    On associating Fast Radio Bursts with afterglows

    A radio source that faded over six days, with a redshift of z0.5z\approx0.5 host, has been identified by Keane et al. (2016) as the transient afterglow to a fast radio burst (FRB 150418). We report follow-up radio and optical observations of the afterglow candidate and find a source that is consistent with an active galactic nucleus. If the afterglow candidate is nonetheless a prototypical FRB afterglow, existing slow-transient surveys limit the fraction of FRBs that produce afterglows to 0.25 for afterglows with fractional variation, m=2S1S2/(S1+S2)0.7m=2|S_1-S_2|/(S_1+S_2)\geq0.7, and 0.07 for m1m\geq1, at 95% confidence. In anticipation of a barrage of bursts expected from future FRB surveys, we provide a simple framework for statistical association of FRBs with afterglows. Our framework properly accounts for statistical uncertainties, and ensures consistency with limits set by slow-transient surveys.Comment: Accepted version (ApJL

    Gossip Codes for Fingerprinting: Construction, Erasure Analysis and Pirate Tracing

    This work presents two new construction techniques for q-ary Gossip codes from tdesigns and Traceability schemes. These Gossip codes achieve the shortest code length specified in terms of code parameters and can withstand erasures in digital fingerprinting applications. This work presents the construction of embedded Gossip codes for extending an existing Gossip code into a bigger code. It discusses the construction of concatenated codes and realisation of erasure model through concatenated codes.Comment: 28 page

    Blast vibration monitoring in opencast mines

    In this report the blast vibration monitoring techniques is studied. Ground vibration induced by blasting practices in mines has become a serious environmental issue in today’s scenario. Various factors influence the blast vibration being produced from the blasting practices such as the pattern of blasting, drilling pattern, quality and quantity of explosives being used, delay pattern etc. Also the vibration which is being generated by the blasting practices is comprised of two types of waves, body and surface waves. Some of the after blast features are also required to be studied in order to determine the safe blasting practices. Three types of adverse effects are generally associated with the blasting practices, Air blast, Fly rock and Ground vibration, However the amplitude, frequency and duration of the ground vibration is determined by the non-controllable(local geology, rock characteristic and distances of the structure from blast site) and controllable parameters(Charge weight, Delay interval, Type of explosive ,Direction of blast progression, Coupling, confinement, Spatial distribution of charges, Burden, spacing and specification and specific charge). For the purpose of determination of the safe Charge per Delay a number of researchers have given various theories and equations. The feasibility of the CMRI equation is studied in this report. Also there are various equipment’s available globally for measuring the ground vibration and air blast. In the present study Minimate Blaster specification has been studied in detail. All the blasting operations were obtained at different- different distances. According graphs were plotted for the data’s available from the blasting practices and the safe Charge per Delay and Peak Particle Velocity is determined for the mine in accordance with the DGMS regulations

    Effect of cadmium stress on seed germination and seedling morpho-physiological growth parameters of barnyard millet (Echinochloa frumentacea Link)

    Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal, which is seen in the contaminated soils and severely affects the growth and development of plants in recent years. The study on the seed germination and morpho-physiological growth characteristics of barnyard millet (Echinochloa frumentacea) cultivar CO (KV) 2 treated with different concentrations (50, 100, 150, 200, and 250 mg/kg of soil) of Cd were evaluated at 15th, 30th, and 45th day of interval. The findings of this research demonstrate that the maximum dosage of Cd (250 mg/kg of soil) affects the germination percentage (65%) of barnyard millet. Seedling vigor index has been negatively influences a drop in germination percentage. Increasing concentrations of Cd reveals the growth of root and shoot length and the quantity of fresh and dry weight affected. The phytotoxicity percentage of roots and shoots also increases with increasing concentrations of Cd, whereas the tolerance index level decreases with increasing concentrations of Cd. In root and shoot, the relative growth index was reduced in higher concentration of Cd. The relative water content remains high in the initial stages of leaf development and declines when the leaf matures. From this study, it was found that the increase in the concentration of Cd leads to decrease the germination percentage and morpho-physiological growth parameters as compared to control
