    Reading “Women Don’t Riot” After the Riot: Creating a University-Prison Collaboration

    We examine a case study of a collaboration between a University and a Women’s Correctional Institution: an Inside Out college course that brings together incarcerated and traditional students. We analyze the creation of a class in the aftermath of a riot in the region and in the ongoing context of internal and external reforms. We provide specific examples of mistakes, lessons learned, and the impact of our pedagogical values and techniques, and provide links to our class materials. We emphasize communication between the institutions, from the students to instructors, among the instructors, and from instructors to students. In the classroom, we exploit our expertise and our non-expertise as learners together to break down perceived barriers. We also emphasize the value of self-care and recognition of all students as agentic. We conclude with a call for future research that attends to student agency and that examines who benefits from prison-university partnerships

    Rejuvenation and Memory in model Spin Glasses in 3 and 4 dimensions

    We numerically study aging for the Edwards-Anderson Model in 3 and 4 dimensions using different temperature-change protocols. In D=3, time scales a thousand times larger than in previous work are reached with the SUE machine. Deviations from cumulative aging are observed in the non monotonic time behavior of the coherence length. Memory and rejuvenation effects are found in a temperature-cycle protocol, revealed by vanishing effective waiting times. Similar effects are reported for the D=3$site-diluted ferromagnetic Ising model (without chaos). However, rejuvenation is reduced if off-equilibrium corrections to the fluctuation-dissipation theorem are considered. Memory and rejuvenation are quantitatively describable in terms of the growth regime of the spin-glass coherence length.Comment: Extended protocols. Accepted in Phys. Rev. B. 10 postscript figure

    Effective Geometry

    We introduce the concept of effective geometry by studying several systems in which it arises naturally. As an example of the power and conciseness of the method, it is shown that a flowing dielectric medium with a linear response to an external electric field can be used to generate an analog geometry that has many of the formal properties of a \Sch black hole for light rays, in spite of birefringence. The surface gravity of this analog black hole has a contribution that depends only on the dielectric properties of the fluid (in addition to the usual term dependent on the acceleration). KGaA.The remarkable activity displayed by copper(I)–phosphinite complexes of general formula [CuBr(L)] in two challenging cycloadditions is reported: a) the one-pot azidonation/cycloaddition of boronic acids, NaN3, and terminal alkynes; b) the cycloaddition of azides and iodoalkynes. These air-stable catalysts led to very good results in both cases and the expected triazoles could be isolated in pure form under ‘Click-suitable’ conditions
