Electron tomography of late stages of FcRn-mediated antibody transcytosis in neonatal rat small intestine
The neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) transports maternal immunoglobulin (IgG) across epithelia to confer passive immunity to mammalian young. In newborn rodents, FcRn transcytoses IgG from ingested milk across the intestinal epithelium for release into the bloodstream. We used electron tomography to examine FcRn transport of Nanogold-labeled Fc (Au-Fc) in neonatal rat jejunum, focusing on later aspects of transport by chasing Au-Fc before fixation. We observed pools of Au-Fc in dilated regions of the lateral intercellular space (LIS), likely representing exit sites where Au-Fc accumulates en route to the blood. Before weaning, the jejunum functions primarily in IgG transport and exhibits unusual properties: clathrin-rich regions near/at the basolateral LIS and multivesicular bodies (MVBs) expressing early endosomal markers. To address whether these features are related to IgG transport, we examined LIS and endocytic/transcytotic structures from neonatal and weaned animals. Weaned samples showed less LIS-associated clathrin. MVBs labeled with late endosomal/lysosomal markers were smaller than their neonatal counterparts but contained 10 times more internal compartments. These results are consistent with hypotheses that clathrin-rich basolateral regions in neonatal jejunum are involved in IgG exocytosis and that MVBs function in IgG transport while FcRn is expressed but switch to degradative functions after weaning, when the jejunum does not express FcRn or transport IgG

Hydroxyl concentration estimates in the sunlit snowpack at Summit, Greenland
Experiments were performed at Summit, Greenland (72°34′ N, 38°29′ W) to investigate hydroxyl mixing ratios in the sunlit surface snowpack (or firn). We added a carefully selected mixture of hydrocarbon gases (with a wide range of hydroxyl reactivities) to a UV and visible light transparent flow chamber containing undisturbed natural firn. The relative decrease in mixing ratios of these gases allowed estimation of the lower limit mixing ratio of hydroxyl radicals in the near-surface firn pore spaces. Hydroxyl mixing ratios in the firn air followed a diurnal cycle in summer 2003 (10-12 July), with peak values of more than 3.2×106 molecules cm-3 between 13:00 and 16:00 local time. The minimum value estimated was 1.1×106 molecules cm-3 at 20:00 local time. Results during spring of 2004 showed lower, but rapidly increasing, peak hydroxyl mixing ratios of 1.1×106 molecules cm-3 in the early afternoon on 15 April and 1.5×106 molecules cm-3 on 1 May. Our firn hydroxyl estimates were similar to directly measured above-snow ambient levels during the spring field season, but were only about 30% of ambient levels during summer. © 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Gravitational Lensing Statistics as a Probe of Dark Energy
By using the comoving distance, we derive an analytic expression for the
optical depth of gravitational lensing, which depends on the redshift to the
source and the cosmological model characterized by the cosmic mass density
parameter , the dark energy density parameter and its
equation of state . It is shown that, the larger the
dark energy density is and the more negative its pressure is, the higher the
gravitational lensing probability is. This fact can provide an independent
constraint for dark energy.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figure
Effectiveness of recovery actions on deviant customer behavior — the moderating role of gender.
This paper aims to examine how gender interacts with various recovery actions on perceived employee effort, complaint handling satisfaction, and behavioral intention in the case of deviant customer behavior in an East-Asian context. Study 1, a qualitative study, reveals that consumers expect companies to take appropriate remedial actions when a service consumption experience is affected by deviant customer behaviors (e.g., smoking in non designated area). Study 2 employed a 2 (gender) × 6(recovery actions) between subject design in a restaurant setting. Results show that confronting the deviant customer received the highest customer ratings in terms of perceived employee effort, complaint handling satisfaction, and behavioral intention. However, gender moderated the relative effectiveness of recovery actions. Relocating the focal customer was equally good as compensation for women while men were less appreciative of relocation than compensation. In sum, service providers are advised to initiate some form of recovery action in response to deviant customer behaviors
Gravitational lensing statistical properties in general FRW cosmologies with dark energy component(s): analytic results
Various astronomical observations have been consistently making a strong case
for the existence of a component of dark energy with negative pressure in the
universe. It is now necessary to take the dark energy component(s) into account
in gravitational lensing statistics and other cosmological tests. By using the
comoving distance we derive analytic but simple expressions for the optical
depth of multiple image, the expected value of image separation and the
probability distribution of image separation caused by an assemble of singular
isothermal spheres in general FRW cosmological models with dark energy
component(s). We also present the kinematical and dynamical properties of these
kinds of cosmological models and calculate the age of the universe and the
distance measures, which are often used in classical cosmological tests. In
some cases we are able to give formulae that are simpler than those found
elsewhere in the literature, which could make the cosmological tests for dark
energy component(s) more convenient.Comment: 14 pages, no figure, Latex fil
