    Income inequality and minimum consumption: implications for growth

    We propose a model that recognizes hierarchical goods and income inequality among households. The model demonstrates that growth is impacted not by inequality per se, but "absolute" income distribution or the level of poverty underlying the income distribution. Specifically, when a large fraction of the population is below the threshold income necessary for subsistence, aggregate consumption is depressed. In low-income countries, high inequality of income retards consumption growth, whereas in high-income countries inequality may be neutral for growth. Cross-country regressions indicate a positive and significant relationship between the middle quintile share of income and aggregate consumption.     Synthesis and cytotoxicities of 7-aza rebeccamycin analogues bearing various substituents on the sugar moiety, on the imide nitrogen and on the carbazole framework

    The synthesis of a family of rebeccamycin analogues in which one indole unit has been replaced by a 7-azaindole moiety is described. Substitutions have been carried out on the imide nitrogen, on the carbazole framework and on the sugar part. Compounds with a lactam upper heterocycle have also been prepared. The cytotoxicities of the newly synthesized compounds toward four tumor cell lines, one murine leukemia (L1210) and three human tumor cell lines (prostate carcinoma DU145, colon carcinoma HT29, and non-small cell lung carcinoma A549) have been evaluated and compared to those of rebeccamycin and parent non-aza and aza compound

    The syntheses of dipyrrolo[3,4-a:3,4-c]carbazole-1,4,6-triones and dipyrrolo[3,4-a:3,4-c]carbazole-3,4,6-triones are reported. These compounds can be considered as granulatimide analogues in which a maleimide replaces the imidazole moiety and a five-membered lactam ring replaces the upper maleimide. The Chk1 inhibitory properties of the more soluble compounds have been evaluated and their in vitro antiproliferative activities toward three tumor cell lines: murine leukemia L1210, and human colon carcinoma HT29 and HCT116. Due to their insolubility, the biological activities of the other compounds in this series could not be evaluated. All the tested compounds proved to be potent Chk1 inhibitor

    Combined modalities of resistance in an oxaliplatin-resistant human gastric cancer cell line with enhanced sensitivity to 5-fluorouracil

    To identify mechanisms underlying oxaliplatin resistance, a subline of the human gastric adenocarcinoma TSGH cell line, S3, was made resistant to oxaliplatin by continuous selection against increasing drug concentrations. Compared with the parental TSGH cells, the S3 subline showed 58-fold resistance to oxaliplatin; it also displayed 11-, 2-, and 4.7-fold resistance to cis-diammine-dichloroplatinum (II) (CDDP), copper sulphate, and arsenic trioxide, respectively. Interestingly, S3 cells were fourfold more susceptible to 5-fluorouracil-induced cytotoxicity due to downregulation of thymidylate synthase. Despite elevated glutathione levels in S3 cells, there was no alteration of resistant phenotype to oxaliplatin or CDDP when cells were co-treated with glutathione-depleting agent, l-buthionine-(S,R)-sulphoximine. Cellular CDDP and oxaliplatin accumulation was decreased in S3 cells. In addition, amounts of oxaliplatin- and CDDP–DNA adducts in S3 cells were about 15 and 40% of those seen with TSGH cells, respectively. Western blot analysis showed increased the expression level of copper transporter ATP7A in S3 cells compared with TSGH cells. Partial reversal of the resistance of S3 cells to oxaliplatin and CDDP was observed by treating cell with ATP7A-targeted siRNA oligonucleotides or P-type ATPase-inhibitor sodium orthovanadate. Besides, host reactivation assay revealed enhanced repair of oxaliplatin- or CDDP-damaged DNA in S3 cells compared with TSGH cells. Together, our results show that the mechanism responsible for oxaliplatin and CDDP resistance in S3 cells is the combination of increased DNA repair and overexpression of ATP7A. Downregulation of thymidylate synthase in S3 cells renders them more susceptible to 5-fluorouracil-induced cytotoxicity. These findings could pave ways for future efforts to overcome oxaliplatin resistance

D e f i c i e n c i e s a f f e c t i n g q u a l i t y of produce are i d e n t i f i e d with the system a s s o c i a t e d with the transport by the small v e s s e l s in the regional trade. A l t e r n a t i v e systems such a s , r e f r i g e r a t e d shipping and air-r transport are constrained by economic c o n s i d e r a t i o n s . I t i s suggested that measures for improving i n t r a - r e g i o n a l transport of f r u i t and vegetables need to be focussed on the small v e s s e l systems. These measures must provide for improved l o g i s t i c s at shipping and require i n t e g r a t i o n of a c t i v i t i e s ranging from h a r v e s t i n g , through packaging to loading on s h i p .
