    Silicon Encapsulated Carbon Nanotubes

    A dual stage process of depositing bamboo-like carbon nanotubes (BCNTs) by hot filament chemical vapor deposition (HFCVD) and coating Si using Radio frequency sputtering (RFS) technique. The films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron field emission studies (EFE). SEM results suggest a dense network of homogeneous silicon-coated BCNTs. From the comprehensive analysis of the results provided by these techniques emerges the picture of Si encapsulated BCNTs

    Functionalization of Carbon Nanomaterial Surface by Doxorubicin and Antibodies to Tumor Markers

    The actual task of oncology is effective treatment of cancer while causing a minimum harm to the patient. The appearance of polymer nanomaterials and technologies launched new applications and approaches of delivery and release of anticancer drugs. The goal of work was to test ultra dispersed diamonds (UDDs) and onion-like carbon (OLCs) as new vehicles for delivery of antitumor drug (doxorubicin (DOX)) and specific antibodies to tumor receptors. Stable compounds of UDDs and OLCs with DOX were obtained. As results of work, an effectiveness of functionalization was 2.94 % w/w for OLC-DOX and 2.98 % w/w for UDD-DOX. Also, there was demonstrated that UDD-DOX and OLC-DOX constructs had dose-dependent cytotoxic effect on tumor cells in the presence of trypsin. The survival of adenocarcinoma cells reduced from 52 to 28 % in case of incubation with the UDD-DOX in concentrations from 8.4–2.5 to 670–20 μg/ml and from 72 to 30 % after incubation with OLC-DOX. Simultaneously, antibodies to epidermal growth factor maintained 75 % of the functional activity and specificity after matrix-assisted pulsed laser evaporation deposition. Thus, the conclusion has been made about the prospects of selected new methods and approaches for creating an antitumor agent with capabilities targeted delivery of drugs

    Products implementing the HomePlug 1.0 standard allowing high-speed communication on low-voltage powerlines have recently started arriving on the U.S. market for home and office networking without the requirement for installing new wires. Effective use of the powerline bandwidth requires robust physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) protocols to mitigate the harsh conditions of the powerline channel as well as the capability to support prioritized multimedia traffic. This paper describes powerline communications and the HomePlug 1.0 protocol, based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) and carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA), along with its changes to allow prioritized channel access. It then presents performance results for the HomePlug 1.0 protocol using a simulation model, ideal laboratory measurements with actual HomePlug 1.0 devices and field tests in a residential building.     WOS: 000530579700002PubMed: 32356439BACKGROUND: Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 1 (TREM-1) is secreted by phagocytes in adipose tissue and it also upregulates the expression of genes involved in the inflammatory response and atherosclerotic conditions. This study was aimed to investigate the serum TREM-1 levels in overweight patients. METHODS: Twenty-eight subjects in the overweight group (OG) and 20 age-matched healthy subjects in the control group (CG) (BMI 27.6 +/- 1.2 vs 23.1 +/- 2.17 kg/m(2), respectively, p< 0.001) were included in the study. The serum sTREM-1 level was measured by ELISA. The homeostasis model assessment score (HOMA-IR) was also calculated. RESULTS: The mean TREM-1 levels were significantly higher in OG than in CG (407.3 +/- 323.7 vs 150.3 +/- 152.7 pg/mL, respectively, p< 0.001). The HOMA-IR score was also significantly higher in OG than in CG (3.42 +/- 3.63 vs 2.77 +/- 1.61, respectively). A positive correlation was detected between TREM-1 and BMI (r= 0.318, p= 0.028). CONCLUSIONS: This study mainly demonstrated that a high serum TREM-1 level might be an early inflammatory marker in overweight patients.
