    Incorporation of biosolids in fired clay bricks

    In Australia, thousands of tonnes of biosolids are produced and millions of dollars expended for their management annually. Biosolids are derived from wastewater sludge which is the major solid component collected from the wastewater treatment process. This study investigated the incorporation of biosolids into fired clay bricks. Geotechnical characteristics of three biosolids samples produced from Eastern Wastewater Treatment Plant (ETP) in Melbourne were investigated to assess their suitability as a partial replacement material for the clay in fired-clay bricks. Results of classification tests including liquid limit, plastic limit and sieve analysis indicated that the three biosolids samples are silty clayey sand with low to high plasticity. Linear shrinkage of biosolids samples varied from 10% to 15% and organic content from 6% to 14%. Control clay bricks with 0% biosolids and clay-biosolids bricks with 25% by weight biosolids were made and properties including compressive strength, shrinkage, density, initial rate of absorption (IRA), water absorption, thermal conductivity and other properties were determined. The overall results of this preliminary study are promising. Some of the results of this stage of this investigation are presented and discussed in this paper

    Certainly Unsupervisable States

    This paper proposes an abstraction method for compositional synthesis. Synthesis is a method to automatically compute a control program or supervisor that restricts the behaviour of a given system to ensure safety and liveness. Compositional synthesis uses repeated abstraction and simplification to combat the state-space explosion problem for large systems. The abstraction method proposed in this paper finds and removes the so-called certainly unsupervisable states. By removing these states at an early stage, the final state space can be reduced substantially. The paper describes an algorithm with cubic time complexity to compute the largest possible set of removable states. A practical example demonstrates the feasibility of the method to solve real-world problems

    Supervisory Control Theory in System Safety Analysis

    Development of safety critical systems requires a risk management strategy to identify and analyse hazards, and apply necessary actions to eliminate or control them as malfunctions could be catastrophic. Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) is one of the most widely used methods for safety analysis in industrial use. However, the standard FTA is manual, informal, and limited to static analysis of systems. In this paper, we present preliminary results from a model-based approach to address these limitations using Supervisory Control Theory. Taking an example from the Fault Tree Handbook, we present a systematic approach to incrementally obtain formal models from a fault tree and verify them in the tool Supremica. We present a method to calculate minimal cut sets using our approach. These compositional techniques could potentially be very beneficial in the safety analysis of highly complex safety critical systems, where several components interact to solve different tasks

    Integrated Strategy toward Self-Powering and Selectivity Tuning of Semiconductor Gas Sensors

    Inorganic conductometric gas sensors struggle to overcome limitations in high power consumption and poor selectivi-ty. Herein, recent advances in developing self-powered gas sensors with tunable selectivity are introduced. Alternative general approaches for powering gas sensors were realized via proper integration of complementary functionalities (namely; powering and sensing) in a singular heterostructure. These solar light driven gas sensors operating at room temperature without applying any additional external powering sources are comparatively discussed. The TYPE-1 gas sensor based on integration of pure inorganic interfaces (e.g. CdS/n-ZnO/p-Si) is capable of delivering a self-sustained sensing response, while it shows a non-selective interaction towards oxidizing and reducing gases. The structural and the optical merits of TYPE-1 sensor are investigated giving more insights into the role of light activation on the modu-lation of the self-powered sensing response. In the TYPE-2 sensor, the selectivity of inorganic materials is tailored through surface functionalization with self-assembled organic monolayers (SAMs). Such hybrid interfaces (e.g. SAMs/ZnO/p-Si) have specific surface interactions with target gases compared to the non-specific oxidation-reduction interactions governing the sensing mechanism of simple inorganic sensors. The theoretical modeling using density functional theory (DFT) has been used to simulate the sensing behavior of inorganic/organic/gas interfaces, revealing that the alignment of organic/gas frontier molecular orbitals with respect to the inorganic Fermi level is the key factor for tuning selectivity.     A Proposal for Recycling the World's Unused Stockpiles of Treated Wastewater Sludge (Biosolids) in Fired-Clay Bricks

    Millions of tonnes of leftover biosolids are increasingly stockpiled every year around the globe. Biosolids are a product of the wastewater sludge treatment process. Stockpiles necessitate the use of large areas of increasingly valuable land. Biosolids have many beneficial uses and are currently utilised in agricultural and land rehabilitation applications. However, it is estimated that 30% of biosolids are unused and stockpiled. A second and seemingly unrelated environmental issue is the massive excavation of virgin soil for brick production. The annual production of 1500 billion bricks globally requires over 3.13 billion cubic metres of clay soil-equivalent to over 1000 soccer fields dug 440 m deep or to a depth greater than three times the height of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This paper investigates and proposes a practical solution for the utilisation of the world's excess biosolids in fired-clay bricks. The physical, chemical and mechanical properties of fired-clay bricks incorporating 25%, 20%, 15% and 10% biosolids have been tested. Bricks were produced from three different biosolids samples collected at Melbourne's Eastern Treatment Plant (ETP 22) and the Western Treatment Plant (WTP 10 & WTP 17-29). Compressive strength testing indicated results ranging between 35.5 MPa and 12.04 MPa for the biosolids-amended bricks. Leachate analysis was conducted on the bricks before and after firing, and the results demonstrate that between 43 and 99% of the heavy metals tested were immobilised inside the fired bricks compared to the heavy metals tested in the raw mixture. All leachate concentrations were found to be insignificant for the biosolids-incorporated bricks tested in this study. Biosolids can have significantly different chemical characteristics depending on the origin of the wastewater and the treatment procedure.     Verification of Decision Making Software in an Autonomous Vehicle: An Industrial Case Study

    Correctness of autonomous driving systems is crucial as\ua0incorrect behaviour may have catastrophic consequences. Many different\ua0hardware and software components (e.g. sensing, decision making, actuation,\ua0and control) interact to solve the autonomous driving task, leading to a level of complexity that brings new challenges for the formal verification\ua0community. Though formal verification has been used to prove\ua0correctness of software, there are significant challenges in transferring\ua0such techniques to an agile software development process and to ensure\ua0widespread industrial adoption. In the light of these challenges, the identification\ua0of appropriate formalisms, and consequently the right verification\ua0tools, has significant impact on addressing them. In this paper, we\ua0evaluate the application of different formal techniques from supervisory\ua0control theory, model checking, and deductive verification to verify existing\ua0decision and control software (in development) for an autonomous\ua0vehicle. We discuss how the verification objective differs with respect tothe choice of formalism and the level of formality that can be applied.\ua0Insights from the case study show a need for multiple formal methods to\ua0prove correctness, the difficulty to capture the right level of abstraction\ua0to model and specify the formal properties for the verification objectives
