    Irreducible representations of Upq[gl(2/2)]

The two-parametric quantum superalgebra Upq[gl(2/2)]U_{pq}[gl(2/2)] and its representations are considered. All finite-dimensional irreducible representations of this quantum superalgebra can be constructed and classified into typical and nontypical ones according to a proposition proved in the present paper. This proposition is a nontrivial deformation from the one for the classical superalgebra gl(2/2), unlike the case of one-parametric deformations.Comment: Latex, 8 pages. A reference added in v.

Synthesis of ozone from air via a polymer-electrolyte-membrane cell with a doped tin oxide anode

The generation of ozone from air using an electrochemical cell consisting of an air cathode, a polymer-electrolyte-membrane (PEM), and a doped tin oxide anode is reported. This synthesis is environmentally friendly compared to the conventional high-voltage corona discharge process since NOx formation is eliminated; a higher ozone concentration is generated; and lower energy may be required. © The Royal Society of Chemistry 2006.postprin

© 2014 Sridhar et al.; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.Background: Neuromyelitis optica (NMO) is an autoimmune inflammatory condition of the central nervous system that is characterized by circulating anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies, transverse myelitis and optic neuritis. NMO spectrum disorders are rarely reported in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). We report a fatal case of anti-aquaporin-4 antibody positive NMO spectrum disorder in a patient who was receiving treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis. Case presentation: A previously healthy 42-year-old Chinese man was diagnosed with smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis. After one month of anti-tuberculosis treatment, he presented with acute generalized weakness and rapid neurological deterioration. Spinal imaging and anti-aquaporin-4 antibody positivity established a diagnosis of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder. Conclusion: This is the first reported case of anti-aquaporin-4 antibody-positive NMO spectrum disorder in a patient with active tuberculosis. It shows the usefulness of testing for anti-aquaporin-4 antibodies while evaluating neurological deterioration in patients with tuberculosis. The literature on the rare association between NMO spectrum disorders and TB is reviewed.published_or_final_versio

Two-parametric deformation Up,q[gl(2/1)]U_{p,q}[gl(2/1)] and its induced representations

The two-parametric quantum superalgebra Up,q[gl(2/1)]U_{p,q}[gl(2/1)] is consistently defined. A construction procedure for induced representations of Up,q[gl(2/1)]U_{p,q}[gl(2/1)] is described and allows us to construct explicitly all (typical and nontypical) finite-dimensional representations of this quantum superalgebra. In spite of some specific features, the present approach is similar to a previously developed method [1] which, as shown here, is applicable not only to the one-parametric quantum deformations but also to the multi-parametric ones.Comment: Latex, 13 pages, no figur

Effects of the trawling ban on the diversity of demersal crustaceans (orders: decapoda and stomatopoda) in the marine environment of Hong Kong, South China

Oral PresentationFisheries & Marine Resources ManagementBottom trawling has been demonstrated to be one of the most destructive fishing methods to marine benthic communities. Since the 1970s, marine fishery resources in Hong Kong, especially large predatory species, have been overexploited by non-selective fishing gears including bottom and pelagic trawlers. This fishing down the trophic level has resulted in a benthic ecosystem primarily dominated by small herbivorous and omnivorous fishes and crustaceans. To mitigate such impacts, the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region has implemented a territory-wide trawling ban in local waters since 31 December 2012. This study aims to investigate whether crustacean resources, in particular of the orders Decapoda and ...postprin

Glycine decarboxylase deficiency causes neural tube defects and features of non-ketotic hyperglycinemia in mice.

    Get PDF
Glycine decarboxylase (GLDC) acts in the glycine cleavage system to decarboxylate glycine and transfer a one-carbon unit into folate one-carbon metabolism. GLDC mutations cause a rare recessive disease non-ketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH). Mutations have also been identified in patients with neural tube defects (NTDs); however, the relationship between NKH and NTDs is unclear. We show that reduced expression of Gldc in mice suppresses glycine cleavage system activity and causes two distinct disease phenotypes. Mutant embryos develop partially penetrant NTDs while surviving mice exhibit post-natal features of NKH including glycine accumulation, early lethality and hydrocephalus. In addition to elevated glycine, Gldc disruption also results in abnormal tissue folate profiles, with depletion of one-carbon-carrying folates, as well as growth retardation and reduced cellular proliferation. Formate treatment normalizes the folate profile, restores embryonic growth and prevents NTDs, suggesting that Gldc deficiency causes NTDs through limiting supply of one-carbon units from mitochondrial folate metabolism

