Helicobacter pylori is one of the most common bacterial pathogens, infecting about 50% of the world population. The presence of a pathogenicity island (PAl) in H. pylori has been associated with gastric disease. We present evidence that the H. pylori protein encoded by the cytotoxin- associated gene A (cagA) is translocated and phosphorylated in infected epithelial cells. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) of proteins isolated from infected AGS cells revealed H. pylori strain-specific and time- dependent tyrosine phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of several 125-135 kDa and 75-80 kDa proteins. Immunoblotting studies, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), cell fractionation and confocal microscopy demonstrated that one of the 125-135 kDa proteins represents the H. pylori CagA protein, which is translocated into the host cell membrane and the cytoplasm. Translocation of CagA was dependent on functional cagA gene and virulence (vir) genes of a type IV secretion apparatus composed of virB4, virB7, virB10, virB11 and virD4 encoded in the cag PAl of H. pylori. Our findings support the view that H. pylori actively translocates virulence determinants, including CagA, which could be involved in the development of a variety of gastric disease.SCOPUS: ar.jFLWINinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishe
Cross section and analyzing power of pol{p}p -> pn pi+ near threshold
The cross section and analyzing power of the pol{p}p -> pn pi+ reaction near
threshold are estimated in terms of data obtained from the pol{p}p -> d pi+ and
pp -> pp pi0 reactions. A simple final state interaction theory is developed
which depends weakly upon the form of the pion-production operator and includes
some Coulomb corrections. Within the uncertainties of the model and the input
data, the approach reproduces well the measured energy dependence of the total
cross section and the proton analyzing power at a fixed pion c.m. angle of
90deg, from threshold to T_p = 330 MeV. The variation of the differential cross
section with pion angle is also very encouraging.Comment: 20 pages, Latex including 4 eps figure
Two-body Pion Absorption on at Threshold
It is shown that a satisfactory explanation of the ratio of the rates of the
reactions and for stopped pions is obtained
once the effect of the short range two-nucleon components of the axial charge
operator for the nuclear system is taken into account. By employing realistic
models for the nucleon-nucleon interaction in the construction of these
components of the axial charge operator, the predicted ratios agree with the
empirical value to within 10-20\%.Comment: 19, UHPHYDOR-94-
Neutral and Cationic Rare Earth Metal Alkyl and Benzyl Compounds with the 1,4,6-Trimethyl-6-pyrrolidin-1-yl-1,4-diazepane Ligand and Their Performance in the Catalytic Hydroamination/Cyclization of Aminoalkenes
A new neutral tridentate 1,4,6-trimethyl-6-pyrrolidin-1-yl-1,4-diazepane (L) was prepared. Reacting L with trialkyls M(CH2SiMe3)3(THF)2 (M = Sc, Y) and tribenzyls M(CH2Ph)3(THF)3 (M = Sc, La) yielded trialkyl complexes (L)M(CH2SiMe3)3 (M = Sc, 1; M = Y, 2) and tribenzyl complexes (L)M(CH2Ph)3 (M = Sc, 3; M = La, 4). Complexes 1 and 2 can be converted to their corresponding ionic compounds [(L)M(CH2SiMe3)2(THF)][B(C6H5)4] (M = Sc, Y) by reaction with [PhNMe2H][B(C6H5)4] in THF. Complexes 3 and 4 can be converted to cationic species [(L)M(CH2Ph)2]+ by reaction with [PhNMe2H][B(C6F5)4] in C6D5Br in the absence of THF. The neutral complexes 1-4 and their cationic derivatives were studied as catalysts for the hydroamination/cyclization of 2,2-diphenylpent-4-en-1-amine and N-methylpent-4-en-1-amine reference substrates and compared with ligand-free Sc, Y, and La neutral and cationic catalysts. The most effective catalysts in the series were the cationic L-yttrium catalyst (for 2,2-diphenylpent-4-en-1-amine) and the cationic lanthanum systems (for N-methylpent-4-en-1-amine). For the La catalysts, evidence was obtained for release of L from the metal during catalysis.
Similar neural pathways link psychological stress and brain-age in health and multiple sclerosis
Clinical and neuroscientific studies suggest a link between psychological stress and reduced brain health in health and neurological disease but it is unclear whether mediating pathways are similar. Consequently, we applied an arterial-spin-labeling MRI stress task in 42 healthy persons and 56 with multiple sclerosis, and investigated regional neural stress responses, associations between functional connectivity of stress-responsive regions and the brain-age prediction error, a highly sensitive machine learning brain health biomarker, and regional brain-age constituents in both groups. Stress responsivity did not differ between groups. Although elevated brain-age prediction errors indicated worse brain health in patients, anterior insula–occipital cortex (healthy persons: occipital pole; patients: fusiform gyrus) functional connectivity correlated with brain-age prediction errors in both groups. Finally, also gray matter contributed similarly to regional brain-age across groups. These findings might suggest a common stress–brain health pathway whose impact is amplified in multiple sclerosis by disease-specific vulnerability factors
Role of heavy-meson exchange in pion production near threshold
Recent calculations of -wave pion production have severely underestimated
the accurately known \ total cross section near
threshold. In these calculations, only the single-nucleon axial-charge operator
is considered. We have calculated, in addition to the one-body term, the
two-body contributions to this reaction that arise from the exchange of mesons.
We find that the inclusion of the scalar -meson exchange current (and
lesser contributions from other mesons) increases the cross section by about a
factor of five, and leads to excellent agreement with the data. The results are
neither very sensitive to changes in the distorting potential that generates
the wave function, nor to different choices for the meson-nucleon form
factors. We argue that \ data provide direct
experimental evidence for meson-exchange contributions to the axial current.Comment: 28 Pages, IU-NTC #93-0
Production of the 1S0 diproton in the pp -> pp pi0 reaction at 0.8 GeV
The pp -> pp pi0 differential cross section has been measured with the ANKE
spectrometer at COSY-Juelich for pion cms angles between 0 and 15.4 degrees at
a proton beam energy of 0.8 GeV. The selection of diproton pairs with an
excitation energy E_{pp} < 3 MeV ensures that the final pp system is dominantly
in the spin-singlet 1S0 state. The kinematics are therefore very similar to
those of pp -> d pi+ but with different spin and isospin transitions. The
results will thus provide a crucial extra test of pion production models in
nucleon-nucleon collisions.
The cross sections, which are over two orders of magnitude smaller than those
of pp -> d pi+, show a forward dip, even stronger than that seen at lower
energies. This behaviour is well reproduced in a theoretical model that
includes P-wave Delta-N states.Comment: 10 pages, 5 eps figures, prepared using elsart.cl
Isoscalar off-shell effects in threshold pion production from pd collisions
We test the presence of pion-nucleon isoscalar off-shell effects in the
reaction around the threshold region. We find that these
effects significantly modify the production cross section and that they may
provide the missing strength needed to reproduce the data at threshold.Comment: 6 pages, REVTeX, twocolumn, including 3 figures (Postscript), uses

Production of mesons in proton-proton collisions
The cross section for the production of mesons in proton-proton
collisions has been measured in a previously unexplored region of incident
energies. Cross sections were extracted at 92 MeV and 173 MeV excess energy,
respectively. The angular distribution of the at =173 MeV is
strongly anisotropic, demonstrating the importance of partial waves beyond pure
s-wave production at this energy.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures submitted to Physics Letters B v2: figure 1
