    Effects of husbandry and low-dose lipopolysaccharide challenge on the acute phase response of young pigs

    End of project reportIn recent years, concern has grown for the welfare of domesticated animals in different production systems (Appleby and Hughes, 1997). Poor welfare can result in poor performance and productivity. However, the consumers are also requesting more welfare-friendly systems, as reflected by the importance that ‘organic’ and ‘free-range’ products have gained in our markets. Furthermore, there are ethical reasons for safeguarding the welfare of animals in our care. Thus, it is scientists’ task to be able to develop methods and techniques that can help to assess the welfare objectively. Traditionally, welfare assessment relied on the study of behaviour and the measurement of endocrine parameters. Acute phase response mediators and products, such as pro-inflammatory cytokines and acute phase proteins, emerged recently as potential indicators of infection and herd health status (Eckersall, 2000; Petersen et al., 2004).     Measurements and Monte-Carlo simulations of the particle self-shielding effect of B4C grains in neutron shielding concrete

    A combined measurement and Monte-Carlo simulation study was carried out in order to characterize the particle self-shielding effect of B4C grains in neutron shielding concrete. Several batches of a specialized neutron shielding concrete, with varying B4C grain sizes, were exposed to a 2 {\AA} neutron beam at the R2D2 test beamline at the Institute for Energy Technology located in Kjeller, Norway. The direct and scattered neutrons were detected with a neutron detector placed behind the concrete blocks and the results were compared to Geant4 simulations. The particle self-shielding effect was included in the Geant4 simulations by calculating effective neutron cross-sections during the Monte-Carlo simulation process. It is shown that this method well reproduces the measured results. Our results show that shielding calculations for low-energy neutrons using such materials would lead to an underestimate of the shielding required for a certain design scenario if the particle self-shielding effect is not included in the calculations.Comment: This manuscript version is made available under the CC-BY-NC-ND 4.0 license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/4.0

    Factors associated with smoking in low-income persons with and without chronic illness

    INTRODUCTION Tobacco disparities persist among low-income smokers who seek care from safety-net clinics. Many of these patients suffer from chronic illnesses (CILs) that are associated with and exacerbated by smoking. The objective of the current study was to examine the differences between safety-net patients with and without CILs in terms of nicotine dependence and related factors (such as depression, anxiety) and self-efficacy regarding ability to abstain from smoking. METHODS Sixty-four low-income smokers who thought about or intended to quit smoking were recruited from the San Francisco Health Network (SFHN) and assessed for CILs, nicotine dependence, depression, anxiety, and smoking abstinence self-efficacy. Four one-way analyses of variance were used to examine the difference between those with and without CIL on the latter four variables. RESULTS The CIL group had significantly higher anxiety (CIL: 8.0 ± 5.35; non-CIL: 4.44 ± 3.48; p=0.02) and tended to have higher nicotine dependence (CIL: 5.40 ± 2.58; non-CIL: 3.88 ± 2.28; p=0.04). In the CIL group, nicotine dependence was positively correlated with anxiety [r(62)=0.39; p\u3c0.01] and negatively correlated with smoking abstinence self-efficacy [r(62)= -0.38; p\u3c0.01]. Both depression (Spearman’s rho=0.39; p\u3c0.01) and anxiety (Spearman’s rho=0.29; p\u3c0.05) were associated with total number of CIL categories. CONCLUSIONS Safety-net patients who smoke and suffer from CILs may be suffering from higher levels of anxiety and have less confidence in their ability to quit smoking. Incorporating mood management and developing interventions that increase a sense of self-efficacy for refraining from smoking may be necessary to help low-income smokers quit smoking

    Experiences and Satisfaction of High-Risk Mothers Who Gave Birth in Select Facilities in Legazpi City, Philippines

