Intellectual Property Appropriation Strategy and its Impact on Innovation Performance
How should intellectual property (IP) be protected and appropriated to gain value for the firm? This study aims to answer this question by examining the impact of the key determinants of IP appropriability, namely organizational resources, IP management practices and organizational learning culture, on innovation performance. The study uses quantitative survey data obtained from the Australian biotechnology, pharmaceutical and ICT industries in order to test several hypotheses. Our results show that exploitation and protection of IP within an organisational learning culture have a significant effect on the firm's innovation performance. The implication for managers is that IP appropriation is likely to be most successful when trade secrets and profits from innovation are applied simultaneously within an organizational learning culture
The impact of operations and maintenance practices on power plant performance
Purpose β The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of operations and maintenance (O&M) practices, individually and collectively, on power plant performance. Design/methodology/approach β Data were collected from more than 100 power plants in Australia and Malaysia. The reliability and validity (content, construct, and criterion) of the practice and performance measures were evaluated. Findings β Committed leadership and maintenance-oriented practices as part of a total productive maintenance (TPM) philosophy were found to be the main differentiators between high and low performing plants. Research limitations/implications β The research is cross-sectional in nature, therefore, it does not permit us to account for the lag between implementation and performance. Second, the performance measures are subjective and may be subject to response bias. Practical implications β The implication of the research findings for plant managers is that they need to allocate more βsofterβ resources to the O&M function if they expect high plant availability. Social implications β Apart from capacity and fuel cost, operating costs are an important source of differentiation for power plants. The implication is that reduction in operating costs is directly related to the reduction of consumer power bills. Originality/value β The reader will learn from this paper that committed leadership and maintenance-oriented practices have greater explanatory power in the regression models than employee involvement, customer focus, strategic planning, and knowledge management. This knowledge is important because it emphasises that in addition to quality management practices, which are focussed on the development of the people aspects of the organization, the plant equipment and physical assets should also be given equal emphasis, in order to improve operational performance of power plants
Implementation of Video Compression Standards in Digital Television
In this paper, a video compression standard used in digital television systems is discussed. Basic concepts of video compression and principles of lossy and lossless compression are given. Techniques of video compression (intraframe and interframe compression), the type of frames and principles of the bit rate compression are discussed. Characteristics of standard-definition television (SDTV), high-definition television (HDTV) and ultra-high-definition television (UHDTV) are given. The principles of the MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) compression standards are analyzed. Overview of basic standards of video compression and the impact of compression on the quality of TV images and the number of TV channels in the multiplexes of terrestrial and satellite digital TV transmission are shown. This work is divided into six sections

The use of GNSS zenith total delays in operational AROME/Hungary 3D-Var over a central European domain
The delay of satellite signals broadcasted by Global Navigation Satellite
System (GNSS) provides unique atmospheric observations which endorse
numerical weather prediction from global to limited-area models. Due to the
possibility of its frequent and near-real-time estimation, the zenith total
delays (ZTDs) are valuable information for any state-of-the-art data
assimilation system. This article introduces the data assimilation of ZTDs in
a Hungarian numerical weather prediction system, which was carried out by taking
into account observations from central European GNSS analysis and processing
centres. The importance of ZTD observations is described and shown by a
diagnostic tool in the 3-hourly updated 3D-Var assimilation
scheme. Furthermore, observing system experiments are done to evaluate the
impact of GNSS ZTDs on mesoscale limited-area forecasts. The results of the
use of GNSS ZTDs showed a clear added value to improve screen-level
temperature and humidity forecasts when the bias is accurately estimated and
corrected in the data assimilation scheme. The importance of variational, i.e.
adaptive bias correction, is highlighted by verification scores compared to
static bias correction. Moreover, this paper reviews the quality control of
GNSS ground-based stations inside the central European domain, the
calculation of optimal thinning distance and the preparation of the two
above-mentioned bias correction methods. Finally, conclusions are drawn on
different settings of the forecast and analysis experiments with a brief
future outlook.</p

ΡΠ΅Π΄ΠΈΡΠ΅ΡΠ°...Many studies have dealt with the investigation of the impact of alcoholic beverages on human health, and a general conclusion is that moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages (beer, wine and spirits) may have a protective effects on the occurrence of cardiovascular disease, the most common causes of death in modern society. At the end of the XX century, systematic investigations of health promotion effects of wine were began. The obtained results showed that positive activity of wine directly depends on the content and bioavailability of phenolic compounds. Researches, involving more than 3,700 published papers, indicate that beer is also a significant source of phenolic and other bioactive compounds with prophylactic action and positive effects on human health. The phenolic compounds in beer and wine are quantitatively and qualitatively different, but red wines contain a much higher concentration of these compounds compared with beer.
The main objective of this dissertation was to investigate the possibility of unite of positive effects of these two beverages through the contribution to the development and optimization of technological production process of special type of beer from wort and grape mash. The basic hypotesis was that the resulting grape beers will have higher biological value and increased functionality compared to commercial lager beer, but also pleasant sensory characteristics and an acceptable price in the market.
In the experimental production of special grape beers three grape varieties were used: prokupac, cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir. The following parameters of production were examined: the optimal proportion of grapes in the fermentation medium, the possibility of using different yeast strains in the production, dynamic of fermentations, the impact of autochthonous grape microflora on the products quality, and dynamics of phenolic compounds extraction. Twelve different grape beers (four beers from each grape variety) and two control beers without the addition of grape were produced. Also, wines from each grape variety were produced according to the procedure for the production of red wines..
Batch fermentation of black tea by kombucha: A contribution to scale-up
Local domestic Kombucha was used in fermentation of 1.5 g L-1 of black tea (Indian tea, " Vitamin ", HorgoΕ‘, Serbia and Montenegro), sweetened with approximately 70 g L'1 of sucrose. Inoculation was performed either with 10% or 15% (v/v) of fermentation broth from previous process. The fermentation was conducted in geometrically similar vessels with 0.4 L, 0.8 L, 4 L and 8 L of substrate, at 22Β±1 Β°C for 28 days. The samples were analyzed after 3, 4 5, 6, 7, 10, 14 and 28 days, so that their pH values, content of total acids sucrose, glucose and fructose contents, as well as contents of ethanol and vitamin C were determined. Based on the experiment design, the response surface for the product pH, as a function of time, beverage volume and inoculum concentration, was defined in the form of a second-order polynomial. From the obtained response surface, a formula for scaling-up of the process was derived
