    Office quality classification theoretical and empirical issues

    Office quality classification literature recognises identification of office classes through division of office market rent distribution into intervals but failed to provide sound theoretical framework and comprehensive empirical approach to this method. This paper theorised that as office rental levels are a function of office quality; high quality office classes should have their mean rents greater than average market rent and mean rents of low quality classes. Also that heterogeneous nature of property coupled with lack of perfect information to market participants could result into differential evaluation of rent and quality of the same property by different market participants. The behaviour of participants normally reflects in distribution of market rent by depicting natural breaks in the distribution that could be captured by univariate data exploration. Frequency and histograms of rent distributions that were assumed to depict the behaviour of market participants were used to divide rent distribution to intervals to identify office quality classes. The results of this classification were validated by discriminant analysis. 67% and 59% accuracies were achieved for estimation and holdout subsamples respectively. This paper extended theoretical and empirical approaches in office quality classification. The proposed empirical approach could be used in future classification research

    Effects of alarms on control of robot teams

    Annunciator driven supervisory control (ADSC) is a widely used technique for directing human attention to control systems otherwise beyond their capabilities. ADSC requires associating abnormal parameter values with alarms in such a way that operator attention can be directed toward the involved subsystems or conditions. This is hard to achieve in multirobot control because it is difficult to distinguish abnormal conditions for states of a robot team. For largely independent tasks such as foraging, however, self-reflection can serve as a basis for alerting the operator to abnormalities of individual robots. While the search for targets remains unalarmed the resulting system approximates ADSC. The described experiment compares a control condition in which operators perform a multirobot urban search and rescue (USAR) task without alarms with ADSC (freely annunciated) and with a decision aid that limits operator workload by showing only the top alarm. No differences were found in area searched or victims found, however, operators in the freely annunciated condition were faster in detecting both the annunciated failures and victims entering their cameras' fields of view.     We implement the efficient line of sight method to calculate the anisotropy and polarization of the cosmic microwave background for scalar and tensor modes in almost-Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models with positive spatial curvature.     Voice control of the space shuttle video system

    A pilot voice control system developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to test and evaluate the feasibility of controlling the shuttle TV cameras and monitors by voice commands utilizes a commercially available discrete word speech recognizer which can be trained to the individual utterances of each operator. Successful ground tests were conducted using a simulated full-scale space shuttle manipulator. The test configuration involved the berthing, maneuvering and deploying a simulated science payload in the shuttle bay. The handling task typically required 15 to 20 minutes and 60 to 80 commands to 4 TV cameras and 2 TV monitors. The best test runs show 96 to 100 percent voice recognition accuracy

    Robust and real-time control of magnetic bearings for space engines

    Currently, NASA Lewis Research Center is developing magnetic bearings for Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) turbopumps. The control algorithms which have been used are based on either the proportional-intergral-derivative control (PID) approach or the linear quadratic (LQ) state space approach. These approaches lead to an acceptable performance only when the system model is accurately known, which is seldom true in practice. For example, the rotor eccentricity, which is a major source of vibration at high speeds, cannot be predicted accurately. Furthermore, the dynamics of a rotor shaft, which must be treated as a flexible system to model the elastic rotor shaft, is infinite dimensional in theory and the controller can only be developed on the basis of a finite number of modes. Therefore, the development of the control system is further complicated by the possibility of closed loop system instability because of residual or uncontrolled modes, the so called spillover problem. Consequently, novel control algorithms for magnetic bearings are being developed to be robust to inevitable parametric uncertainties, external disturbances, spillover phenomenon and noise. Also, as pointed out earlier, magnetic bearings must exhibit good performance at a speed over 30,000 rpm. This implies that the sampling period available for the design of a digital control system has to be of the order of 0.5 milli-seconds. Therefore, feedback coefficients and other required controller parameters have to be computed off-line so that the on-line computational burden is extremely small. The development of the robust and real-time control algorithms is based on the sliding mode control theory. In this method, a dynamic system is made to move along a manifold of sliding hyperplanes to the origin of the state space. The number of sliding hyperplanes equals that of actuators. The sliding mode controller has two parts; linear state feedback and nonlinear terms. The nonlinear terms guarantee that the systems would reach the intersection of all sliding hyperplanes and remain on it when bounds on the errors in the system parameters and external disturbances are known. The linear part of the control drives the system to the origin of state space. Another important feature is that the controller parameter can be computed off-line. Consequently, on-line computational burden is small

    Optical and X-ray Properties of the Swift BAT-detected AGN

    The Swift Gamma-Ray Burst satellite has detected a largely unbiased towards absorption sample of local (0.03 \approx 0.03) AGN, based solely on their 14--195 keV flux. In the first 9 months of the survey, 153 AGN sources were detected. The X-ray properties in the 0.3--10 keV band have been compiled and presented based on analyses with XMM-Newton, Chandra, Suzaku, and the Swift XRT (Winter et al. 2009). Additionally, we have compiled a sub-sample of sources with medium resolution optical ground-based spectra from the SDSS or our own observations at KPNO. In this sample of 60 sources, we have classified the sources using standard emission line diagnostic plots, obtained masses for the broad line sources through measurement of the broad Hβ\beta emission line, and measured the [OIII] 5007\AA luminosity of this sample. Based on continuum fits to the intrinsic absorption features, we have obtained clues about the stellar populations of the host galaxies. We now present the highlights of our X-ray and optical studies of this unique sample of local AGNs, including a comparison of the 2--10 keV and 14--195 keV X-ray luminosities with the [OIII] 5007\AA luminosity and the implications of our results towards measurements of bolometric luminosities.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, to appear in proceedings for 'X-ray Astronomy 2009', Bologna 09/2009, AIP Conference Series, Eds.