    Among the interventions implemented to curb maternal mortality in the Philippines, service delivery networks (SDNs) have been one of the most important. However, due to their recent implementation, frameworks to assess the quality of care they provide have not yet been established. To address this need, we had formulated the Integrated Patient-Centered Health Service Framework and used it to explore the satisfaction of mothers who gave birth in select facilities Legazpi City Philippines. We conducted key-informant interviews with 14 mothers. We found out that they were satisfied with the quality of care during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, and post-partum; however, the quality of care during labor and delivery, adherence to referral protocols, and respect for patient‟s autonomy can still be improved. The framework should be used by program managers to have a qualitative measure of quality of care provided by SDNs, as well as to ensure that referral protocols were implemented

    Phylogenetic, Cytogenetic and Morphological Evidences are Critical for Recognizing a New Genus: Valdesiana, an Iberian Intergeneric Allopolyploid Between Schenkia and Exaculum

    The present taxonomic status of Schenkia elegans, endemism recently described in the Iberian Peninsula, and its relationship with the sympatric and the nearest morphological species Schenkia spicata and Exaculum pusillum is revaluated. Different kinds of evidence based on plant morphology, ploidy estimation by flow cytometry, karyotype characterisation, and phylogenetic data have been analysed. Two maternally inherited plastid DNA regions (trnL intron and trnL-F spacer) and biparentally inherited nuclear ribosomal DNA sequence region (nrDNA ITS) have been used. Comparative multivariate analyses show an intermediate morphology of the S. elegans plants between the other two species studied. Flow cytometry and karyotype analyses in S. elegans point to an allopolyploid origin, with the latter constituted by a mixture of those of the diploids S. spicata and E. pusillum. Phylogenetic analyses based on plastid and nuclear DNA regions cluster S. elegans in two different clades, those of S. spicata and E. pusillum, suggesting a possible hybrid origin of S. elegans between both species, acting as maternal or paternal progenitors. In consequence, taking in consideration the taxonomic relationships among genera (Exaculum, Schenkia and the closely related genus Zeltnera found in America), a monotypic genus Valdesiana gen. nov. is proposed to accommodate the allopolyploid species, combined as V. elegans, for which immediate conservation measures must be evaluated.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad CGL2013-45037-Pproject CULTIVAR CENTRO-01-0145-FEDER-00002

    Pathogenicity and fusaric acid production by fusarium proliferatum isolated from garlic in Spain

    Fusarium proliferatum has been reported on garlic in the north west U.S.A., Spain and Serbia, causing as water-soaked tan lesions on cloves. Moreover, F. proliferatum is known to produce a range of toxins, including fumonisin B1, moniliformin, beauvericin, fusaproliferin and fusaric acid, which are implicated in pathogenesis. In this study six randomly selected F. proliferatum isolates from garlic were tested for pathogenicity and screened for fusaric acid production. Healthy seedlings of onion (Allium cepa), leek (A. porrum) and chives (A. schoenoprasum) and garlic clones (A. sativum) were inoculated. Onion seedlings and garlic clones were soaked in the conidial suspensions of each F. proliferatum isolate for 24 h and then planted in flats containing soil previously inoculated with the same isolate of F. proliferatum. Plants were maintained in a temperature and light-controlled greenhouse (12 h/12 h light/dark; 25/21°C). The root and bulb/clove rot disease symptoms were graded into five classes following the method of Stankovick et al. (2007). A disease severity index (DSI) was calculated as the mean of three plants of each species and four test replicates. Symptoms on onion and garlic plants were observed three weeks after inoculation. The overall effects of isolate, host and variety were analyzed. Effects were significant for all the studied isolates. The correlations between isolate pathogenicity and production of FA are also discussed

    Mitogenomes reveal two major influxes of Papuan ancestry across Wallacea following the last glacial maximum and Austronesian contact

