Effect of ACTH and CRH on Plasma Levels of Cortisol and Prostaglandin F(2α )Metabolite in Cycling Gilts and Castrated Boars
The present study was designed to evaluate the effects of synthetic ACTH (1â24, tetracosactid) and porcine CRH on the plasma levels of cortisol and PGF(2α )metabolite in cycling gilts (n = 3) and castrated boars (n = 3). The experiments were designed as crossover studies for each gender separately. Each animal received, during three consecutive days; 1) ACTH (Synacthen(Âź )Depot) at a dose of 10 ÎŒg/kg body weight in 5 ml physiological saline, 2) porcine CRH at a dose 0.6 ÎŒg/kg body weight in 5 ml physiological saline or 3) physiological saline (5 ml). The test substances were administered via an indwelling jugular cannula in randomized order according to a Latin square. The administration of ACTH to cycling gilts resulted in concomitant elevations of cortisol and PGF(2α )metabolite with peak levels reached at 70.0 ± 10.0 and 33.3 ± 6.7 min, respectively. Similarly, the administration of ACTH to castrated boars resulted in concomitant elevation of cortisol and PGF(2α )metabolite with peak levels reached at 60.0 ± 0.0 and 20.0 ± 0.0 min, respectively. Cortisol peaked at 20 min after administration of CRH in both cycling gilts and castrated boars with maximum levels of 149.3 ± 16.5 nmol/1 and 138.3 ± 10.1 nmol/1, respectively. It can be concluded that administration of synthetic ACTH (tetracosactid) to pigs caused a concomitant elevation of cortisol and PGF(2α )metabolite levels in both cycling gilts as well as castrated boars. The administration of CRH to pigs resulted in an elevation of cortisol levels in both cycling gilts and castrated boars. Conversely, PGF(2α )metabolite levels were not influenced by the administration of CRH either in cycling gilts or in castrated boars
Atomic Spectral Features During Thermonuclear Flashes on Neutron Stars
The gravitational redshift measured by Cottam, Paerels and Mendez for the
neutron star (NS) in the low-mass X-ray binary EXO 0748-676 depends on the
identification of an absorption line during a type I burst as the H
line from hydrogenic Fe. We show that Fe is present above the photosphere as
long as during the burst. In
this limit, the total Fe column is for incident material of solar abundances and only depends on the
nuclear physics of the proton spallation. The Fe destruction creates many heavy
elements with which may imprint photo-ionization edges on the NS spectra
during a radius expansion event or in a burst cooling tail. Detecting these
features in concert with those from Fe would confirm a redshift measurement. We
also begin to address the radiative transfer problem, and find that a
concentrated Fe layer with and column (depending on the line depth) above the hotter
continuum photosphere is required to create the H line of the observed
strength. This estimate must be refined by considerations of non-LTE effects as
well as resonant line transport. Until these are carried out, we cannot say
whether the Fe column from accretion and spallation is in conflict with the
observations. We also show that hydrogenic Fe might remain in the photosphere

