Dot-Elisa para avaliação da parede do cisto hidático, protoscoleces e antĂgenos do fluido do cisto hidático no sorodiagnĂłstico da equinococose cĂstica
The aim of the present study is to evaluate cyst wall and protoscolex as an alternate source of antigen in serodiagnosis of cystic echinococcosis (CE). A total of 90 blood samples, 30 each of confirmed CE cases, disease controls and healthy controls were collected. Dot-ELISA using cyst wall, protoscolex and cyst fluid were used to demonstrate anti-hydatid antibodies. The sensitivity of Dot-ELISA using cyst wall, protoscolex and cyst fluid was 96.66%, 86.66% and 93.33% respectively and the specificity of the assay was 70% for Dot-ELISA using cyst fluid, protoscolex and cyst wall antigens. Results of the present study show that cyst wall and protoscolex can also be an useful source of antigen in detection of hydatid antibodies in the serodiagnosis of CE.O propĂłsito do presente trabalho Ă© avaliar a parede cĂstica e protoscolex como fontes alternativas de antĂgeno no sorodiagnĂłstico de equinococose cĂstica (CE).
Charge and critical density of strange quark matter
The electric charge of strange quark matter is of vital importance to
experiments. A recent investigation shows that strangelets are most likely
highly negatively charged, rather than slightly positively charged as
previously believed. Our present study indicates that negative charges can
indeed lower the critical density, and thus be favorable to the experimental
searches in heavy ion collisions. However, too much negative charges can make
it impossible to maintain flavor equilibrium.Comment: 4 pages, LATeX with REVTeX style, one PS figure. To be published in

Anti-Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) activity of biogenic gold and silver nanoparticles using seaweed Sargassum wightii
1252-1257Biogenic gold (Au) and silver (Ag) nanoparticles were synthesized using seaweed Sargassum wightii (Sw) and their antiviral activity against Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV-1 and HSV-2) was evaluated. Efficacy of Sw-Au and Sw-Ag nanoparticles against HSV was estimated by the reduction of cytopathic effect (CPE) caused by HSV, which was observed in a dose-dependent manner. Sw-Au nanoparticles reduced 70% CPE of HSV-1 and HSV-2 at 10 μL and 25 μL, respectively, whereas 2.5 μL Sw-Ag nanoparticles effectively reduced 70% CPE of HSV-1 and HSV-2. Cytotoxicity was estimated in Vero cells by MTT assay. Sw-Au nanoparticles were significantly non-toxic in all the concentrations tested, whereas Sw-Ag nanoparticles were found to be toxic in higher concentrations. Sw-Au nanoparticles showed cell viability of 93.12-85.18 % in the range of 2.5-25 µL, and Sw-Ag nanoparticles showed cell viability of 97.21-21.91% in the range of 1-10 μL. Sw-Au and Sw-Ag nanoparticles effectively reduce the CPE caused by both HSV-1 and HSV-2 in Vero cells and can be used to treat HSV infections
Mass formulas and thermodynamic treatment in the mass-density-dependent model of strange quark matter
The previous treatments for strange quark matter in the quark
mass-density-dependent model have unreasonable vacuum limits. We provide a
method to obtain the quark mass parametrizations and give a self-consistent
thermodynamic treatment which includes the MIT bag model as an extreme. In this
treatment, strange quark matter in bulk still has the possibility of absolute
stability. However, the lower density behavior of the sound velocity is
opposite to previous findings.Comment: Formatted in REVTeX 3.1, 5 pages, 3 figures, to appear in PRC6
Mutation detection analysis of a region of 16S-like ribosomal RNA gene of Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dispar and Entamoeba moshkovskii
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The level of intra-species genetic variation in <it>Entamoeba histolytica, Entamoeba dispar </it>and <it>Entamoeba moshkovskii </it>populations in a localized geographic area, like Puducherry, India, remains unknown.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In the present study the existence of genetic variation in the nested multiplex polymerase chain reaction (NM-PCR) amplified region of the 16S-like ribosomal RNA genes of <it>E. histolytica, E. dispar </it>and <it>E. moshkovskii </it>was investigated by riboprinting and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that 70 stool specimens were positive for <it>E. histolytica</it>, 171 stool specimens were positive for <it>E. dispar</it>, and 37 stool specimens were positive for <it>E. moshkovskii </it>by NM-PCR. Ninety liver abscess pus specimens, 21 urine specimens, and 8 saliva specimens were positive for <it>E. histolytica </it>by NM-PCR. Riboprinting analysis detected a mutation in the PCR product of only one <it>E. histolytica </it>isolate from a stool specimen. However, SSCP analysis detected mutations in the PCR products of five <it>E. histolytica </it>isolates and three <it>E. moshkovskii </it>isolates from stool specimens, and one <it>E. histolytica </it>isolate from a saliva specimen. The mutations detected by riboprinting and SSCP analysis were confirmed by sequencing. All the nucleotide sequences showing mutations in this study have already been deposited into the NCBI GenBank database under accession numbers [GenBank: <ext-link ext-link-type="gen" ext-link-id="EF682200">EF682200</ext-link> to GenBank: <ext-link ext-link-type="gen" ext-link-id="EF682208">EF682208</ext-link>].</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The present study has revealed the subsistence of mutations in the ribosomal RNA genes of <it>E. histolytica </it>and <it>E. moshkovskii</it>, which points towards the existence of intra-species genetic variation in <it>E. histolytica </it>and <it>E. moshkovskii </it>isolates infecting humans.</p
