Perfect quantum state transfer of hard-core bosons on weighted path graphs
The ability to accurately transfer quantum information through networks is an
important primitive in distributed quantum systems. While perfect quantum state
transfer (PST) can be effected by a single particle undergoing continuous-time
quantum walks on a variety of graphs, it is not known if PST persists for many
particles in the presence of interactions. We show that if single-particle PST
occurs on one-dimensional weighted path graphs, then systems of hard-core
bosons undergoing quantum walks on these paths also undergo PST. The analysis
extends the Tonks-Girardeau ansatz to weighted graphs using techniques in
algebraic graph theory. The results suggest that hard-core bosons do not
generically undergo PST, even on graphs which exhibit single-particle PST.Comment: 19 page
SUMSS: A Wide-Field Radio Imaging Survey of the Southern Sky. I. Science goals, survey design and instrumentation
The Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope, operating at 843 MHz with a 5
square degree field of view, is carrying out a radio imaging survey of the sky
south of declination -30 deg. This survey (the Sydney University Molonglo Sky
Survey, or SUMSS) produces images with a resolution of 43" x 43" cosec(Dec.)
and an rms noise level of about 1 mJy/beam. SUMSS is therefore similar in
sensitivity and resolution to the northern NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS; Condon et
al. 1998). The survey is progressing at a rate of about 1000 square degrees per
year, yielding individual and statistical data for many thousands of weak radio
sources. This paper describes the main characteristics of the survey, and

Black-holes, topological strings and large N phase transitions
The counting of microstates of BPS black-holes on local Calabi-Yau of the
form is explored
by computing the partition function of q-deformed Yang-Mills theory on .
We obtain, at finite , the instanton expansion of the gauge theory. It can
be written exactly as the partition function for U(N) Chern-Simons gauge theory
on a Lens space, summed over all non-trivial vacua, plus a tower of
non-perturbative instanton contributions. In the large limit we find a
peculiar phase structure in the model. At weak string coupling the theory
reduces to the trivial sector and the topological string partition function on
the resolved conifold is reproduced in this regime. At a certain critical
point, instantons are enhanced and the theory undergoes a phase transition into
a strong coupling regime. The transition from the strong coupling phase to the

D-Instantons and asymptotic geometries
The large N limit of D3-branes is expected to correspond to a superconformal
field theory living on the boundary of the anti-de Sitter space appearing in
the near-horizon geometry. Dualizing the D3-brane to a D-instanton, we show
that this limit is equivalent to a type IIB S-duality. In both cases one
effectively reaches the near-horizon geometry. This provides an alternative
approach to an earlier derivation of the same result that makes use of the

The relationship between web enjoyment and student perceptions and learning using a web-based tutorial
Web enjoyment has been regarded as a component of system experience. However, there has been little targeted research considering the role of web enjoyment alone in student learning using web-based systems. To address this gap, this study aims to examine the influence of web enjoyment on learning performance and perceptions by controlling system experience as a variable in the study. 74 students participated in the study, using a web-based tutorial covering subject matter in the area of 'Computation and algorithms'. Their learning performance was assessed with a pre-test and a post-test and their learning perceptions were evaluated with a questionnaire. The results indicated that there are positive relationships between the levels of web enjoyment and perceived usefulness and non-linear navigation for users with similar, significant levels of system experience. The implications of these findings in relation to web-based learning are explored and ways in which the needs of students who report different levels of web enjoyment might be met are discussed
Are non-brain stem-dead cardiac donors acceptable donors?
BACKGROUND: The deleterious effects of brainstem death (BSD) on donor cardiac function and endothelial integrity have been documented previously. Domino cardiac donation (heart of a heart-lung recipient transplanted into another recipient) is a way to avoid the effects of brainstem death and may confer both short- and long-term benefits to allograft recipients. METHODS: This study evaluates short- and long-term outcome in heart recipients of BSD donors (cadaveric) as compared with domino hearts explanted from patients who underwent heart-lung transplantation. RESULTS: Patients having undergone cardiac transplantation between April 1989 and August 2001 at Papworth Hospital were included (n = 571). Domino donor hearts were used in 81 (14%) of these cases. The pre-operative transpulmonary gradient was not significantly different between the two groups (p = 0.7). There was no significant difference in 30-day mortality (4.9% for domino vs 8.6% for BSD, p = 0.38) or in actuarial survival (p = 0.72). Ischemic time was significantly longer in the BSD group (p < 0.001). Acute rejection and infection episodes were not significantly different (p = 0.24 vs: 0.08). Relative to the BSD group, the risk (95% confidence interval) of acute rejection in the domino group was 0.89 (0.73 to 1.08). Similarly, the relative risk of infection was 0.78 (0.59 to 1.03). The 5-year actuarial survival rates (95% confidence interval) were 78% (69% to 87%) and 69% (65% to 73%) in the domino and BSD groups respectively. Angiography data at 2 years were available in 50 (62%) and 254 (52%) patients in the domino and BSD groups, respectively. The rates for 2-year freedom from cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV) were 96% (91% to 100%) and 93% (90% to 96%), respectively. CONCLUSION: Despite the lack of endothelial cell activation after brainstem death and a shorter ischemic time, the performance of domino donor hearts was similar to that of BSD donor hearts. This may indicate a similar pathology (i.e., endothelial cell activation) in the domino donors
The optical-ultraviolet continuum of Seyfert 2 galaxies
This paper aims to understand the continuum of Seyfert 2 galaxies. By fitting
the single galaxies in the sample of Heckman et al. (1995) with composite
models (shock+ photoionization from the active center), we show that five main
components characterize the SED of the continuum. Shocks play an important role
since they produce a high temperature zone where soft X-rays are emitted.
We show that in the optical-UV range, the slope of the NLR emission
reproduces the observed values, and may be the main component of the
featureless continuum. The presence of star forming regions cannot be excluded
in the circumnuclear region of various Seyfert galaxies. An attempt is made to
find their fingerprints in the observed AGN spectra. Finally, it is
demonstrated that multi-cloud models are necessary to interpret the spectra of

The association between premorbid cognitive ability and social functioning and suicide among young men: A historical-prospective cohort study
Previous studies have found associations between low cognitive ability and later completed suicide. The aim of this study was to examine the association between cognitive ability and social functioning in adolescence, and later completed suicide in a large population-based longitudinal study. Data from the Israeli Draft Board Register for 634,655 Israeli male adolescents aged 16 and 17 was linked to a causes-of-death data registry, with a mean follow-up of 10.6 years for completed suicide. Our results show that in males without a psychiatric diagnosis, both low (adjusted HR=1.51, 95% CI: 1.19–1.92) and high (adjusted HR=1.36, 95% CI: 1.04–1.77) cognitive ability, and very poor (adjusted HR=2.30, 95% CI: 1.34–3.95) and poor (adjusted HR=1.64, 95% CI: 1.34–2.07) social functioning were associated with increased risk for later completed suicide; however positive predictive values were low (PPVs=0.09% and 0.10%, for low cognitive ability and very poor or poor social functioning, respectively). No association between cognitive ability or social functioning and risk for suicide was found in males with a psychiatric diagnosis. These data do not support the clinical utility of screening for such potential predictors
