    Good and bad institutions:is the debate over? Cross-country firm-level evidence from the textile industry

    Using firm-level data from nine developing countries, we demonstrate that certain institutions, like restrictive labour market regulations, that are considered bad for economic growth might be beneficial for production efficiency, whereas good business environment, which is considered beneficial for economic growth, might have an adverse impact on production efficiency. We argue that our results suggest that there might be significant difference in the macro- and micro-impacts of institutional quality, such that the classification of institutions into 'good' and 'bad might be premature

    Linear Spatial Stability Analysis of Mixed Convection Boundary Layer over a Heated Plate

    The spatial stability properties of a mixed convection boundary layer developed over a heated horizontal flat plate is investigated under the linear and quasi-parallel assumptions by solving the Orr-Sommerfeld equations. The main aim of this work is to find a critical buoyancy parameter above which a qualitative change in the stability characteristics of the mixed convection boundary layer due to the influence of heat transfer is displayed. The equilibrium flow used here is that given by the similarity solution of [1] which implies the wall temperature to vary as the inverse square root of the distance from the leading edge of the plate. The Orr-Sommerfeld equation has been solved by using the compound matrix method (CMM)-- which locates all the modes in a chosen range of complex wave number, for spatial stability analysis. Cases with different buoyancy parameters have been investigated which were earlier reported incorrectly in [2]. Results indicate modifications of the hydrodynamic mode with certain buoyancy parameter for which continuous existence of instability as the flow develops downstream. The erroneous results in the above mentioned paper is associated with the wrong choice of compound variables used in CMM and the associated dispersion relation satisfied at the wall.     Recovery of Coal fines from Rejects by Column Flotation

    Investigations were carried out using column flotation to recover coking coal fines from the tailings generated at flotation plant of one of theoperating washeries. Columns of different diameter designed and developed by RRL, Bhubaneswar were used in these studies. Washabilitiy studies indicated that the tailings have the potential to yield 60% of clean coal at 15.0% ash level. Flotation studies in cell indicated thata product with 16% ash can be obtained at 50% yield from these tailings. Results of column flotation had indicated that the performance of column is superior to cell and close to washability data. Most of the coal values being rejected presently can be recovered by using theflotation column. The results obtained by 100 mm and 220 mm diameter laboratory columns could be reproduced on pilot column of 1000 mm diameter, confirming the validity of design and scale up criteria

    School environment assessment tools to address behavioural risk factors of non-communicable diseases: A scoping review

    We aimed to identify, describe and analyse school environment assessment (SEA) tools that address behavioural risk factors (unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco and alcohol consumption) for non-communicable diseases (NCD). We searched in MEDLINE and Web of Science, hand-searched reference lists and contacted experts. Basic characteristics, measures assessed and measurement properties (validity, reliability, usability) of identified tools were extracted. We narratively synthesized the data and used content analysis to develop a list of measures used in the SEA tools. Twenty-four SEA tools were identified, mostly from developed countries. Out of these, 15 were questionnaire based, 8 were checklists or observation based tools and one tool used a combined checklist/observation based and telephonic questionnaire approach. Only 1 SEA tool had components related to all the four NCD risk factors, 2 SEA tools has assessed three NCD risk factors (diet/nutrition, physical activity, tobacco), 10 SEA tools has assessed two NCD risk factors (diet/nutrition and physical activity) and 11 SEA tools has assessed only one of the NCD risk factor. Several measures were used in the tools to assess the four NCD risk factors, but tobacco and alcohol was sparingly included. Measurement properties were reported for 14 tools. The review provides a comprehensive list of measures used in SEA tools which could be a valuable resource to guide future development of such tools. A valid and reliable SEA tool which could simultaneously evaluate all NCD risk factors, that has been tested in different settings with varying resource availability is needed

    Diagnosis and management of preeclampsia in community settings in low and middle-income countries

    Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy contribute significantly to maternal mortality and morbidity. Preeclampsia belongs to the spectrum of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and if undiagnosed and/or untreated leads to fatal consequences for both the mother and the baby. Early detection and prevention of preeclampsia is limited by uncertainty in the knowledge about its etiopathogenesis. While much work has been done in establishing clinical guidelines for management of preeclampsia in the hospital or tertiary care settings, there is considerable lack of work in the domain of evidence-based guidelines for screening, identification and management of preeclampsia at the community-level. The article reviews these issues with special considerations and to challenges faced in low and middle-income countries. There is a need to focus on low-cost screening and interventions in the community to achieve a significant impact on preventable maternal and fetal mortality in order to control the burden of preeclampsia significantly as well as investing on more research at primary care level to improve the evidence base for community-level interventions

    We define coherent states carrying SU(N) charges by exploiting generalized Schwinger boson representation of SU(N) Lie algebra. These coherent states are defined on 2(2N11)2 (2^{N - 1} - 1) complex planes. They satisfy continuity property and provide resolution of identity.
