Goal Commitment And Competition As Drivers For Group Productivity In Business Process Modeling
Many studies have looked at the factors that control the productivity of collaborative work. We claim that goal commitment and competition have a strong impact on group productivity in collaborative modelling. To substantiate this claim we first take a look at existing factor models to identify the factors that potentially mediate the effect on group productivity. We then investigate the relation between the factors with the help of controlled field experiments in five different organisations. We confirm the theoretical results with the help of structured equation modelling
Locally delivered antistaphylococcal lysin exebacase or CF-296 is active in methicillin-resistant <i>Staphylococcus aureus</i> implant-associated osteomyelitis
Introduction: Staphylococcus aureus is the most common cause of orthopedic infections and can be
challenging to treat, especially in the presence of a foreign body. The
antistaphylococcal lysins exebacase and CF-296 have rapid bactericidal
activity, a low propensity for resistance development, and synergize with
some antibiotics.
Methods: Rabbit implant-associated osteomyelitis was induced by drilling
into the medial tibia followed by locally delivering exebacase, CF-296, or
lysin carrier. A titanium screw colonized with methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) IDRL-6169 was inserted.
Intravenous daptomycin or saline was administered and continued daily for
4âd. On day 5, rabbits were euthanized, and the tibiae and implants were
collected for culture. Results were reported as log10 colony forming units (cfu) per gram of bone or log10âcfu per implant, and comparisons among the six groups were performed using the
Wilcoxon rank sum test.
Results: Based on implant and bone cultures, all treatments resulted in
significantly lower bacterial counts than those of controls (Pâ€0.0025).
Exebacase alone or with daptomycin as well as CF-296 with daptomycin were more
active than daptomycin alone (Pâ€0.0098) or CF-296 alone (Pâ€0.0154)
based on implant cultures. CF-296 with daptomycin was more active than
either CF-296 alone (P=0.0040) or daptomycin alone (P=0.0098) based on
bone cultures.
Conclusion: Local delivery of either exebacase or CF-296 offers a promising
complement to conventional antibiotics in implant-associated infections.</p
Novel Bone-Targeting Agent for Enhanced Delivery of Vancomycin to Bone
We examined the pharmacokinetic properties of vancomycin conjugated to a bone-targeting agent (BT) with high affinity for hydroxyapatite after systemic intravenous administration. The results confirm enhanced persistence of BT-vancomycin in plasma and enhanced accumulation in bone relative to vancomycin. This suggests that BT-vancomycin may be a potential carrier for the systemic targeted delivery of vancomycin in the treatment of bone infections, potentially reducing the reliance on surgical debridement to achieve the desired therapeutic outcome
Synchrony and Physiological Arousal Increase Cohesion and Cooperation in Large Naturalistic Groups
Separate research streams have identified synchrony and arousal as two factors that might contribute to the effects of human rituals on social cohesion and cooperation. But no research has manipulated these variables in the field to investigate their causal â and potentially interactive â effects on prosocial behaviour. Across four experimental sessions involving large samples of strangers, we manipulated the synchronous and physiologically arousing affordances of a group marching task within a sports stadium. We observed participantsâ subsequent movement, grouping, and cooperation via a camera hidden in the stadiumâs roof. Synchrony and arousal both showed main effects, predicting larger groups, tighter clustering, and more cooperative behaviour in a free-rider dilemma. However, synchrony and arousal interacted on measures of clustering and cooperation: such that synchrony only encouraged closer clustering â and encouraged greater cooperationâwhen paired with physiological arousal. The research has implications for understanding the nature and co-occurrence of synchrony and physiological arousal in rituals around the world. It also represents the first use of real-time spatial tracking as a precise and naturalistic method of simulating collective rituals
On the Perception of Newcomers: Toward an Evolved Psychology of Intergenerational Coalitions
Human coalitions frequently persist through multiple, overlapping membership generations, requiring new members to cooperate and coordinate with veteran members. Does the mind contain psychological adaptations for interacting within these intergenerational coalitions? In this paper, we examine whether the mind spontaneously treats newcomers as a motivationally privileged category. Newcomersâthough capable of benefiting coalitionsâmay also impose considerable costs (e.g., they may free ride on other members, they may be poor at completing group tasks). In three experiments we show (1) that the mind categorizes coalition members by tenure, including newcomers; (2) that tenure categorization persists in the presence of orthogonal and salient social dimensions; and (3) that newcomers elicit a pattern of impressions consistent with their probable ancestral costs. These results provide preliminary evidence for a specialized component of human coalitional psychology: an evolved concept of newcomer

Gut microbiota functions: metabolism of nutrients and other food components
The diverse microbial community that inhabits the human gut has an extensive metabolic repertoire that is distinct from, but complements the activity of mammalian enzymes in the liver and gut mucosa and includes functions essential for host digestion. As such, the gut microbiota is a key factor in shaping the biochemical profile of the diet and, therefore, its impact on host health and disease. The important role that the gut microbiota appears to play in human metabolism and health has stimulated research into the identification of specific microorganisms involved in different processes, and the elucidation of metabolic pathways, particularly those associated with metabolism of dietary components and some host-generated substances. In the first part of the review, we discuss the main gut microorganisms, particularly bacteria, and microbial pathways associated with the metabolism of dietary carbohydrates (to short chain fatty acids and gases), proteins, plant polyphenols, bile acids, and vitamins. The second part of the review focuses on the methodologies, existing and novel, that can be employed to explore gut microbial pathways of metabolism. These include mathematical models, omics techniques, isolated microbes, and enzyme assays
