    The issuance of series-1996 $100 Federal Reserve notes: goals, strategy, and likely results.

    In March 1996, the Federal Reserve began issuing series-1996 100FederalReservenotes.CulminatingacooperativeeffortbytheU.S.DepartmentoftheTreasuryandtheFederalReserveSystemthatdatedfromthe1980s,theseries−1996notewasthefirstmajordesignchangeinU.S.currencyinsixty−sixyears.ThenewnotewasdevelopedtoprovidebetterprotectionforusersofU.S.currencyagainstthegrowingthreatofcounterfeiting,especiallythatposedbyincreasinglyaffordableandcapablecolorscanningandprintingsystems.ThisarticlediscussestheFederalReserveâ€Čsstrategyforissuingnewlydesigned100 Federal Reserve notes. Culminating a cooperative effort by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve System that dated from the 1980s, the series-1996 note was the first major design change in U.S. currency in sixty-six years. The new note was developed to provide better protection for users of U.S. currency against the growing threat of counterfeiting, especially that posed by increasingly affordable and capable color scanning and printing systems. This article discusses the Federal Reserve's strategy for issuing newly designed 100 notes and says that it appears likely to achieve its objectives: a replacement of pre-series-1996 $100 notes that is timely in relation to the developing threat of counterfeiting, with a minimum impact on holders and users of those notes throughout the world.Money

    Integrity and its counterfeits: Shakespeare’s Henriad

    Abstract. The article will briefly and critically review philosophical views on integrity, focusing on integration, identity, standing up for moral principles and ethical decision making practice. It will explore integrity as Aristotle’s virtue of truthfulness, noting how this leads to engagement with the self and the social network. This demands the practice of responsibility, involving: critical agency (developing authorship of the ethical narrative), accountability (involving plural and mutual dialogue), and creative (positive) responsibility (involving both narrative and dialogue around action) In light of this dynamic and social view of integrity the second part the article explores counterfeit integrity. It distinguishes counterfeit integrity based in unexamined ideology and identity from counterfeit integrity based in intentional deception of others about beliefs, values and motives. Each of these are illustrated by figures from Shakespeare’s Henriad, and parallel cases in business and sport

    On determination of electronic-vibro-rotational term values of diatomic molecules from measured wavenumbers

    A method is proposed for determining rovibronic term values of diatomics from experimental data on the wavenumbers of electronic-vibro-rotational spectral lines. In contrast to existing techniques, the new one is based on the Rydberg-Ritz principle only. It is shown that a link between a set of rovibronic term values and a set of wavenumbers of observed rovibronic spectral lines appears when three and more different electronic-vibrational states are pairwise-connected by radiative transitions. The method differs from known techniques in several aspects, namely, it: 1) doesn't need any assumptions concerning an internal structure of a molecule; 2) doesn't involve any intermediate parameters (as molecular constants in traditional techniques); 3) gives an opportunity to use in one-stage optimization procedure all available experimental data obtained for various band systems, by various authors, and in various works; 4) provides in an interactive mode the opportunity to select the experimental values, eliminating rough errors, to revise wrong identifications of spectral lines and to compare various sets of experimental data for mutual consistency; 5) allows to obtain not only an optimal set of rovibronic term values, but also the error bars depending on quantity and quality of existing experimental data. Necessary precondition for use of this method is a preliminary identification of electronic-vibro-rotational lines to certain electronic-vibro-rotational radiative transitions.     Esophageal strictures following nasogastric intubation

    Esophageal stricture is not reported to be a common complication of nasogastric intubation. Two patients who had a Levin tube inserted in the stomach for nutrition during a prolonged coma, and finally presented with a severe esophageal stricture were observed and treated. The clinical history of the patients suggests that the pathogenesis of this lesion is probably multifactorial, secondary to induced gastroesophageal reflux, impaired esophageal clearance, high gastric acid output, and use of steroids. Jejunostomy feeding, rather than nasogastric feeding, is probably a better means to provide nutritional support in comatose patients, thus averting the risk of such a serious complication. Esophageal replacement with left colon interposition appears the treatment of choice for these severe esophageal strictures