Electrolytic generation of ozone on antimony- And nickel-doped tin oxide electrode

In a recent report, ozone was produced with high efficiency in perchloric acid on an anode coated with antimony-doped tin oxide. We report here that high current efficiency can be enhanced if trace amounts of a second dopant, nickel, is present. The effect of composition of the coating in terms of Ni:Sb:Sn was carefully analyzed. The optimum Ni:Sb:Sn ratio, determined to be 1:8:500, was determined giving a corresponding ozone generation current efficiency of over 30% at room temperature. The highest current efficiency was observed at an optimum operating potential of 2.2 V vs Ag/AgCl. Electrolytic generation of ozone in perchloric acid, sulfuric acid, and phosphoric acid at different concentrations was also studied and compared. In 0.1 M H 2SO 4, the ozone concentration reached 34 mg/L and a current efficiency of 36.3% could be achieved. This is about the highest current efficiency ever reported for electrolytic generation of ozone in an aqueous medium at room temperature. © 2005 The Electrochemical Society. A statistics-based sensor selection scheme for continuous probabilistic queries in sensor networks

An approach to improve the reliability of query results based on error-prone sensors is to use redundant sensors. However, this approach is expensive; moreover, some sensors may malfunction and their readings need to be discarded. In this paper, we propose a statistical approach to decide which sensors to be used to answer a query. In particular, we propose to solve the problem with the aid of continuous probabilistic query (CPQ), which is originally used to manage uncertain data and is associated with a probabilistic guarantee on the query result. Based on the historical data values from the sensors, the query type, and the requirement on the query, we present methods to select an appropriate set of sensors and provide reliable answers for aggregate queries. Our algorithm is demonstrated in simulation experiments to provide accurate and robust query results. © 2005 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 11th IEEE International Conference on Embedded and Real-Time Computing Systems and Applications (RTCSA 2005), Hong Kong, China, 17-19 August 2005. Impact of fermentation and incorporation of cashew flour on the micronutrient and macronutrient contents of millet flour sold in the market: case of the city of Yamoussoukro

The weaning period of an infant, which should begin from 7 months, is characterized by the gradual change from a liquid to a solid diet. After 6 months, the nutrients contained in breast milk are no longer sufficient to meet the growing demands of the infant. This is the ideal period for the introduction of a complementary food to make up for any deficiencies. To contribute to this situation, two groups, each consisting of five combinations of millet flour, enriched with cashew flour were formulated. The samples M100A0 (Unenriched millet flour), M92,5A7,5, M85A15, M77, 5A22,5 and M70A30 were enriched with 7.5%, 15%, 22,5% and 30% downgraded cashew flour, respectively. The samples MF100A0 (Unenriched fermented millet flour), MF92, 5A7,5, MF85A15, MF77, 5A22,5 and MF70A30 were constructed in a corresponding manner, the only difference being that the millet flour was fermented. After analyses of the different formulations, the best proportions of proteins were observed in MF70A30, MF77, 5A22, 5 and M70A30, which were 13.13%, 12.25% and 12.25%, respectively. Samples M70A30 and M77,5A22,5 exhibited the best iron contents of 8.44 ppm and 8.12 ppm, respectively. The protein contents of the unfortified samples M100A0 and MF100A0 were 7.53% and 6.13% respectively. Formulations MF70A30, M77,5A2,5 and M70A30 with levels of 1.06 ppm, 0.98 ppm and 0.98 ppm, respectively, gave the best zinc contents. The moisture contents of the formulated samples had minimal changes. They varied between 6.16 ± 0.06% and 7.6 ± 0.99% for unfermented samples, and between 6.35 ± 0.32% and 7.0 ± 0.02% for fermented samples. The humidity values of the two groups of samples were not significantly different at P≤0.05. These low moisture contents in the flours are important for better preservation. At the end of this study, certain formulations were selected because of their good nutritional profile. Thus the formulations M70A30 composed of 70% millet flour and 30% cashew flour and MF70A30 composed of 70% fermented millet flour and 30% cashew flour present the best options and could be used as quality infant flours.&nbsp
