    In the history of the fishing village, namely, Kovalam (lat. 12°47'N long. 80°15'E), formerly known as Covelong, situated 35 km south of Madras City, heavy landings of the Indian white prawn, Penaeus indicus caught with gill net have occurred for the firsi time during 16th-20th December, 1984. Recent mark-recapture experiments on P. indicus have also established the fact that a longer migration of tagged white prawns took place from Cochin, (place of release) to Ovari - Manappad fishing villages on the southeast coast (Tinnaveli coast), covering a distance of 330-380 km in 68 to 103 days at a rate of 3.5 to 5.5 km/day. The southward migration of white prawns during the present study was in conjunction with the prevailing southerly current along the coast

    The fishermen belonging to Kovalam had a hectic activity in harvesting huge quantities of fish from the Kovalam bay from 26-8-'87 to 4-9-'87. Fishermen employed all available gears for catching the fish and prawns. According to them, this was due to the appearance of 'Vandal thanneer' or turbid water close to the shore.     During earthquakes, melt produced by frictional heating can accumulate on slip surfaces and dramatically weaken faults by melt lubrication. Once seismic slip slows and arrests, the melt cools and solidifies to form pseudotachylytes, the presence of which is commonly used by geologists to infer earthquake slip on exhumed ancient faults. Field evidence suggests that solidified melts may weld seismic faults, resulting in subsequent seismic ruptures propagating on neighboring pseudotachylyte-free faults or joints and thus leading to long-term fault slip delocalization for successive ruptures. We performed triaxial deformation experiments on natural pseudotachylyte-bearing rocks, and show that cooled frictional melt effectively welds fault surfaces together and gives faults cohesive strength comparable to that of an intact rock. Consistent with the field-based speculations, further shear is not favored on the same slip surface, but subsequent failure is accommodated on a new subparallel fault forming on an off-fault preexisting heterogeneity. A simple model of the temperature distribution in and around a pseudotachylyte following slip cessation indicates that frictional melts cool to below their solidus in tens of seconds, implying strength recovery over a similar time scale

    Practices towards prevention of food borne diseases among females in rural area of Trichy, India

    Background: Food borne diseases are of great importance since it leads to multiple health problems resulting in illness, malnutrition, mortality and economic loss. These diseases share a significant proportion in the occurrence of communicable diseases. Objectives was to study the knowledge about food borne diseases and food safety among women residing in rural area.Methods: This was a cross sectional study involving 150 adult females who were residing in rural field practice areas of a tertiary care teaching hospital. Practices of safe food handling were assessed using an interviewer administered questionnaire. Informed consent was obtained, and confidentiality was maintained. Appropriate descriptive statistical analysis was done.Results: Out of 150 females, 147 (98%) were aware of the importance of washing hands before cooking. Sixty four (42.7%) females had a habit of washing the vegetables with water twice before cooking. 102(68%) females consumed stored food after reheating, 48(32%)females consumed without heating. Though 70% were aware of food adulteration, none of the participants have lodged compliant against adulteration.Conclusions: Through our study we found that most of the females practiced proper hand washing before cooking and proper storage of the leftover food. The proportion of females who followed adequate cleaning of non-vegetarian food items and vegetables were found to be inadequate.

    Generalized non-coprime graphs of groups

    Let G be a finite group with identity e and H \neq \{e\} be a subgroup of G. The generalized non-coprime graph GAmma_{G,H} of G with respect to H is the simple undirected graph with G - \{e \}\) as the vertex set and two distinct vertices a and b are adjacent if and only if \gcd(|a|,|b|) \neq 1 and either a \in H or b \in H, where |a| is the order of a\in G. In this paper, we study certain graph theoretical properties of generalized non-coprime graphs of finite groups, concentrating on cyclic groups. More specifically, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the generalized non-coprime graph of a cyclic group to be in the class of stars, paths, cycles, triangle-free, complete bipartite, complete, unicycle, split, claw-free, chordal or perfect graphs. Then we show that widening the class of groups to all finite nilpotent groups gives us no new graphs, but we give as an example of contrasting behaviour the class of EPPO groups (those in which all elements have prime power order). We conclude with a connection to the Gruenberg--Kegel graph

    Efficacy of neostigmine and azithromycin in buffaloes with functional ileus

    Buffaloes presented to the Veterinary College and Research Institute Hospital with achezia were subjected to detailed anamnesis, clinical, haemato-biochemical examinations and ultrasonography. Ten buffaloes with functional ileus were selected by excluding the mechanical obstruction and peritonitis. These animals were administered with neostigmine, azithromycin along with intravenous fluids, streptopenicillin and flunixin meglumine for three days. Improvement in the clinical condition in terms of voiding of dung, resumption of rumination, feed and water intakes were noticed

    Lobster resources and culture potential

    In India, the average annual lobster landings during 1975-1981 were 1,6201 forming 0.8 % in the total crusta cean landings. The average foreign exchange earned by exporting the frozen lobster tails (av. 584 t) during that period is Rs. 54 million. The major species contributing to the exploited fishery are the shallow water spiny lobsters PanuUfus homarus (Linnaeus), P. polyphagus (Herbst) and P. ofnatus (Fabricius). Prasad and Tampi (1968) reported 18 palinurid and 20 scyllarid lobsters in the Indian Ocean, out of which 8 species of palinurids Panulirus homarus, P. ornatuS, P- polyphagus, P. versicolor, P. penicillatus, P. longipes, Puerulus sewelli and Palinustus mossambicus and 5 species of scyllarids Thenus ofientalis, Scyllafus batei, S. rugosus, S. fubens and S. sordidus are known to occur along the Indian coast. The lobsters reported from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands include 3 species belonging to the family Nephropsidae and 7 species of Eryonidae (Alcock, 1901) and 2 species of Palinuridae (Balss, 1925 ; Cheku- nova, 1971). During the present survey conducted in January-April 1978, data were collected on the occur rence and exploitation ol lobsters which are presented here.     Positional identification of variants of Adamts16 linked to inherited hypertension

    A previously reported blood pressure (BP) quantitative trait locus on rat Chromosome 1 was isolated in a short congenic segment spanning 804.6 kb. The 804.6 kb region contained only two genes, LOC306664 and LOC306665. LOC306664 is predicted to translate into A Disintegrin-like and Metalloproteinase with Thrombospondin Motifs-16 (Adamts16). LOC306665 is a novel gene. All predicted exons of both LOC306664 and LOC306665 were sequenced. Non-synonymous variants were identified in only one of these genes, LOC306664. These variants were naturally existing polymorphisms among inbred, outbred and wild rats. The full-length rat transcript of Adamts16 was detected in multiple tissues. Similar to ADAMTS16 in humans, expression of Adamts16 was prominent in the kidney. Renal transcriptome analysis suggested that a network of genes related to BP was differential between congenic and S rats. These genes were also differentially expressed between kidney cell lines with or without knock-down of Adamts16. Adamts16 is conserved between rats and humans. It is a candidate gene within the homologous region on human Chromosome 5, which is linked to systolic and diastolic BP in the Quebec Family Study. Multiple variants, including an Ala to Pro variant in codon 90 (rs2086310) of human ADAMTS16, were associated with human resting systolic BP (SBP). Replication study in GenNet confirmed the association of two variants of ADAMTS16 with SBP, including rs2086310.
