute conserved and thermodynamics quantities of the black brane solutions and show that the expression of the electric field does not depend on the dimension. Also, we obtain a Smarr-type formula and show that these conserved and thermodynamic quantities of black branes satisfy the first law of thermodynamics. Finally, we study the phase behavior of the rotating black branes and show that there is no Hawking--Page phase transition in spite of conformally invariant Maxwell field.Comment: 13 pages, one figur