Tribological properties of diamond-like-carbon coating doped with tungsten
This paper presents the tribological properties of diamond-like-carbon coatings (DLC) doped with tungsten. The hardness of the DLC coating was determined using a micro-hardness tester. Friction tests were carried out on a tribometer in rotational motion in a 100Cr6 steel ball-disk association with a-C-H:W tungsten doped hydrogenated DLC coating. Tests were carried out with loads of 10 N, 25 N and 50 N under technically dry friction conditions. Using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the surface morphology was observed, and with a confocal microscope, the geometric structure of the surface was observed before and after the friction tests. The wetting angle of the samples was examined on an optical tensiometer for distilled water and diiodomethane. The results indicated that DLC coatings of the a-C:H:W type obtained by the PVD technique can be used in unlubricated high-load tribological systems
The effect of ultrafine WO3 nanoparticles on the organization of thylakoids enriched in photosystem II and energy transfer in photosystem II complexes
In this work, a new approach to construct self-assembled hybrid systems based on natural PSII-enriched thylakoid membranes (PSII BBY) is demonstrated. Superfine m-WO3 NPs (â1â2ânm) are introduced into PSII BBY. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) measurements showed that even the highest concentrations of NPs used did not degrade the PSII BBY membranes. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM), it is shown that the organization of PSII BBY depends strongly on the concentration of NPs applied. This proved that the superfine NPs can easily penetrate the thylakoid membrane and interact with its components. These changes are also related to the modified energy transfer between the external light-harvesting antennas and the PSII reaction center, shown by absorption and fluorescence experiments. The biohybrid system shows stability at pHâ6.5, the native operating environment of PSII, so a high rate of O2 evolution is expected. In addition, the light-induced water-splitting process can be further stimulated by the direct interaction of superfine WO3 NPs with the donor and acceptor sides of PSII. The water-splitting activity and stability of this colloidal system are under investigation
Lifetime measurement of the metastable 3d 2D5/2 state in the 40Ca+ ion using the shelving technique on a few-ion string
We present a measurement of the lifetime of the metastable 3d 2D5/2 state in
the 40Ca+ ion, using the so-called shelving technique on a string of five
Doppler laser-cooled ions in a linear Paul trap. A detailed account of the data
analysis is given, and systematic effects due to unwanted excitation processes
and collisions with background gas atoms are discussed and estimated. From a
total of 6805 shelving events, we obtain a lifetime
tau=1149+/-14(stat.)+/-4(sys.)ms, a result which is in agreement with the most

Effective area calibration of the reflection grating spectrometers of XMM-Newton. II. X-ray spectroscopy of DA white dwarfs
White dwarf spectra have been widely used as a calibration source for X-ray
and EUV instruments. The in-flight effective area calibration of the reflection
grating spectrometers (RGS) of XMM-Newton depend upon the availability of
reliable calibration sources. We investigate how well these white dwarf spectra
can be used as standard candles at the lowest X-ray energies in order to gauge
the absolute effective area scale of X-ray instruments. We calculate a grid of
model atmospheres for Sirius B and HZ 43A, and adjust the parameters using
several constraints until the ratio of the spectra of both stars agrees with
the ratio as observed by the low energy transmission grating spectrometer
(LETGS) of Chandra. This ratio is independent of any errors in the effective
area of the LETGS. We find that we can constrain the absolute X-ray spectrum of
both stars with better than 5 % accuracy. The best-fit model for both stars is
close to a pure hydrogen atmosphere, and we put tight limits to the amount of
helium or the thickness of a hydrogen layer in both stars. Our upper limit to
the helium abundance in Sirius B is 4 times below the previous detection based
on EUVE data. We also find that our results are sensitive to the adopted
cut-off in the Lyman pseudo-continuum opacity in Sirius B. We get best
agreement with a long wavelength cut-off. White dwarf model atmospheres can be
used to derive the effective area of X-ray spectrometers in the lowest energy

An optimized TOPS+ comparison method for enhanced TOPS models

Although methods based on highly abstract descriptions of protein structures, such as VAST and TOPS, can perform very fast protein structure comparison, the results can lack a high degree of biological significance. Previously we have discussed the basic mechanisms of our novel method for structure comparison based on our TOPS+ model (Topological descriptions of Protein Structures Enhanced with Ligand Information). In this paper we show how these results can be significantly improved using parameter optimization, and we call the resulting optimised TOPS+ method as advanced TOPS+ comparison method i.e. advTOPS+.
Results
We have developed a TOPS+ string model as an improvement to the TOPS [1-3] graph model by considering loops as secondary structure elements (SSEs) in addition to helices and strands, representing ligands as first class objects, and describing interactions between SSEs, and SSEs and ligands, by incoming and outgoing arcs, annotating SSEs with the interaction direction and type. Benchmarking results of an all-against-all pairwise comparison using a large dataset of 2,620 non-redundant structures from the PDB40 dataset [4] demonstrate the biological significance, in terms of SCOP classification at the superfamily level, of our TOPS+ comparison method.
Conclusions
Our advanced TOPS+ comparison shows better performance on the PDB40 dataset [4] compared to our basic TOPS+ method, giving 90 percent accuracy for SCOP alpha+beta; a 6 percent increase in accuracy compared to the TOPS and basic TOPS+ methods. It also outperforms the TOPS, basic TOPS+ and SSAP comparison methods on the Chew-Kedem dataset [5], achieving 98 percent accuracy.