    The tropical archipelago of Wallacea contains thousands of individual islands interspersed between mainland Asia and Near Oceania, and marks the location of a series of ancient oceanic voyages leading to the peopling of Sahul—i.e., the former continent that joined Australia and New Guinea at a time of lowered sea level—by 50,000 years ago. Despite the apparent deep antiquity of human presence in Wallacea, prior population history research in this region has been hampered by patchy archaeological and genetic records and is largely concentrated upon more recent history that follows the arrival of Austronesian seafarers ~3000–4000 years ago (3–4 ka). To shed light on the deeper history of Wallacea and its connections with New Guinea and Australia, we performed phylogeographic analyses on 656 whole mitogenomes from these three regions, including 186 new samples from eight Wallacean islands and three West Papuan populations. Our results point to a surprisingly dynamic population history in Wallacea, marked by two periods of extensive demographic change concentrated around the Last Glacial Maximum ~15 ka and post-Austronesian contact ~3 ka. These changes appear to have greatly diminished genetic signals informative about the original peopling of Sahul, and have important implications for our current understanding of the population history of the region.1.     Low temperature glass/crystal transition in ionic liquids determined by H-bond <i>vs. </i>coulombic strength

    Self-assembled ionic liquid crystals are anisotropic ionic conductors, with potential applications in areas as important as solar cells, battery electrolytes and catalysis. However, many of these applications are still limited by the lack of precise control over the variety of phases that can be formed (nematic, smectic, or semi/fully crystalline), determined by a complex pattern of different intermolecular interactions. Here we report the results of a systematic study of crystallization of several imidazolium salts in which the relative contribution of isotropic coulombic and directional H-bond interactions is carefully tuned. Our results demonstrate that the relative strength of directional H-bonds with respect to the isotropic Coulomb interaction determines the formation of a crystalline, semi-crystalline or glassy phase at low temperature. The possibility of pinpointing H-bonding directionality in ionic liquids make them model systems to study the crystallization of an ionic solid under a perturbed Coulomb potential

    Effect of multicarbohydrase enzymes containing α-galactosidase on the growth and apparent metabolizable energy digestibility of broiler chickens: a meta-analysis

    peer-reviewedExogenous enzyme supplementation is a valid strategy to improve nutrient availability and growth performance in broilers. Traditional carbohydrases, such as xylanase and β-glucanase, are well-researched solutions to increase the nutritional value of cereal grains, whilst reducing any negative impact of associated viscous polysaccharides. The feeding value of soybean meal and other protein rich oilcakes may not be fully exploited with traditional enzymes, as structures such as galacto-oligosaccharides and pectins require specific α-galactosidase, mannanase and other hemicellulolytic enzymes. This study aimed to summarize, in a meta-analysis, the results from independently run randomized controlled studies in various global locations that evaluated the effect of two distinct multicarbohydrase formulations, in which an α-galactosidase was combined with either xylanase (AGX) or β-glucanase (AGB). Through meta-regression analysis, the mean difference effects of AGX and AGB supplementation on broiler final body weight (BW), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and nitrogen-corrected apparent metabolizable energy (AMEN) were calculated for each relevant study. Fixed and random-effects models were used to compute the standardized mean difference (SMD) and confidence intervals, with corrective actions taken to ensure compliance with publication bias and heterogeneity by the Egger test and the Cochran Q test. Adjusted models showed that the AGX supplementation increased broiler BW (SMD=+30 g; 95 % CI: 0.08_0.48; P = 0.006) and improved FCR (SMD=−0.01 g/g; 95 % CI: -0.51_-0.11; P = 0.002). A composite evaluation of independent studies showed increased AMEN in broilers supplemented with AGX (SMD=+58 kcal/kg; 95 % CI: 0.45_1.10; P < 0.001). Furthermore, meta-analysis confirms that AGB supplementation increased BW (SMD=+56 g; 95 % CI: 0.32_0.91; P < 0.001), improved FCR (SMD=−0.04 g/g; 95 % CI: −0.76_−0.20; P = 0.006) and increased AMEN (SMD=+49 kcal/kg; 95 % CI: 0.30_1.07; P < 0.001). Overall, this meta-analysis found that dietary supplementation of broiler diets with the multicarbohydrases containing α-galactosidase considered in this evaluation, improved broiler growth during rearing periods of 35 days or more.
