    Dispersive Response of a Disordered Superconducting Quantum Metamaterial

    We consider a disordered quantum metamaterial formed by an array of superconducting flux qubits coupled to microwave photons in a cavity. We map the system on the Tavis-Cummings model accounting for the disorder in frequencies of the qubits. The complex transmittance is calculated with the parameters taken from state-of-the-art experiments. We demonstrate that photon phase shift measurements allow to distinguish individual resonances in the metamaterial with up to 100 qubits, in spite of the decoherence spectral width being remarkably larger than the effective coupling constant. Our simulations are in agreement with the results of the recently reported experiment.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

    Marine structure derived calcium phosphate-polymer biocomposites for local antibiotic delivery

Hydrothermally converted coralline hydroxyapatite (HAp) particles loaded with medically active substances were used to develop polylactic acid (PLA) thin film composites for slow drug delivery systems. The effects of HAp particles within PLA matrix on the gentamicin (GM) release and release kinetics were studied. The gentamicin release kinetics seemed to follow Power law Korsmeyer Peppas model with mainly diffusional process with a number of different drug transport mechanisms. Statistical analysis shows very significant difference on the release of gentamicin between GM containing PLA (PLAGM) and GM containing HAp microspheres within PLA matrix (PLAHApGM) devices, which PLAHApGM displays lower release rates. The use of HAp particles improved drug stabilization and higher drug encapsulation efficiency of the carrier. HAp is also the source of Ca2+ for the regeneration and repair of diseased bone tissue. The release profiles, exhibited a steady state release rate with significant antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (SH1000) even at high concentration of bacteria. The devices also indicated significant ability to control the growth of bacterial even after four weeks of drug release. Clinical release profiles can be easily tuned from drug-HAp physicochemical interactions and degradation kinetics of polymer matrix. The developed systems could be applied to prevent microbial adhesion to medical implant surfaces and to treat infections mainly caused by S. aureus in surgery

    Weak continuous monitoring of a flux qubit using coplanar waveguide resonator

    We study a flux qubit in a coplanar waveguide resonator by measuring transmission through the system. In our system with the flux qubit decoupled galvanically from the resonator, the intermediate coupling regime is achieved. In this regime dispersive readout is possible with weak backaction on the qubit. The detailed theoretical analysis and simulations give a good agreement with the experimental data and allow to make the qubit characterization.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to be published in Phys.     Comparative study of coral conversion, Part 2: Microstructural evolution of calcium phosphate

    © 2015, The Australian Ceramic Society. Calcium phosphate materials can be easily produced by a number of wet chemical methods that involve both acidic and basic environments. In our previous study, we investigated calcium phosphates such as monetite (DCPA), hydroxyapatite (HAp) and whitlockite which were successfully produced by mechano-chemical method from corals obtained from the Great Barrier Reef. It was observed that a number of synthesis factors such as the pH of the environment, the reaction temperature and the chemistry influenced the crystal size formed. A number of theories have been suggested on the mechanisms of crystal formation; however, very few mechanisms have been universally accepted. The present work was aimed to explore the evolution of crystalline calcium phosphate and their morphology with respect to the pH of the environment and reaction time. Conversion of coral to calcium phosphates was carried out with stoichiometric amount of required H3PO4 or (NH4)2HPO4, to obtain hydroxyapatite or tricalcium phosphate (TCP) phases. The acidic or basic solution was added, drop wise, at a rate of 2 mL min-1, to 6 g of coral powder suspended in 300 mL of distilled water at 80 ± 0.5°C on a hot plate with magnetic stirrer. The pH of reaction was monitored. Crystal morphology and the phases were identified by XRD, FTIR, and SEM studies. It was observed that under acidic conditions (H3PO4), dissolution and then precipitation influences the crystal morphology and transition from plate like to rod like hydroxyapatite structure. During the first hour of the dissolution a monetite and hydroxyapatite mixture precipitates and then the full conversion to hydroxyapatite is observed. However under basic conditions (NH4)2HPO4), pH is only marginally changed within the environment and just surface conversion of the calcium carbonate structure of coral to hydroxyapatite and a very small amount of tri-calcium phosphate is observed.     Effect of nano based seed treatment insecticides on seed quality in Pigeonpea

    A laboratory experiment was conducted to know the effect seed treatment with nano insecticides on seed quality of pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) cv. TS3R. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of macro and nano insecticides on seed germination and vigour of Pigeonpea. Different recommended seed treatment insecticides viz, malathion, fenvalerate, emamectine benzoate, thiodicarb, sweet flag and neem seed kernel powder insecticides were synthesized to nano form using high energy planetary ball mill. The Pigeonpea seed were treated with different nano insecticides i.e., 10-90 per cent reduction in actual dosage. Among the different treatments studied, seed treated with nano malathion 50 per cent lesser than normal dosage, fenvalerate 60 per cent lesser, thiodicarb 10 per cent lesser, emamectine benzoate 30 per cent lesser, sweetflag 70 per cent lesser, neem seed kernel powder 40 per cent lesser than actual recommended dosage gave significantly higher seed germination (98.0, 98.67, 98.67, 97.0, 99.0 and 98.67 percent) ,less number of abnormal seedlings (1.0, 0.33, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0 and 0.33 per cent) , shoot length (10.13, 9.00, 11.47, 9.50, 10.90 and 10.87 cm), root length (12.56, 12.93, 12.83, 12.60 11.50 and 13.00 cm), seedling dry weight (85.73, 87.40, 88.47, 87.70, 88.60 and 88.27 g) and seedling vigour index (2223, 2164, 2397, 2143, 2217 and 2354) as compared to untreated seeds and macro insecticides. Therefore, it is very clear that nano based insecticides has a significant (0.1 %) impact on the seed quality improvement
