    A sensitive study of real time storm surge forecast model to meteorological and hydrodynamic fields along the Sanin coast, Japan

    In the present study, the performance of the real time storm surge forecast model based on the neural network is examined by forecasting Typhoon Megi storm surge 2003 at Sakai, Japan in terms of a variety of the combinations of data obtained from Typhoons Songda 2004 and Maemi 2003. In the experiments, the data sets are trained with the meteorological data measured at five stations: the sea level pressure, the depression rate of the sea level pressure, the wind speed, the wind direction; the hydroulic data: the sea surface level and the storm surge at Sakai; the typhoon parameters: the typhoon position, the central pressure of the typhoon and the highest wind speed near the typhoon center. In addition, the forecast time spans of 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 12 and 24 hours are investigated for all cases of the data sets. From the results, It is found that the performance of the real time forecast models shows best when training the neural network with the data set of the storm surge, the sea level pressure, the depression rates of the sea level pressure, the wind speed and the typhoon position at Sakai

    Continuous Hydrothermal Synthesis of Metal Germanates (M₂GeO₄; M=Co, Mn, Zn) for High-Capacity Negative Electrodes in Li-Ion Batteries

    Nanosized metal germanates (M2GeO4; M = Co, Mn, Zn) are synthesized using a continuous hydrothermal flow synthesis process for the first time. The electrochemical properties of all samples as active materials for negative electrodes in Li‐ion half cells are explored. The galvanostatic and potentiodynamic testing is conducted in the potential range of 3.00–0.05 V versus Li/Li+. The results suggest that both alloying and conversion reactions associated with Ge contribute to the stored charge capacity; Zn2GeO4 shows a high specific capacity of 600 mAh g−1 (ten cycles at 0.1 A g−1) due to alloying and conversion reactions for both Ge and Zn. Mn2GeO4 is studied for the first time as a potential negative electrode material in a Li‐ion half cell; an excellent specific charge capacity of 510 mAh g−1 (10 cycles per 0.1 A g−1) is obtained with a significant contribution to charge arising from the conversion reaction of Mn to MnO upon delithiation. In contrast, Co2GeO4 only shows a specific capacity of 240 mAh g−1, after ten cycles at the same current rate, which suggests that cobalt has little or no benefit for enhancing stored charge in germanate

    Intelligent Air Pollution Sensors Calibration for Extreme Events and Drifts Monitoring

    Air quality low-cost sensors are affordable and can be deployed in massive scale in order to enable high-resolution spatio-temporal air pollution information. However, they often suffer from sensing accuracy, in particular when they are used for capturing extreme events. We propose an intelligent sensors calibration method that facilitates correcting low-cost sensors' measurements accurately and detecting the calibrators' drift. The proposed calibration method uses Bayesian framework to establish white-box and black-box calibrators. We evaluate the method in a controlled experiment under different types of smoking events. The calibration results show that the method accurately estimates the aerosol mass concentration during the smoking events. We show that black-box calibrators are more accurate than white-box calibrators. However, black-box calibrators may drift easily when a new smoking event occurs, while white-box calibrators remain robust. Therefore, we implement both of the calibrators in parallel to extract both calibrators' strengths and also enable drifting monitoring for calibration models. We also discuss that our method is implementable for other types of low-cost sensors suffered from sensing accuracy.Peer reviewe

    Atypical emotional anticipation in high-functioning autism

    "Background: Understanding and anticipating others’ mental or emotional states relies on the processing of social cues, such as dynamic facial expressions. Individuals with high-functioning autism (HFA) may process these cues differently from individuals with typical development (TD) and purportedly use a ‘mechanistic’ rather than a ‘mentalistic’ approach, involving rule- and contingency-based interpretations of the stimuli. The study primarily aimed at examining whether the judgments of facial expressions made by individuals with TD and HFA would be similarly affected by the immediately preceding dynamic perceptual history of that face. A second aim was to explore possible differences in the mechanisms underpinning the perceptual judgments in the two groups. Methods: Twenty-two adults with HFA and with TD, matched for age, gender and IQ, were tested in three experiments in which dynamic, ‘ecologically valid’ offsets of happy and angry facial expressions were presented. Participants evaluated the expression depicted in the last frame of the video clip by using a 5-point scale ranging from slightly angry via neutral to slightly happy. Specific experimental manipulations prior to the final facial expression of the video clip allowed examining contributions of bottom-up mechanisms (sequential contrast/ context effects and representational momentum) and a top-down mechanism (emotional anticipation) to distortions in the perception of the final expression. Results: In experiment 1, the two groups showed a very similar perceptual bias for the final expression of joy-to-neutral and anger-to-neutral videos (overshoot bias). In experiment 2, a change in the actor’s identity during the clip removed the bias in the TD group, but not in the HFA group. In experiment 3, neutral-to-joy/anger-to-neutral sequences generated an undershoot bias (opposite to the overshoot) in the TD group, whereas no bias was observed in the HFA group. Conclusions: We argue that in TD individuals the perceptual judgments of other’s facial expressions were underpinned by an automatic emotional anticipation mechanism. In contrast, HFA individuals were primarily influenced by visual features, most notably the contrast between the start and end expressions, or pattern extrapolation. We critically discuss the proposition that automatic emotional anticipation may be induced by motor simulation of the perceived dynamic facial expressions and discuss its implications for autism.

    HIV-1 Envelope Subregion Length Variation during Disease Progression

    The V3 loop of the HIV-1 Env protein is the primary determinant of viral coreceptor usage, whereas the V1V2 loop region is thought to influence coreceptor binding and participate in shielding of neutralization-sensitive regions of the Env glycoprotein gp120 from antibody responses. The functional properties and antigenicity of V1V2 are influenced by changes in amino acid sequence, sequence length and patterns of N-linked glycosylation. However, how these polymorphisms relate to HIV pathogenesis is not fully understood. We examined 5185 HIV-1 gp120 nucleotide sequence fragments and clinical data from 154 individuals (152 were infected with HIV-1 Subtype B). Sequences were aligned, translated, manually edited and separated into V1V2, C2, V3, C3, V4, C4 and V5 subregions. V1-V5 and subregion lengths were calculated, and potential N-linked glycosylation sites (PNLGS) counted. Loop lengths and PNLGS were examined as a function of time since infection, CD4 count, viral load, and calendar year in cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. V1V2 length and PNLGS increased significantly through chronic infection before declining in late-stage infection. In cross-sectional analyses, V1V2 length also increased by calendar year between 1984 and 2004 in subjects with early and mid-stage illness. Our observations suggest that there is little selection for loop length at the time of transmission; following infection, HIV-1 adapts to host immune responses through increased V1V2 length and/or addition of carbohydrate moieties at N-linked glycosylation sites. V1V2 shortening during early and late-stage infection may reflect ineffective host immunity. Transmission from donors with chronic illness may have caused the modest increase in V1V2 length observed during the course of the pandemic
