Equivalence between various versions of the self-dual action of the Ashtekar formalism
Different aspects of the self-dual (anti-self-dual) action of the Ashtekar
canonical formalism are discussed. In particular, we study the equivalences and
differences between the various versions of such an action. Our analysis may be
useful for the development of an Ashtekar formalism in eight dimensions.Comment: 10 pages, Latex, minor correction
Towards an Ashtekar formalism in eight dimensions
We investigate the possibility of extending the Ashtekar theory to eight
dimensions. Our approach relies on two notions: the octonionic structure and
the MacDowell-Mansouri formalism generalized to a spacetime of signature 1+7.
The key mathematical tool for our construction is the self-dual (antiself-dual)
four-rank fully antisymmetric octonionic tensor. Our results may be of
particular interest in connection with a possible formulation of M-theory via
matroid theory.Comment: 15 pages, Latex, minor changes, to appear in Class. Quantum Gra
Hamiltonian Noether theorem for gauge systems and two time physics
The Noether theorem for Hamiltonian constrained systems is revisited. In
particular, our review presents a novel method to show that the gauge
transformations are generated by the conserved quantities associated with the
first class constraints. We apply our results to the relativistic point
particle, to the Friedberg et al. model and, with special emphasis, to two time
physics.Comment: 20 pages, Latex, references added, the "massless" sense of (87) is

Self-dual gravity and self-dual Yang-Mills in the context of Macdowell-Mansouri formalism
In this work we propose an action which unifies self-dual gravity and
self-dual Yang-Mills in the context of the Macdowell-Mansouri formalism. We
claim that such an action may be used to find the S-dual action for both
self-dual gravity and self-dual Yang-Mills.Comment: 8 pages, Revtex, no figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Wedge splitting test method: quantification of influence of glued marble plates by two-parameter fracture mechanics
In the present paper, the well-known wedge splitting test (WST) is applied on specimens with different geometries (S= 150, 200, 300 mm) and variants of the specimens’ configurations. K-calibration (B1) and T-stress (B2) calibration curves for such specimens are introduced. The objective was to compare and discuss the values of the calibration curves dependent on the specimen’s geometries and on three different specimens' configurations: homogenous specimen; specimen with marble plates forming the groove for load application and specimen with glued marble plates
Strong magnetic response of submicron Silicon particles in the infrared
High-permittivity dielectric particles with resonant magnetic properties are
being explored as constitutive elements of new metamaterials and devices in the
microwave regime. Magnetic properties of low-loss dielectric nanoparticles in
the visible or infrared are not expected due to intrinsic low refractive index
of optical materials in these regimes. Here we analyze the dipolar electric and
magnetic response of loss-less dielectric spheres made of moderate permittivity
materials. For low material refractive index there are no sharp resonances due
to strong overlapping between different multipole contributions. However, we
find that Silicon particles with refractive index 3.5 and radius approx. 200nm
present a dipolar and strong magnetic resonant response in telecom and
near-infrared frequencies, (i.e. at wavelengths approx. 1.2-2 micrometer).
Moreover, the light scattered by these Si particles can be perfectly described
by dipolar electric and magnetic fields, quadrupolar and higher order
contributions being negligible.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
Gravitational Duality in MacDowell-Mansouri Gauge Theory
Strong-weak duality invariance can only be defined for particular sectors of
supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories. Nevertheless, for full non-Abelian
non-supersymmetric theories, dual theories with inverted couplings, have been
found. We show that an analogous procedure allows to find the dual action to
the gauge theory of gravity constructed by the MacDowell-Mansouri model plus
the superposition of a term.Comment: 9 pages, LaTeX, no figure
Active disturbance rejection control: a guide for design and application
[EN] This tutorial addresses the design of controllers by active disturbance rejection control (ADRC). First, the main blocks in the ADRC loop are described. Next, the formulation of the control problem under the disturbance rejection framework is discussed, as well as the tuning of the gains set which are part of the main loop and a guide on designing of the active disturbance rejection controller is presented. This tutorial aims to offer an introduction to readers about the ADRC and a review of the most significant publications that have contributed to development and advance in the research related to the area. To illustrate the design procedure, two examples are included: thermal control and the multivariable control of a chemical process.[ES] Este tutorial aborda el diseño de controladores lineales por rechazo activo de perturbaciones (ADRC). Martínez, B.; Sanchis, J.; García-Nieto, S.; Martínez, M. Investigation of photoprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant capacities and lc–esi–ms phenolic profile of astragalus gombiformis pomel
Plant-derived compounds have recently been gaining popularity as skincare factors due to their ability to absorb ultraviolet radiations and their anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In this light, this work aimed to evaluate in vitro the pharmacological activities of the butanolic extract prepared from the aerial parts of Astragalus gombiformis Pomel, an endemic species to southern Algeria. The sun protection factor was used to assess the photoprotective effect (SPF), the protein denaturation method to determine the anti-inflammatory activity, and brine shrimp nauplii and OxHLIA assay, respectively, to assess the cytotoxicity and antioxidant capacity of A. gombiformis. In addition, LC–ESI–MS analysis was employed for the characterization of the phenolic constituents of A. gombiformis. The results showed that A. gombiformis had high capacity for absorbing UV radiations with an SPF of 37.78 ± 0.85 and significant anti-inflammatory activity with a percentage inhibition of 75.38% which is close to that of diclofenac and ketoprofen. In addition, A. gombiformis was found to have effective cytotoxicity against Artemia nauplii with a DC50 value of about 44.7 µg/mL, but a weak hemolytic effect against human erythrocytes. LC–ESI–MS results detected the presence of 17 phenolic compounds with a predominance of cirsiliol, silymarin, quercitrin (quercetin-3-O-rhamnoside), and kaempferol. Taken together, these results suggest that A. gombiformis extract could be used as a skincare agent in cosmetic formulations, providing excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory protection, allowing the treatment of skin conditions, as well as a pharmaceutical agent with multidimensional applications. The authors are grateful to the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the National Centre for Biotechnology Research (C.R.B.T) for their respective financial and material supports
Resonant radiation pressure on neutral particles in a waveguide
A theoretical analysis of electromagnetic forces on neutral particles in an
hollow waveguide is presented. We show that the effective scattering cross
section of a very small (Rayleigh) particle can be strongly modified inside a
waveguide. The coupling of the scattered dipolar field with the waveguide modes
induce a resonant enhanced backscattering state of the scatterer-guide system
close to the onset of new modes. The particle effective cross section can then
be as large as the wavelength even far from any transition resonance. As we
will show, a small particle can be strongly accelerated along the guide axis
while being highly confined in a narrow zone of the cross section of the guide.Comment: RevTeX,4 pages,3 PS figure
